The Beijinger Pizza Cup: Who's In The Elite Eight?

In an exciting second round of the Beijinger Pizza Cup, local favorite Annie’s was ousted by a rising Gung Ho, Kro’s stomped all over Paddy O’Shea’s and upstarts Eatalia overthrew Pyro Pizza to claim Haidian supremacy. Kro’s Nest scored the most resounding victory of the second round, slaughtering Paddy O’Shea's by winning 79% of the vote. The second most dominating performance was by Opposite House basement-dwellers Sureño, which doubled up the votes over Sanlitun neighbor Ciro’s.

Sanlitun Kro's Nest Now Open!

With his "comeback" branch comfortably bedded in up on Xiaoyun Lu, it was only a matter of time before pizza godfather Olaf "Kro" Bauer staked a claim for a share of the Sanlitun turf lost following his well-documented split with former business partner Yuan Jie. (If you don't know that story, catch up with a selection of reports here.) Well, for fans of huge, topping-loaded pizzas, the time has come - a new branch of Kro's Nest opened on Monday (August 29) in the Sanlitun Nanlu yard that houses The Bookworm, d lounge, Nanjie and Salsa Caribe.

Kids' Creations at the Kro

It was a full house last Saturday as the Workers Stadium branch of The Kro's Nest played host to the beijing-kids Create Your Own Pizza party. Families with kids ranging in age from infants to teenagers each took a hack at making the perfect combo … a tasty time was had by all.

First Prize for not only tastiness but visual appeal went to the Dimsa family, with their "Our House" combo.

Looks almost too good to eat! For their pie-making efforts the Dimsas were rewarded with a voucher for 5 free pizzas at the Kro's Nest -- to enjoy perhaps at times when the Kro is not quite so crowded!

Make Mine Pepperoni

As the weather changes and we slide into icier months, we turn to comfort food to refuel and warm up – and nothing beats pizza for comfort food! Kids notoriously love the stuff, and when the kids are happy… well… enough said.

But from where does this cheesy treat originate? Early origins point to the Babylonians, Armenians and Greeks, with the modern take of pizza laden with tomato andcheese claimed by Italy, then adopted wholeheartedly by the US. Even the Persians of 6th century BC got in on the pizza act: Soldiers of Darius the Great were said to have baked flat bread on their shields, covering the piping hot rounds with cheese and dates.
