Baby slapping aboard flight sets off debate

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—America's latest folk-hero flight attendant may be the one on a Southwest Airlines jet who took a 13-month-old baby from her mother after the woman slapped the crying child for kicking her.

The flight attendant's actions, however, set off an intense debate: When and how should bystanders intervene?

Re: Baby slapping aboard flight sets off debate

I did see a woman with a 2 year old girl taking a flight to Beijing from London last summer. I think she was an a-yi, she definitely wasnt a blood relative. She was screaming abuse at this little girl. we all looked at her in disgust but nobody did anything. I was pregnant at the time so I didn;t intervene incase she was unstable.

I bet that little girl's parents would have been horrified if they knew she was treated that way.

On a related note is this disturbing anecdote of an overprotective, sword-wielding psycho-mom shared with us by another reader:

I'd like to think that if I saw a child (especially such a young child) being abused, I'd step in. Slapping babies is just not on. However, in the case of that unstable ayi on the plane ... it's tough. You don't really know the dynamics of the relationship, or her mental state. I'd certainly think twice before getting in the way of a sword wielding crazy woman!

Saw a less serious, but similar story on a plane: A stewardess asked a girl if the man sitting next to her was her father. The man's skin was dark and the girl was fairly light-skinned. The father puffed up angrily and retorted, "Yes, I'm her father." I can see why he was offended, but wouldn't you rather the stewardess asked than didn't? If it turned out the guy wasn't her father, then people would wonder why no one noticed and why no one didn't say anything. Guess the stewardess weighed her options and figured offending the guy was worth the ask.

Re: Baby slapping aboard flight sets off debate

Another "on-the-flipside" account: I once witnessed a very spoiled 7 year old boy beat up on what I presume was his grandmother for not buying him a toy from a stand in the park. He was a pretty beefy kid (as you can imagine many "Little Emperors" can be) and his grandmother seemed completely cowed by him, as if no one in the family had ever made any attempt to discipline the boy.

All she could do was repeatedly mutter "Don't cry," "Don't cry" while her grandson repeatedly pummeled her with his fists and kicked her. No one around the scene even batted an eyelash.

thw question on this one: why does the stewardess need to know the relationship between two passengers?

Re: Baby slapping aboard flight sets off debate

as per my story....I think she was worried that the man was not her father, in which case, she was either by herself on a plane or worst case, was being kidnapped.
