The Gift of a Smile

I’ve always loved the phrase “Everyone smiles in the same language.” Next week at the International School of Beijing (ISB) -- through efforts of the Middle School Student Council (STUCO) – students, faculty and staff will learn what it means to truly give the gift of a smile during their annual Smile Week.

For the fifth year in a row, STUCO organizes awareness events and fundraisers to help provide cleft lip and cleft palate orphans from Ping An Medical Foster Home the corrective operations they need. A plastic surgeon from a Chinese hospital essentially donates his time, but the operations themselves cost about RMB 12,000 each (up from RMB 9,000). Over time, this student organization has paid for 20 successful operations!

The Lowdown: Beijing No. 55 Middle School and High School

“What's the deal with Beijing No. 55?” This is a question that several parents have asked before in our forum, without a definitive answer...until now! Tucked away in a hutong between Dongzhimen Waidajie and Gongti Beilu, this bilingual Chinese/English middle school and high school has caught the attention of many expat families. Yesterday morning, I joined beijingkids Brand Manager and Beijing No. 55 mom Theresa Ahdieh on a tour of the campus. Here’s what we learned.

Help Budding Students at Dandelion School

A year ago, we wrote about the Dandelion School in Daxing District. As the only officially recognized high school for children of migrant workers, Dandelion principal Hong Zheng and her dedicated staff have their work cut out for them. The school takes its mission of self-reliance seriously and doesn’t get by solely on donations, but every yuan helps considering Dandelion’s yearly running costs of RMB 3.5 million. Here are some ways you can help.
