Deciding whether or not to move the family from Los Angeles to Beijing: How's the health system?
Dear all,
I'm very new to this website. I am seeking for advice. My husband
is looking to move the family from Los Angeles to Beijing for work. We
have a yr old baby and I was wondering how the health system is in
Beijing. Our current medical insurance carrier is very well rounded and
I'm afraid that Beijing will not have anything comparable to offer.
Would we be able to get our baby's scheduled vaccines throughout
the years? What if there was a medical emergency for any of us? How does
it work? I heard from a friend who was in another part of China, that
there wasn't any international hospital in her area, forcing her to
fly to Hong Kong to either give birth, or get her children vaccinated.
If someone could shine a light for me, I need some more convincing
before I can decide to move the family to Beijing!
Please help!
MNH

Re: Deciding whether or not to move the family from Los ...
Hi:
Beijing is very expat friendly compared to other parts of China and there a number of international health clinics here that cater to the expat community:
You can see the full list in our directories here -
http://www.beijing-kids.com/directory/Family-Health
Among them, Beijing United Family Hospital, Beijing Intl SOS Clinic, IMC, Vista and Bayley and Jackson are popular.
These clinics can all handle insurance, but you'll want to consult their perspective websites for more detailed info.
Local hospitals run the gamut of the very poor to very decent, and foreigners tend to go to Peking Medical Union Hospital and the Sino-Japanese Friendship Hospital for treatment.
For a much better idea of what you can expect and want to know living here in Beijing, you might want consider reading The Insiders Guide to Beijing 2009 Edition, which our company publishes. It contains a lot of useful info pertaining to living and working in Beijing, including health care issues.

Hi MNH,
You'll be pleased to know that Beijing has excellent medical care and that depending on your health care provider you may be able to simply add China to the list of countries you're covered in.
Many international health insurers offer coverage in Beijing, for more info see here:

For an overview of the health care in Beijing, see here:

As far as international standards, Beijing has come a long way. Yes, there are parts of China where the medical care is less than adequate, but that isn't a problem here. The only catch is that with international standards come international prices. If you have decent health insurance, this shouldn't be a problem for you or your family. There is absolutely no need for you to travel to Hong Kong for treatment. Some good clinics/hospitals in Beijing are:

Good luck! And keep us posted on your decision

Re: Deciding whether or not to move the family from Los ...
healthcare is not really a big problem these days. Beijing United is great, there's other western-operated clinics and good local hospitals as well.
having said that, there's always some bug or two going around -- one year we're panicking about bird flu, the next year swine flu, the year after that hoof and mouth disease or something like that ...
i suppose it's not all that different from elsewhere ... though the population density here means disease transmission happens a little faster ...

Thank you everyone for your input. I'm torn apart, just the idea of moving to another continent! Arg.. I'm so stressed!
Now, it's looking like we will have to pay for medical insurance out of our pocket. Can someone suggest where I would obtian medical insurance and what are the average cost?
Thanks,
MNH

Hi - You can contact the insurance agent our company uses - her name is Paige Mushinsky and she can be contacted at paige@expatsolutions.com
She represents a range of providers, including the one our company uses, William Russel (a UK based provider) - you can google them for more info.

You may find that your healthcare needs over here are better tended to than back in LA. Good luck with the decision.

At the end of the day, after all the panic and worry and stress, you'll probably find that moving to Beijing is one of the most positive and life changing experiences you and your family will ever have. I was just as nervous as you when I moved from clean, sunny Australia to China, but I wouldn't change my decision for the world -- even on the bad days! Hopefully we'll see you soon.

Hi all,
Thanks for all your input again. We are nearing a decision and it seems like we may be going soon! Lots to think about still, but it seems that we can't quantify the life experience to live in Beijing with my family. Right?
I'm now looking for a rental place. Any family in the CBD area?

The brunt of expats in Beijing are in the CBD area, so you should have no trouble meeting people and getting around town, as that general area is the part of town that has developed the fastest. Any more specific idea of where you will be living?

Beijingkids: I'm debating if we want to be living near work or near a friend's place. Sanlitun Village or CBD....But everything is still up in the air until we get there and visit the appartments.

If it was me, I'd live near work. It sounds like your office is in the CBD and your friend is in Sanlitun -- in which case, they're a quick 10min cab ride away. Living in the CBD gives you quick access to Sanlitun and you'll find people flow back and forth from those areas very easily.
Traffic here can be crazy (10min cab ride turns in to a 45min cab ride) and long subway rides do get tiring. The less you have to travel, the better. And in my experience, travelling to and from work everyday is pretty stressful. In short -- live close to work, you'll be better off.

Live near work for sure - Beijing's traffic is the worst in the world

I've moved closer to work and it makes the world of difference. Instead of commuting with others on sweaty, packed subway cars, I bike to work and it only takes 15 minutes. I'm with Zhen: definitely live close to work. You won't mind traveling to fun places, but you have to go to work five times out of the week, so live closer to the office!
As for hospitals: I've been to both Beijing United Family Hospital (BJU) and Bayley and Jackson and they're fine. Also, BJU was where my friend had her appendix taken out - it was fine. They're both professional hospitals.
