Re: Baby Market?

There are lots of places that sell things for babies and toddlers - what are you looking for? (clothes, toys, books, food pep items, baby bath, etc...) Also, what QUALITY do you want? This varies greatly.

Re: Baby Market?

lots of cheap baby clothes can be found at yashow

there are also two large chains with online ordering

leyou.com
lijiababy.com.cn

their physical stores are franchises so their quality varies widely.

Re: Baby Market?

crj: Nice to see you here. How's life in BJ so far? We have not met but I do know you are active in HK Expat forum. We moved from Guangzhou to Shanghai last year; and yes, Beijing is next after the October holidays. Big move!

Admin: We are expecting our 2nd and looking for anything for our 1st and 2nd. Must be export quality. In Guangzhou and Shanghai, there are malls that sells export stuff. Baby Guess for RMB1! Those were the days Sad Where is yashow?

Cheers.

P.S. From the title of this, I thoguht it was a discussion about babies for sale.

Re: Baby Market?

Sorry, in GZ. If you need to know, it is Baby Guess one piece (don't know the actual description) for babies below 1 year old. Most are samples taken from the manufacturers. What really matters is it is real stuff.

In shanghai, do visit NiHong Children's Market located on Pu An Road. It is an underground mall and they have cheap Chicco and other branded stuffs though a tad more expensive than GZ.

Re: Baby Market?

Alvin- so you are moving here soon - great! How old will your kids be (or due) when you arrive?

Beijing is much more baby friendly than HK in many ways, and much much less crowded. With the exception of IKEA nothing we have seen comes close to a 'HK Crowd'.

The best things we have found to make life easy with baby are without a doubt all the home delivery

Organic Milk and Yogurt - organiclife@greenyard.cn
Organic Vegetables -
jiyunliang@vip.163.com - 80 RMB for 4 Kilos, and you can choose what veggies you want
organicfarm@126.com - they send you a spreadsheet and you pick exactly what you want and how much
cio@swift.net.cn - they have a list and you choose
Organic Roce/Noodles/Grains/Beans etc.. - http//www.lohaocity.com/ they have a catalogue, and you call them to say what you want (they seem to always forget one or two things, but overall they do come very fast)

Baby Supplies - www.21baby.com, www.leyou.com, www.lijiababy.com.cn
They each have catalogues, and deliver within 2 days for items that are in stock. I found some things are very cheap, but the clothes seemed expensive to me in the catalogues.

Then comes the actual shopping
Second Hand Baby Clothes, Toys and more (all imported and not made in China) - Nu2Yu http//www.nu2yubabyshop.com/ I got a lot of great clothes for 10-15 RMB, and some more expensive items like a Japanese made tricycle for 300 that is really well made and in grea condition with sturdy rubber wheels.

Yashow - as mentioned above, on the 3rd floor and other markets have a decent selection of baby clothes - but quality seriously varies so inspect carefully and (as you know) bargain really hard.

Bookstore - Kids Republic is totally worth the trip - we were there for over an hour playing and choosing books for our toddler - cheap too. The average book price was 20RMB or less, which was great!
Poplar Kid's Republic Bookstore 蒲蒲兰绘本馆
Room 1362, Tower 13, Jianwai SOHO
东三环中路39号建外SOHO小区13号楼1362号或802号
www.poplar.com.cn
poplar@163.bj.com

Then comes the 'things to do'
Most of the malls seem to have a play area that they charge for - the prices range from 15-50 rmb and they are really great. So you can go with family, have a play, followed by lunch and a shop...
The Place - 50 RMB for a day pass
Wanjing New International Mall - I think it was 15 or 20 for a set time
and lots of others we haven't been to yet

The parks all have kids mini rides it seems, and are quite pram friendly - although the streets and shops certainly are not! But at least BJ is flat!

The Aquarium called Blue Zoo is fabulous! And an annual pass is only RMB 200 and the kids are free.

We are still exploring, but so far we are really pleased with all we have found and done this first month!

The biggest challenge is THE SIZE... BJ is HUGE HUGE HUGE and you can't just pop out and do a few errands at one time like you can in HK.

The Insight Guide to Beijing 2008 us out later in October, that will be a wealth of information for you.

Hope that helped a bit, I am sure you will find loads of things once you are here.

Re: Baby Market?

Yeah, HK is tough. Even for myself, I find walking from HSBC in Central to Star Ferry is like a hike.

My baby girl will be 1 year old on 18 Oct and 2nd is due 18 March 2008. Where's Yashow? Will be keen to join your playgroup in BJ!

Re: Baby Market?

hahaha, that is the flattest walk in HK! Although the new Star Ferry is much further.

Perfect timing to move to BJ with a one year old. At one year old a baby should start drinking whole fat milk (not formula), and you can get organic milk delivered fresh to your home!

Yashow (Yaxiu) seems to be used when referring to two of the markets here (I don't really know the reason, I am sure someone else does and can enlighten us here!), but the Silk Market is commonly referred to as Yashow. The 3rd floor has lots of kids clothes.
Silk Market
秀水市场
8 Xiushui Dongjie, Jianwai Dajie, Chaoyang District
朝阳区建外大街秀水东街8号

There is also another market building called Yashow... but I haven't been to that one yet so don't know if they have kids stuff or not.
Yashow Market
雅秀市场
58 Gongti Beilu, Chaoyang District

It is big and touristy and the vendors are what you expect... but it works for what it is. I do miss the more calm atmosphere of Stanley Market in HK!!

Our 'playgroup' so far consists of two 6 month old babies (both from HK!) in GuanHu/GreenLake, near ChaoYang Park, but there are quite a few playgroups it seems, it just depends where you live as to what is convenient. I don't have a formal playgroup for my 20 month old yet.

Get in touch when you arrive so we can meet up )

Our girl is allergic to cow's milk Sad Hope she will pass this pretty soon. We'll PM you once we settle down in BJ. See you!

I went there last week and on the 3rd floor there are some sellers offering Western style onesies with the 3-snap crotch, really cute designs, in all permutations of long/short sleeves and legs. Also saw some swaddling blankets made of nice flannel, cute patterns (I don't want to use the ultra-thick Chinese equivalent which feel more like straitjackets than blankets....)

We got the onesies for 15 RMB each, but I was with my Chinese hubby, so I don't know what price I would have gotten by myself. The blankets weren't expensive, and there was some other nice export quality stuff as well.

On the same floor some underwear sellers had maternity leggings, not the best quality, but they do the trick for a few months. Very stretchy and soft.

Re: Baby Market?

Generally speaking, places like Yashow and Silk Market are okay for buying baby clothes on the cheap, so long as your bargaining skills are up to snuff.

There is also a group of kids stores by the Leyou in the basement of Viva Shopping Mall in Shuangjing that sell relatively inexpensive clothes and shoes.

But we find the best deals of all are on taobao.
