Baptism of fire

Hi all,

I posted on this forum a while ago about coming to Beijing with my 7 yr old. Well, here I am now! Great place, but unfortunately on the first day, after taking out my first bit of cash, I had my wallet nicked from me near Tian'anmen Sq. Luckily with 'only' 700RMB in but unfortunately my only bank card was in there too. I am living off limited funds until the end of next week, trying to eat cheaply with a child that doesn't particularly like any spicy Chinese food (Rice and Vegetables so far... works well..). And I'm not exactly able to do much with him in terms of the trips I had planned. I can get cash via western union, but it sucks to have to do that, and there's a limit. Everything seems more expensive than I expected!

Any suggestions on what we can do to while away the hours until our return!? Any help much appreciated! I also speak no language, Reminds me of one of my favourite songs a little.. You Can Call Me Al by Paul Simon. "He doesn't speak the language, he holds no currency...". I like my singing, so let me know if you know of any western type karaoke places that will allow children too...!

Thanks and kindest regards,

Martin.

Re: Baptism of fire

Sorry to hear that - what a terrible way to get introduced to Beijing.

If you're on a tight budget, you can still take advantage of plenty of free attractions - pretty much every public park in town is free. We usually go to Ritan Park near our house.

The Village at Sanlitun has a nice fountain in the plaza in its middle where kids love to play in hot weather, or you can wander the hutongs near Nanluoguxiang and Gulou and then take a stroll around Houhai.

If the heat is a concern, then cool off in the confines of Solana (a mall at the northwest corner of Chaoyang Park) or head out to Wangfujing and chill out in the Oriental Plaza Mall's AC.

Another good place to go on weekdays is the Tuanjiehu Water Park or other swimming spots around town.

And there's also the Science and Technology Museum by the Water Cube and Bird's Nest - admission is relatively cheap.
