My vote for least favorite airline: United
Just got back from a trip home and after flying 12 hours in each direction with United I've decided to give them my Least Favorite Airline award. Yecch.

Oh great. We are booked to travel with them to San Francisco on the 23rd. I haven't travelled on this airline since 1997, and after two kids, EVERYTHING is hazy, so don't have many fresh memories to go on... I honestly thought anything would be better than China Air. Now I'm nervous!
Are they still making you pay to use the headsets for the movie?

Re: My vote for least favorite airline: United
No you don't have to pay for the headsets but most of the freebies don't work ... not that you'd actually want to watch the crummy films they'll be showing.
Some highlights:
-- We spent 2 hours on the tarmac waiting for the plane to refuel.
-- On the way there, my wife and I were unable to get seats together, despite checking in four hours before departure time. If you want to get seats together, do not expect to be able to get that upon arrival at the airport. (later we were able to change seats with someone -- luckily)
-- On the way back, the gate staff reconfirmed with us that our seats were in the bulkhead/bassinet row (we were traveling with our baby) right before we boarded. When we got on the plane, it turns out our seats were two rows behind that row, hence squirming baby spent 14 hour flight with no place to lie down.
-- A stewardess fetching tea for another passenger managed to pour the hot tea on my pants while I was carrying my baby, and afterwards scowled at me and walked off, neither apologizing nor helping me with a napkin or anything.
-- The lunch that was served was left in the heating units so long that the salad was piping hot (with melted cheese on top).
-- I found it amusing that the snack they offer you mid-flight is a bowl of instant noodles. I can't think of a snack that better combines the image of financial desperation with extreme inconvenience (for both passengers and flight staff) Ever try to eat a bowl of noodles brimming over with boiling water in a cramped seat while the plane is moving and the passenger in front of you is constantly adjusting his seat?

and why am i not suprised to see this report:
Mice on flight send officials scurrying
Chinese inspectors found eight mice, dead and alive, on a United Airlines flight to Beijing after the airline reported the stowaways to local quarantine officials upon landing on Sunday afternoon, Xinhua news agency said today.
The report prompted an "emergency team" to rush to the aircraft, Xinhua said, to "put rat poison and mice traps at every possible corner on the aircraft, including the cockpit".
"Eight mice, dead and (alive), were found at last ... hidden in pillows," the agency said.

Re: My vote for least favorite airline: United
You are really making me dread my upcoming flight on United. Guess I better not let the kid wander around too much, she might start playing with one of those critters or accidently pick up one of the poison boxes. I guess since their filing of bankruptcy. Their employees or formal employees have a website www.untied.com which addresses some of the many problems both passengers and staff members have experienced over the past 10 years. But as Watson said on the other forum, "don't they eat wires and things?" that was my thought.
Having said all that, I really did not enjoy the Continental service the last time I went. The best airline I have taken to America has been Air Nippon. I would have taken them again, but it takes too long and even more expensive...but very comfortable and good service. Have to say that Virgin Air was great also when we went to London a few years ago.
Anyway, thanks for the headup and we will be careful.

Admin, thanks for sharing this experience.
Was this a code share flight with Air China? Or was it 100% United plane and crew?
I ask because we are flying Air China to NY, and we see that United to NY is the exact same time (just costs more). ...
For Air China, I had to go to their head office in XiDan to buy our tickets and book the baby bassinette. This is the only place to do it. Then tney gave me a piece of paper saying we have a bassinette, but there is no guarantee we have seats together (even though we are a 9 month old, 24 month old and two adults) as we can't book seats until the day of the flight at the airport. They also said, that for NY to BJ I have to book the bassinette in NY and they don't know how (so I will call Air China in NY tonight to start working on this!).
So needless to say, your note above is not very inspiring for our upcoming flight

From what i understand there is some sort of "premium economy" class that is something like a frequent flyer plan for united, and if you join it, you can select your seats in advance. check their website for details.
Unfortunately I think the only way to maximize your chances is to whine a lot and push the issue until it is resolved.

Re: My vote for least favorite airline: United
We booked our flights through United's website (cheaper to do it this way). You can pre-reserve your seats when you book the flight, and even choose where you're going to sit, so if you want bulkhead seats, best to book WAY in advance. And print off every single website step along the way, stash it in a folder and go to check-in, fully armed, folder at the ready.
Only time will tell, however, whether or not our pre-booked seat allocations are honoured.
Watch this space.

