A stay in this stylish boutique hotel located in a 200-year-old courtyard home is a memorable experience. There are only five suites, decorated with carefully chosen antiques and furniture used by China's top leaders in the 1950s. Other decorative flourishes include birdcages, porcelain figurines and stained glass ceilings in the bathrooms. A former bomb shelter has been converted into a bar where one can view films from the Cultural Revolution while puffing on a Cuban cigar and sipping on a Mao Tai. Not easy to find: look for the red door with a number "9" on it. USD 150-190.
