Installing Webcams for your home?

Okay, I know I will sound like a paranoid mommy, but does anyone know know how to install webcams for my home so that I have some kind of assuarance that my aiyi is looking after my baby according to my instructions even when I am not around?

It isn't so much that I am worried that she will seriously abuse my kid. It is just the small things like not letting her watch too much TV and making sures she drinks enough water.

Many child care centers in the US use web-cams openly to allow parents to tune in on their offspring whenever they feel like it. I wouldn't want ot use a hidden camera, but be upfront with my aiyi and tell her it is just for me to log-in and take a look and my daughter whenever I have a few spare minutes at work.

Anyway - Would anybody know where I can find someone to wire up my home like that for me and find a system to operate it?

no need to apologize or feel bad at all- you have every right as a mother to make sure that your child is well taken care of so dont apologize for wanting to watch what's going on in your home with your child...good for you for being a good mommy

My husband and I actually looked into doing the same thing with our ayi. she is amazing but just in case as well... we decided not to in the end but just be a little careful.. from what I hear (this may be wrong) but selling the spy cameras is illegal and having the cameras installed in your home is illegal for this purpose as well... might want to check with someone about that but as most things go in china, i dont think you will get caught...

good luck and hope you see what you want and no more Smile

Re: Installing Webcams for your home?

Given a few criteria, it is very easy to set up

If you have a computer in your house, you just need to buy and install a web cam. Practical issue there will be how do you get the camera into the place that you want it? From what you have described, you will need cams all over your house.

But if you just wanted one in the living room, then you just put one there, run a cable to your computer, turn it on each morning via a chat application (yahoo, msn etc) and then have another user name account for the same application that you log onto at work.

Does that make sense?

There will be a few issues to iron out, such as setting your computer not to go to sleep, but they are all overcomeable.

Re: Installing Webcams for your home?

Thanks for all the tips !

Yeah I think this should be legal because I don't want to use hidden spy cams. I will tell my aiyi that I am doing this, and put install the cameras in obvious places like the baby's room and the living room basically the 2 places where the baby hangs out. I don't think the aiyi should feel offended because it really is just for me to actually see my baby for a bit whilst I am at work.

Thanks for the contacts, I will follow up and let you guys know how it progresses!

Re: Installing Webcams for your home?

I actually didn't do it in the end...

The landlord was being a pain about knocking out parts of the ceiling to install the wiring, and I didn't want to bother because I found an ayi system that works well, and I can drop in on them at home anytime I want, so it's really quite okay for now.

Nannycams have yet to take off in China because most families here tend use the old school ayi monitoring system: grandparents

i need a grannycam

i'm convinced she's showing the kid a lot of television and feeding her junk food ... two habits we're trying to prevent her from developing

Anyone else using nanny cams?

I bought a couple a while back on Amazon but never bothered to install them ...

Am curious to know if anyone has ever bought any in Beijing?

Re: Installing Webcams for your home?

Well I did use skype to watch my baby often at home while at work. Just enable auto answer mode. And make sure your computer dosent go to sleep when you put the lid down. It works great. Install a good microphone as long as you hear everything it should be good.

That's a pretty darn good (and relatively inexpensive) idea - thanks