Re: My vote for least favorite airline: United
Well, just back from our trip to the States, via United and thought I'd report in on what happened with this questionable airline....
...drum roll please...
I am more than relieved to announce they were great! Had no problems at all and in fact, most of it was even a pleasure.
Check in, seats, kids meals, all smooth and easy both ways. In fact, they were very organised and fast.
Aircraft left on time both ways. Arrived on time too.
On the leg over, we were even given a large bottle of champagne after mentioning to a hostie this was our first visit to San Francisco (we took it with us and drank it on our first night in this gorgeous city).
Leg room was fairly good.
The meals were actually quite good for airline food and the drinks were plentiful and frequent.
The kids received more attention than expected and were always acknowledged and smiled at and a little spoiled.
Sure - there were plenty of hosties who really should consider a job change (but then, wouldn't you be grumpy if you had spent 25 years serving 300 people who are caged in like animals? traipsing up and down the economy cabin ad infinitum - a 747 is awfully long!) but overall it was a very pleasant experience. We even had (our one and only) call bell answered almost immediately. Shock horror.
So admin - looks like you had a run of bad luck that day!
If I do have any criticism, these United 747s are a little ancient and crusty. I flew for 4 years and I know my aircraft... this one creaked and bowed a little too much for comfort at times, and I am fear-of-flying free, trust me.
And what's with the inflight entertainment? Golly - the worst international airlines had better in the early 90s! It was virtually ONE huge pull down screen (do those still exist) for the entire bulkhead section of economy, with a dodgy choice of films (only one movie for kids on one leg) and crackling headsets.
After being spoiled by Qantas for so many years, I can honestly say I would pay the extra money and fly with them to the States next time. With 12 to 14 loooooooong hours in front of you and 2 small kids, you want as much help as you can get, and the entertainment system Qantas offers is glorious. Individual, adjustable tv screens on the back of every seat (yes, in economy too) and a huge range of fab movies in many genres, including kids. Also tonnes of tv shows, also for kids. TWO channels for kids, actually. AND video games. Lots of them. AND they give you a Wiggles backpack with 2 hours of junk inside. Perfect. (No, I do not work in the marketing deptartment at Qantas.)
The last time we did a 12 hour leg with them, my daughter was 6. She sat for 9 hours in front of that screen without moving. Not a word of a lie. Not even to pee.
It's GOOD.
So - all said and done. For the price we paid and the expectations I had, United were an ok to good experience.
Now, if I could just shake off the jetlag. Cursed firecrackers...

Good to hear that your experience was not traumatic!
I do agree with you on the aircraft though -- seems to me that the simple addition of increased entertainment options shoots customer satisfaction up dramatically ... less time to complain and fidget if you've got stuff to do -- and that goes for adults as well as children!

What I hate is when you book a flight with one airline, only to find out that it's actually being "operated" by another. I flew back to the UK with Virgin - paying a little extra for the joy, I might add - and it turned out to be the same old Air China plane and staff.
In my eyes, Richard Branson owes me least one free flight into space on his new spaceship.

As I am leaving on a United flight in less than two weeks, it was reassuring to hear good news although am kind of disappointed about the entertainment options. Hoepfully the little one will sleep most of the time on the outbound trip.

Take things to do! There is nothing for littlies to do. Nada. And 12 hours is a looooooooooong time!
Our kids still did okay - we just provided everything, and snacks too. (United also don't provide a kids play pack.) We even ended up taking our laptop so they could at least get 2 hours of the Wiggles. And if your kids are old enough, consider taking along electronic items like Nintendo DS or gameboys or even a tamagotchi. Even if you have to buy them, it would be worth it!
Good luck!

Re: My vote for least favorite airline: United
Hmm, looks like I might run into some troubles in my return flight to China. For some reason they cannot give me a seat selection even though I am a Mileage Plus member. They have requested a bassinet for the child and indicated that should not be a problem, but cannot confirm that we will be in the bulkhead. I am guessing that means that maybe my wife or I can sit there, but not both of us but can't get a direct answer. The Beijing office says I can call the Chicago office and ask and when I suggested that perhaps they can call as well, they said they can't. Obviously that makes no sense that I can call and ask and they can't.
In mentioning sense, I changed two adult tickets with no charge, but to change the infant ticket who does not have a seat, I needed to pay 80 kuai. Of course I paid it, just could not understand the point of it. They told me that I need to pay 10% of the change fee for the adult tickets for which there is no charge. So, 10% of zero is now 80.
Anyway, hope that is the biggest problem I encounter.

Re: My vote for least favorite airline: United
Bizarre! Although, this 'not being able to call' sounds more like a typical Chinese '*thing' than a United 'thing'.
One other warning I do have for you - they are charging US$50 per bag if one of your suitcases weighs more than 50 pounds. Ours weighed 70 pounds and our other case weighed around 25 pounds. So, our combined luggage weight topped a bantam 95 pounds.
It did not matter that each person is allowed 50 pounds and we had 4 people. By my calculations, this gives us 200 pounds in allowable luggage weight. "No ma'am - this is a 'per bag' rule. If you can divide this 95kg between more suitcases so that none weigh over 50 pounds, the charge won't apply."
"But I don't have another empty suitcase."
"Sorry, Ma'am."
Hmmm.
Take two large suitcase and divide the weight!
*Strange and inexplicable reasons why something can't be done - an issue of frightening recurrance in China.
Example:
Case A) "Fuhren, the reason your airconditioning is not blowing cold enough is because it is colder outside than it is inside the house." Huh? It's NOT because of the six foot layer of dust in the filter?
Case B) "Fuhren, your freezer is not cold enough and all your thawing chicken thighs are swimming in a puddle of icecream because you have a bag of Japanese candy on top of the fridge." So it's not because the fridge is a heaving and clunking old piece of junk with a peeling door seal that needed replacing two years ago?
Case C) "Fuhren, I have my arms wrapped in bandages and red welts all over my shoulders because you put the airconditioning on yesterday." Ahhh... can't explain that one.
All true stories.
Golly - this hot/cold thing needs to explored further... but that's another posting.

