Does Hard Water Cause Skin Problems?

I was curious as to what Beijingers think about their water supply. Beijing's water is hard water, full of minerals and metals, which technically (at least by the WHO and others) doesn't cause major health problems. But some people think that it may exacerbate people's already dry skin issues during the superdry months here. What does everyone think? Does anyone have before/after tales with those inline soft-water filters you can install to your main water line?

I personally am unsure of the actual evidence on water, but I know that I have terribly itchy dry skin in the winters, so if buying a water filter for the shower could help this issue, then I may consider buying one. I saw a showerhead filter at Sundan for 568, not too bad...

Re: Does Hard Water Cause Skin Problems?

Because hard water deposits minerals on your skin, it's like to be one of the causes of irritated skin. But as for dryness? Seems like heavy duty lotion and a humidifier would be more effective.

as much as I fear dry skin, somehow the concept of rubbing lots of oily lotion -- which contain another cocktail of chemicals, and especially in China where fake products make it to the shelves and god only knows what the legitimate ones actually contain -- may be even worse for you than letting your skin feel a little dry.

Mama Earth Angel Baby has a coveted "zero" rating on the Environmental Working Group's Cosmeticsdatabase dot com. It's available at Babygro and at World Health Store. Organic Earth (see um a competitor's website called City something for info and rating) they have wonderful shea butter based rubs, delicious scents from essential oils (or unscented) and cold crafted soaps. These two are excellent choices if u don't feel like making your own soaps, that is! Liora

Re: Does Hard Water Cause Skin Problems?

my 3-year-old daughter has a persistent rash around her mouth -- seems like it comes and goes but is never not present.

i think it has something to do with one of the following:

-- the toothpaste she's using (which would explain why it's concentrated around her mouth)
-- something in the soap and/or lotion that we put on her face

I'm thinking this:

anyone else having this issue?

Re: Does Hard Water Cause Skin Problems?

^ regarding the above: I took my daughter to a doctor and she prescribed:

-- zyrtec antihistamine
-- zinc pills
-- mild steroid cream

small doses of each for 5 days ... plus:

-- stop any sort of lotion on face
-- use only mild soap
-- use non-flouride toothpaste

we're doing this and on day 3 it's completely gone.

so it seems like it has been some sort of allergic reaction, we just don't know to what at this point.

I suspect the toothpaste.

I'm eager to see what happens when we stop the medicine

Re: Does Hard Water Cause Skin Problems?

Keep us posted. Reina sometimes gets a reaction like that from eating certain foods when she gets it on her face around her mouth. Could be something like that too. Guess it depends how messy your daughter is while eating. Sometimes Reina likes to wear her meal.

Re: Does Hard Water Cause Skin Problems?

Concerning water/dry skin/sweating: I'd like to share with you guys something that we discovered recently with our son Julian who is almost 2. About two weeks ago he started really itching his palms and in between his fingers. We noticed it was mostly in the morning, or after he had been running around. He took daily baths and we always put tons of natural baby body lotion on him, and make sure he drinks plenty of water, so we were perplexed.

My hubby took him to the Children's Hospital by Ritan Park and the doc said it was a heat rash caused by overheating and then the sweat irritating his skin, causing it to itch.
She prescribed a topical cream for his hands, which we put on at night and during nap time, so it doesn't rub off.

Apparently it's common here due to the high fluctuations in temperature: warm in the apartment, cold outside, warm and cozy in bed at night time/nap time, and sweating a little, and then running around playing outside.

I realized that my palms also itch when I flip-flop between cool and warm places (like getting on the subway in a very warm coat and then walking outside for a while)...so it's not just kids.

The cream seems to be helping, but if anyone else has other suggestions, please add. Does anyone else have a very itchy back due to this dry weather!? Of course, itchy in the spot that you can't scratch yourself!! haha.
Oh, and the doc reminded us to keep him in layers and not overdress him, which is quite commonly done here.

Re: Does Hard Water Cause Skin Problems?

you don't need to shower every day -- it dries out the skin, especially with Beijing's harsh water, and removes much-needed natural oils. Just use a warm flannel every second day to wash all the important parts (ie. one day shower, next day flannel and so on). For sore skin nothing works better than vit e oil (try the world health store). Failing that, use cold-pressed olive oil that you can buy at most foreign supermarkets.

I find a touch of WD-40 usually does the trick.

Oh wait, that's for dry hinges. I always get those things confused.

Re: Does Hard Water Cause Skin Problems?

@CanadianGal, have you changed washing powder since arriving in China? Its extremely destructive to human tissue (breaks down proteins) so might be causing your problems as particles do remain in clothing and can be reactivated by sweating or temperature change.

Just an idea

^ what's a good washing power to use?

PS update on my daughter's rash: finished day 5 of medication, rash gone, no medicine last night, no rash has reappeared ... will wait and see.

Re: Does Hard Water Cause Skin Problems?

Good call with the washing powder/laundry detergent question, Herbie!
We use a liquid detergent called Earth Choice natural for sensitive skin - it's an Austrailian brand and was overpriced but we bought it when we first moved here because that's similar to what we used at home in Canada.
HOWEVER...my hubby bought some liquid fabric softener and we had been using that recently to help with the static cling issues! I'm not going to use it anymore...I think that might be the problem.

Thanks for the reminder to go scent-dye-"everything"-free Smile

P.S. Any recommendations for a large bottle of all-natural body lotion? We go through it so fast at our house!
Also, where do people buy truly scent/dye free natural liquid laundry detergents at a good price?

Thanks!

bad news on the rash front: It's back, albeit less virulent. Reappeared on Saturday, about 5 days after we stopped the anti-histamines, zinc and steroid cream.

so it's not the flouride in the toothpaste ... maybe it's the water? my other suspect is cinnamon -- she loves cinnamon toast, perhaps that's doing it to her.

Dibs on her cinnamon toast! Hope you figure it out as rashes are no fun to deal with.

They are happily brought into the house, sometimes they come as gifts, sometimes they are free, a lot of the time they are made from synthetics or contain dyes. Might be a cuddly toy.

Re: Does Hard Water Cause Skin Problems?

Hard water is really very harmful for skin especially for kid’s skin. Many harmful minerals like copper, magnesium and lead exist in hard water that causes many skin problems like itching and black spots. So to prevent from these problems you can also try some magnetic water conditioners or chemical water softeners.

Re: Does Hard Water Cause Skin Problems?

We LOVE our shower filters. Well, I call 'em shower filters, but one is on the kids' and my bathtub, and one is on the hubby's shower.

Water is not DRINKABLE, but the chlorine, chloramines, metals and some minerals are removed. It is a little softer. It has helped our skin and smells and feels so so good. Aquasana-china is what we got, American Charlie Thomson is the representative here.
