Hand, foot and mouth disease in Beijing

I read an article in the China Daily today (http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/metro/2010-06/29/content_10032978.htm) re. HFM disease and the figures were pretty shocking:

"According to the Beijing health bureau, more than 22,000 children were diagnosed with HFMD as of June 20 this year, a rise of 90 percent compared with the same period last year. More than 200 were severe cases and seven deaths were reported due to the disease."

I was wondering if anyone encountered any problems with HFM in their community/school?

one of the kids in my daughter's preschool came down with it. That class was dismissed for two weeks (which they said is the government policy).

Really, 2 weeks? That seems like a huge disruption. I wonder if that "govt" policy is actually effective in preventing HFM. Surely once one case is found it has already spread quickly to others. My understanding is that HFM is very contagious

luckily the disease, though highly infectious, isn't usually severe