Re: My vote for least favorite airline: United
Well, we are back from our trip to the USA and back on United and my comments are as follows:
Trip from Beijing to Chicago was excellent. We had bulkhead seats all to our own, thus 5 seats for the 3 of us, so the baby was able to stretch out and sleep most of the flight.
In Chicago the trip changed drastically. They put us on our connecting flight at around 9pm, then told us at 9:30 that they needed a new crew to fly us. Then at 10pm, they told us the plane had mechanical problems and followed that up with the bad news that the crew was illegal because of hours worked and that the flight was no cancelled.
Then they sent 150 people out to be greeted by just one Customer Service representative, not a good sight. They then added another who announced that the flight was cancelled due to the pilots being illegal and accordingly no free hotel rooms. Then 5 minutes later after all the confusion, they said they would provide the free hotels which was great except for the fact it was no after 11pm and the new flight was at 6am. They said we can take the hotel shuttle which will only hold about 15 people and their luggage and will return every 20 minutes or so. Quickly calculating that we might get to the hotel in about 2 hours, I opted to take a taxi..best $12, I ever spent as we got to the hotel before the others.
Flight to Florida that morning was fine, however they do need to improve their service.
The return to Beijing was pretty much uneventful except for the feeling that the staff does not care that much about the passengers. For example, I was told that since the baby did not have a seat, she was not entitled to any food. No food for 13 hours? We did manage to get some though after complaining.
Overall, I cannot say I was totally unsatisfied except for the Chicago problem which I guess was not their fault.
So, if the price is right again, I would use them.

Re: My vote for least favorite airline: United
You would think they would save the bulkhead rows for people with babies, after all we do pay for the baby ticket. We're about to do the Beijing-Chicago flight with our 8 month old and are pretty worried about it. First I booked a ticket for a later date and they didn't let us pick the seats. Then I changed the date and they did let us pick the seats, but the only 2 together were way in the back by a window. The ticket lady said she didn't know if the bulkhead seats were blocked or taken by someone else, and we have to either try to get the seats at check in, trade with the people already in the seats, or pay 100 bucks each to upgrade to economy plus.

Re: My vote for least favorite airline: United
argh. I flew United again this past summer. Why oh why did i do this?
Highlights:
they lost my luggage. When it was delivered to me 36 hours later, my digital camera and ipod (plus their chargers) had been stolen from the bag. Obviously someone had a lot of time on alone with my bags as they didn't steal other power cords that were in the same spot as the camera/ipod.
I know i know I should have never packed anything valuable -- i usually don't.
Let this be a warning to you all. United sucks the big one. Royally.

dammit. I'm on another united flight next month.
It was the cheapest fare by far ... but this time, I'm prepared~
-- booked seats together early, will reconfirm 57 times before flight
-- will bring lots of goodies to keep myself and the little one entertained, in the event of delays
-- will be mentally prepared for the typical crew hostility.

just got back from my latest united trip. Not so bad this time, I have fewer complaints ... though really the stewardesses were atrocious. Really nasty people, for the most part.
It seems they've been trained by the department of homeland security and they appear to be much more into attempting to control passenger requests via hostility than they are about service. Sad, really ...
and while I appreciate the seatback video available for free in the economy section, is there really any reason in 2010 that a video system should be playing films that, based on the interference and skipping, must be broadcast using a 1970s-era VHS videotape system?

Re: My vote for least favorite airline: United
I have flown the Continental flight to Newark on many occasions with the last one being in Mid June. Flight has been typically on time during the trips and once in Newark there are many options if you are going into NYC or of course a multitude of connecting flights to almost anywhere.
The flight attendants as a rule are generally older with a lot of experience. Unfortunately not much of this experience has included smiling or a genuine concern for customer service. It is almost as if they are doing you a favor when you ask them something and not a part of their job. As this flight leaves at 3:45pm Beijing time, at around 9 or 10pm many people are starting to sleep and you almost never see the crew, until they put all the cabin lights on to serve breakfast which would be at about 3am Beijing time.
The flight takes about 13 hours which is not too bad and the entertainment systems work fairly well. It is a good flight for those traveling with kids as much of their flying time will be during the time they usually go to sleep, so it should be easy for them to fall asleep.

Sorry to break the bad news, now Air China is taking some Code-sharing flights with United. So make sure to double check before you book the flights when you specially want to avoid Nasty US airlines.
The United flight we took this time is UA897, also bare the Code CA8897. means if you book a CA8897 flight, you actually get on UA897 plan.
