Vegans and vegetarians, rejoice! The Veggie Table is the newest addition to Beijing’s vegan food scene. Nestled in Wudaoying Hutong, this casual eatery serves hearty fare devoid of animal products and sources local organic produce whenever possible. The hummus (RMB 25 for a small portion) was served in a dramatic chickpea and olive oil swirl with a chili pepper garnish. For main dishes, try the tangy, sauerkraut-heavy “vegan stink out” open-faced sandwich (RMB 58) or the popular shiitake mushroom burger (RMB 62). The Veggie Table also serves soups, salads, dips, and hot dishes like Indian Dhal Bat (RMB 65) with lentils and brown rice. Expect to pay about RMB 80-100 per person. The restaurant is completely smoke-free and they will refill reusable water containers on request. Service can be slow on weekends and during peak meal times, so stop by on a weekday if you can.
