WSJ: China’s Divorce Rate Crosses New Threshold

"In 2009, according to a report by the Civil Affairs Ministry, one in every five marriages ended in divorce. Less than a decade ago, in 2000, that number was one in seven. The report is drawing attention from Chinese media. Recent articles in China Daily, Shanghai Daily, and People’s Daily discuss the trend..."

Any armchair sociologists care to speculate?

one in five? I heard it was closer to 50%. Maybe that's just in the cities or something.

Based on my very limited research/understanding, that's still far behind the West.
The divorce rate in America for first marriage, vs second or third marriage:
50% percent of first marriages, 67% of second and 74% of third marriages end in divorce, according to Jennifer Baker of the Forest Institute of Professional Psychology in Springfield, Missouri.

Re: WSJ: China’s Divorce Rate Crosses New Threshold

I'd imagine it's lower in China than in the US too. However, I also think that the rate is not 50/50 in the US, like it used to be.

Apparently, divorce rates have been dropping since 2007.

The New York Times:
"In the states for which data were available, there were 3.4 divorces per 1,000 people in 2009, following rates of 3.5 divorces per 1,000 people in 2008 and 3.6 divorces per 1,000 people in 2007."

More than 2.5 mln Chinese couples divorced in 2010

Quote:
A report released on Thursday by China's Ministry of Civil Affairs said that about 2.68 million Chinese couples divorced in 2010, up 8.5 percent on the previous year.

According to the report on China's social service development in 2010, 2.01 million Chinese couples registered their divorces at civil affairs departments and 668,000 couples ended their marriage in court.

The report also shows that the divorce rate in China has risen over the past five years, with an average annual growth rate of 7 percent.
