Some simple tips to keep your kids safe...
Hi everyone....
Everyone has read the disturbing news about knife attacks in Chinese schools, not to mention back home in the USA and Europe. Here are a few simple tips from Circle of Iron Martial Arts club of Beijing to keep your kids safe!
# 1.) Choose a school with good security! This should be a no-brainer, but it's essential that you choose a school that has a good security system in place. I don't mean a school that has a couple of skinny underpaid teenage Chinese security guards at the gate. They should have an organized security system and locked gates. Parents should show ID and be let in and out by guards and the gate should be locked after parent's ID's are checked. This might seem like overkill and tedious to show ID, but it's important that strangers are not allowed into the school for any reason whatsoever. All school staff should have background checks ideally, but this might not happen in China. It's best if you choose a school that only hires licensed teachers and not just travelers or backpackers. Many schools call themselves international schools, but actually will hire anyone with a Western face without any type of background check. It's not hard for any Western person to get a job as a teacher in Chinese schools and these people are rarely screened so make sure that the school does background checks on all staff. (not that the staff may attack your children, but there may be other problems that I don't need to mention.) Meet and talk to the teachers and staff yourself before choosing a school and make sure they have a good security policy and locked gates.
#2.) Teach kids how to recognize danger---If a stranger shows up at the school and starts yelling or acting strangely, the kids should know where the door is and how to escape. We don't want to scare kids or make them paranoid, but they should know when to get out and where to go for sanctuary should anything bad happen.
#3.) Kids should memorize their address and phone number--another no-brainer, but believe it or not, some kids don't know their mom and dad's phone number. Keep your phone available and on at all times and make sure your child knows the number.
#4.) Don't talk to strangers....we all know this one, but in China its a different culture and kids often talk to strangers here. Once again, don't be paranoid or go overboard with it. The child can be polite and say good morning, but of course we should teach them not to go anywhere with a stranger and to tell mom and dad if anyone makes them feel uncomfortable.
Attacks at school still are very rare and Beijing is a very safe city, especially considering the huge population but we should always be as safe as we can.
If your child is very young, its better to just teach them some simple things about being safe and don't mention anything that might make them afraid. If they are older, you can teach them a bit more. Martial arts classes are a good way to build up fitness and self esteem, but a child won't be able to physically fight a full grown adult so it's best to teach them to escape to a safe haven where they can make a phone call..
If they see a knife or weapon, putting on a backpack with books in it on the front side of their body covering their vital organs will offer a bit of protection and putting obstacles such as their desks and chairs in the way of an attacker might buy some time but it's best to teach them to run fast and get away and they should know where to go for safety.
Circle of Iron Fighting Arts will be donating our time and giving some free safety seminars in schools around Beijing so if you are interested, just let your school know and perhaps we can come and give a free seminar about safety and escaping danger.

Thanks for those tips - unfortunately the school our daughter is at doesn't seem up to snuff. Perhaps you might consider starting here?

Thanks...we will contact them....and we are doing this for free, the post is not an advertisement. I have a new daughter so safety has become something I"m very concerned about.
One of my good friends is a teacher at a very famous international kindergarten here in Beijing. I will not mention the name, but he told me that only a few months ago, an enraged mother came into the kindie with a real sword and threatened to chop a child's head off because he was bullying her son at the school.
My friend witnessed this and the staff got the woman to finally calm down, but never took the sword away or called the police. The school covered up the whole incident and it was never reported to the news. This was a very famous and expensive Montessori school.
I don't want to be sued so I won't mention the name, but appearances can be very deceiving. It seems like a great school and they have some qualified Montessori teachers there, but this wasn't the first incident that was covered up.
Before that, it was rats and mice in the kitchen.....but I think that's better than a mother with a live sword!

That is insane. I take it there were absolutely no charges pressed (not that the police would do anything ...)

Sounds like something that would happen at Eton Kids.

Was the mum local or a foreigner?

ah yes, guanxi in action. I've heard some harrowing tales of overprivileged parents getting away with harassing teachers ... and the schools have a hard time fighting against it because someone's always the offspring of a powerful politician, businessman or diplomat ...

In China, overprotective parents (and I consider myself among their ranks) take it to a whole new level ...

The mum was Chinese...but that doesn't make much difference....I'm just surprised that someone guessed the place that it happened! Wow, I guess people already know about that place...

Holy crap guys...you are talking about Eton Kids? I pulled my kid outta there. I heard about the sword incident too and that's not all. I heard about the "scary lady" from our neighbor's kid and did some checking up on it and they do have several teachers there who admitted to the whole thing but are afraid for their jobs so won't say anything about it. The director is from the Philippines and I guess can't get another job so easily being from there so its understandable why it would be covered up. I personally saw rats twice on the Palm Springs campus. I know about one incident where a teacher dislocated a kids shoulder "by accident"...said she only picked him up and it was a total accident. They were sued but I don't know the outcome. After I checked around, found out they aren't a real Montessori school at all, but only use the name. A few of their teachers are Montessori qualified, but most are not and they aren't a sanctioned school. A former teacher said they had a weird young guy about 27 years old from Canada there who was touching kids inappropriately taking them to the bathroom to "help them" and getting weird with the little ones and that was enough for me. I got my kid out of there. It seemed like a great place at first and I know Eton is so famous in the UK, but that's also a scam..They have nothing to do with and are not affiliated with Eton of the UK at all. They basically stole the name...I found this online too. http://etonkidsbeware.com/
If you can't see that, use a proxy and you can see the whole post. It was back in 2008, but from what I hear, things are worse now even..but they have gotten better at covering things up. It's one of the worst schools in Beijing and not only bad education and outrageous prices, but it's damn dangerous. They don't screen their teachers....Just make up a CV yourself and apply there. They'll hire you on the spot. Make up a fake name and phony resume and you'll have a job the next day. I wish I took some pics of the rats I saw running around. That place should be shut down. When you have rats in the kitchen, women with swords threatening to chop kids up, and kiddie fiddlers posing as teachers, sending your kid there is like playing Russian roulette.

I guess another simple tip to keep your kids safe is to have them stay far away from Eton kids

I guessed it was Eton Kids when you said Montessori, cover up and rats. I do a lot of research about schools for when my son is old enough to go to kindergarten.
I heard so many horror stories about Eton Kids.
