Summer is an opportunity to relax, travel, and catch up on the reading you meant to do a while ago. It means sunshine and ice cream, swimming and fun. With this free time also comes an opportunity: If you’re spending the majority of your summer in Beijing check out a volunteer program run by the Dandelion School.

Dandelion School is a non-profit middle school established for migrant children in Beijing. Read up on them here, a previous post on beijingkids and here, the school’s website. Every year, the school holds an English Summer Camp with the help of many volunteers, all from native English-speaking countries. The year it runs from July 1 to July 10. Room and board accommodations are provided for free.

I ran across the school’s summer program while searching for something to do this summer, and remembered some friends who volunteered in previous years. This is the camp’s seventh running year. You can read a former volunteer’s diary here.

The school is recruiting volunteers until June 28, and a volunteer meeting will be held on the June 29 and 30. To apply, send in an application (found here) and a photograph to pgyxx@yahoo.com.cn.

If you’re interested in something long-term, the school also welcomes volunteers during their regular school year. Call 6128 8964 or 6128 6686 for more information.

Annie Wang is 17 years old. A former International School of Beijing student, she currently boards at Choate Rosemary Hall in the US, while her parents still base themselves in Beijing. Annie loves good food, finding new places to explore, and her favorite subject in school is English.
