Hong Kong in December

While being in Asia for many years, I have not spent much time in HK and was wondering if anyone can tell me what the weather is like in December. I have heard that some of the outlying islands such as Lantau have reasonably nice beach areas and the water is clean. So, the thought is that we can combine some beach time along with a visit to Disney while there, so any thoughts or recommendations would be appreciated. I know it will be warmer than Beijing but not as warm as Thailand, but Thailand does not have a Disney for our 2 year old.

thanks.

Re: Hong Kong in December

just came back from a trip there. temps were quite pleasant during the day -- in the 60s (Fahrenheit) and sunny, much like September in the East Coast in the US.

nights were a bit cooler (50s Fahrenheit), but because of the humidity it feels more chilly than you'd expect. I was fine with a fleece zippy and a down vest.

as for the islands, lantau is terrific, as is cheng chau and lamma. the ocean's not warm enough to swim (well, I did see oner person snorkeling with a wet suit in early december, but that's a rarity), but you can definitely hang out on the beach and go for nice walks/hikes on the islands.

all in all, I highly recommend HK! and am happy to answer questions...

Re: Hong Kong in December

I'm sorry I did not see this before the holiday. For what it's worth, my family has spent the last two Christmas periods in HK. We love it. Not only is it warm enough to walk around with a simple light sweater during that time, but it's a festive Chinese place to be for shopping, food, and all the delights you'd want. At night, some might find it helpful to have a light jacket or maybe a scarf with hoody. But I felt fine in a sweater and jeans. The beaches are nice to walk around too. Not too breezy and you're still only a hop away from all the entertainment, Disney, sea park, and others.

Hong Kong seems to get better and better every time I visit.

The shopping in the HK airport is the BEST
