Homeschooling in Beijing
So, how many homeschoolers are there in Beijing? I am homeschooling my 13 year old daughter and would like to contact others in the same situation as I am to compare tactics.
Also I want to organize a highschool physics class that will meet twice a week during the day, two hours each time with a professional, experienced physics teacher (PhD - Columbia University). The total course will last four semesters and prepare the student for the SAT physics exam and begin preparing for the AP physics exams. Course materials and homework will be provided (extremely well done). The class will have 2-5 students total. Fees will depend on number of students (sorry, this subject is beyond me).

Alas, the URL above doesn't work - people need to be invited to the homeschoolers group, and you can do so by emailing beijing_homeschoolers-subscribe@yahoogroups.com.
Good luck!

i don't have kids yet but when i do i wouldn't homeschool them. i think kids need interaction with their environment, especially in a place like beijing and if you are a expat, you should especially let your kids out there and make them get to know their surroundings. that's just my opinion.

Hi, I am a mum with two children age 6 and 4. We are chinese family, but my children were born in London and we lived in London for almost 8 years. Our family just moved back to Beijing three weeks ago. I am struggling about the my children's education in beijing. As my children don't want to go to local chinese school, we are considering educate them at home. I would love to have some home school families to contact to in order to have more experience. my email address is: klj200266thj@live.com

Re: Homeschooling in Beijing
There is a home schoolers network here in Beijing and I know of a few families who think it was the best option for them. Check out these links:

the correct procedure to join BJ Homeschoolers is to email a bit about yourself to Julie

and she will manually invite you.
There are over 100 families on that group now.

Re: Homeschooling in Beijing
I appreciate the above info, as I'm here with my two children (here for 6 months while my husband works), aged 3 and 6 years, and as we're only here for a somewhat short amount of time, I'm homeschooling. Although I've certainly realized the need for added social interaction as they days progress. We're staying in a serviced residence in Haidian, and there are very few children around for them to interact with. They've been playing together much more than they did back home, so that's been nice. But they still desire and could benefit from the exposure to other children.

Any Haidian mums or dads out there who are looking for a playgroup?

Re: Homeschooling in Beijing
I'd love to find out more on a playgroup in Haidian! As I mentioned, above, we've been here since mid-November and are only here until mid-May, but my kids would LOVE to have other little ones to interact with. With the weather being as it is, and still getting used to (do you ever really get used to it, though?) the air quality/pollution, we've spent a lot of time inside our hotel apartment. The hotel has a modest play area, but without other children to play with, aside from the occasional one (who have all been younger and guarded) who wanders in and we don't see again, it's already losing its luster. Still learning how to navigate the area, and haven't been out with the kids while my husband is at work (we go out in the evening or on weekends, since he's much better at directional stuff, and has traveled here before) but I'm going to need to figure things out, lest we become complete shut-ins.

K12 International Academy is a great cross for those wanting to homeschool with the freedom of being able to day trip, work on your own schedule and pace. K12 is about $5000 usd a year. They provide all texts, materials, and teachers. You, as the learning coach, are the mentor, enforcer, cheerleader, and tutor (to a point). K12 has certified teachers, on line classes, teachers that teach the classes and are available for conferences, help, and monitoring the progress and quality of the childs work.
K12 is a private on line, school that has curriculum for grades Kinder to 12th. The materials are fantastic! My daughter in 7th grade, started this program here in Washington State this past September as an alternative to a brick & mortar school. She wasnt being challenged enough, and the peer "junior high school crap" was over taking her. This has been the best of both worlds! I suggest if you are looking for some great "homeschooling" need some help with curriculum, some direction with curriculum, but the flexiablity of homeschooling...this is it!
The Asian K12 is based out of Singapore, they have I believe about 10 kids here in Beijing. This is relatively new in Asia, so its growing.
When we move over in the next 6 weeks, my daughter will continue her studies in K12, without much disruption in learning something new, living in a new place, etc etc. We will have something familiar! What a concept. Check it out! You might be surprised!
