Brussels Sprouts and Other Nutritional Tips

Olivia Lee, a nutritionist and beijingkids columnist, has recently updated her website and posted a few new articles on nutrition. We have picked a couple of her articles which we think would be of interest to a lot of parents.
1. Brussels Sprouts: These sprouts have a bad rep. According to Olivia, overcooking them brings out a special bitterness and sulfurous compound. In addition, it actually destroys most of the anti-cancer compounds called sulforaphane in the sprout. So Olivia proposes quick cooking with even layers of the sprout with a recipe for a Warm Orange-Ginger Brussels Sprout Slaw.
2. Getting Kids to Choose Healthy: As kids get older and gain greater independence, they may begin to rebel against healthy options. So what’s a parent to do? Let your kids be or do an Amy Chua a la Tiger Mom? Olivia is inclined to go the middle way and gives us 5 tips on getting kids to choose healthy.
3. New Iron Guidelines for Kids: Up to 15% of babies and toddlers don’t get enough iron, according to the latest stats. This can lead to long-term developmental problems, according to Olivia. She shows us the new iron guidelines from the American Academy of Pediatrics and lists things that can either help or hinder iron absorption.
In addition, Olivia was on Crossover on CNTV with Eyee Hsu (half of the new Counting Sheep management) talking about New Year resolutions with Drew from World Health Store early this month.
