“The more things change – the more they stay the same”
In the last 40 years, humanity can look back on so many fundamental changes, many of which have been driven by new technologies and their application across various industries. One only has to take a look at the evolution of banking, healthcare, transport and communication to see the changes that have transformed our lives.
So why, during an age of rapid change and growth in so many industries, has education been left behind?
Essentially, if one visits a school today, the core practice still remains the same. You will still see classrooms with tables and chairs, rows of children, books and other learning tools. One key difference we might see, at least in many of the international schools these days, is the inclusion of interactive Smartboards and I-Pads. On the surface, we are comforted by the overwhelming feeling that the school must be incredibly technologically advanced and keeping step with the demands of the digital future. There is no argument that these technological devices have some major benefits for students. However, what really needs to be investigated is whether these tools are actually in line with the aim of preparing our children for the digital society that exists today and will become increasingly prevalent in the future, or if they are simply a direct replacement for older educational tools with a few added functions.
So, the big question is: What should parents and society demand of our children’s schools?
Educational Seminar – The Education Revolution
What should parents and society demand of our children’s schools?
On November 25th from 9.30am – 11.30am, join Yew Chung International School of Beijing (YCIS Beijing) Co-Principal Noel Thomas for an educational seminar at the AmCham Conference Center. With over 30 years’ experience in the field of education, Thomas will examine the reasons why education has failed to keep up with other industries despite its importance to all students’ futures. His analysis will also focus on the current educational climate, the need to re-imagine the way schools teach students, and what should be done to make sure these changes are achieved for the good of our children’s futures.
