Traditional Chinese Lanterns’ Festival at Ivy School

Lanterns’ Festival, on January 15 of the lunar calendar, marks the culmination as well as the conclusion of the traditional Chinese spring festival celebrations.

It is also a festival for children, where they make lanterns of various colors, shapes and designs, a tradition almost fading from modern lives. Ivy School will help revive this part of Chinese cultural legacy for children through traditional lantern making, lantern riddles, and lots of other fun activities, all designed to leave children and parents with great memories of what Chinese New Year used to be like!

The Learning Center is now offering Chinese classes! Private tutoring options are available now, for all levels of Chinese.

We will also be offering group classes from January, 2012. Conversational classes are available for beginners and lower-intermediate learners. If you would like to learn Chinese and meet others like you, come join us!

1) Simple Conversation

Example of topics covered :
Chinese Tones, Greetings and Self-Introduction, Ordering food, Taking a Taxi, Bargaining, At the Bank, At the Post Office, At the Supermarket, Asking for Directions, and Hobbies and Interests.

Time: 10 a.m. - 12 noon
20 hours per session

2) Smart Conversation

This course is for lower-intermediate learners or those that have taken the Basic Conversation course.

The course will cover deeper topics of Chinese culture, economy, sociology, history and politics with a focus on discussion. The instructor will work with various information sources such as magazines, videos, and blogs to increase exposure to different forms of Chinese media.

Salsa Babies offers a great workout, and chance to socialize with other moms (mamacitas) and an opportunity to introduce one’s child to music and movement. Not to mention, it’s perfect for people who have always wanted to learn to dance, but could never convince their partner to take lessons!
Classes are appropriate for babies approximately 6-8 weeks of age and up, as long as moms are comfortable supporting the baby in a carrier for the duration of the 45-minute class. All levels of fitness and dance experience are welcome.

This group is designed to help people who are feeling overwhelmed in their daily lives, have problems dealing with anxiety or change, or simply need a safe place to talk. By working in a group to focus on specific problems and restructure your connections and commitments, this group can help you focus on what is important in your life. Penny Wynne Cole is a trained counseling psychologist who has experience doing therapy with families as well as adult and child individuals.

FUNNY FINGERS: Handwriting workshop for kids!

Geared towards children who are just starting to learn how to write, Funny Fingers is a fun, interactive level 1 writing workshop that is patterned after the Handwriting Without Tears program. Children will learn basic writing skills such as how to form letters correctly and proper pencil grip. Multisensory teaching strategies are designed to appeal to all learning styles.

The programme will be led by the FSC’s team of therapist and specialist educators who have years of experience supporting children with global delays as well as behaviour and social/emotional deficits. The programme will, as much as possible, aim to place students together with peers of the same age with a high supervisor to student ratio.

Schedule

• The sessions are on Wednesdays from 16.00-17.30 and Saturdays from 10:00-11:30

• Programme dates:
February 1nd-March 24th (16 sessions)

For enrollment, parents will be required to complete a questionnaire; this will enable the staff to better understand the needs of your child in a social setting and adjust the programme according to their needs and preferences.
