Under the Sink Water Purifiers?
I've been mulling over buying one for a while now, but have been deterred by the cost and my relative ignorance of the subject.
Can anyone offer any insights?
How effectively does it purify water - enough to drink straight from the tap?
Do these things tend to waste a lot of water (as I've been told)
What about domestic brands vs foreign brands - i.e. is there an "IQ Air" of under-the-sink purifiers?

haven't bought one myself, but am strongly considering switching, because bottled water (including the big tongshui bottles) are not necessarily safe to drink from.

Thanks for that - if anyone else has had experience using Aquasana and can share their insight, would be much appreciated

What kind of building do you reside in? Even if I had an IQAir quality water filter, I would not trust the water coming through the pipes of some of these Soviet-era buildings and facilities. No matter what the authorities say, I would not believe that the tap is safe enough.

I live in a relatively new compound in Shuangjing (less than 5 years old), but like you say - who knows what lurks in the pipes ....

Re: Under the Sink Water Purifiers?
I have been using a reverse osmosis under the water filter for 3 years now, and we are very very happy with it.
It is a multi tank unit that goes under the sink, and produces reverse osmosis water which is so pure it is almost like distilled water. He can also provide an on the wall unit that offers instant hot and warm water - this is great for tea, coffee, instant soup and just general drinking. We love that there is no water sitting around in plastic bottles of unknown origin.
I know distilled/R-O water is not the 100% best option as we all do need minerals... but my theory is, with all the crap in Beijing water, I would prefer to have next to nothing in my water!! I feel we get enough minerals from our fruits, vegetables, foods, and in beijing probably the air we breath.
We use it for washing our fruit, veggies, rice; cooking; filling humidifiers... everything!

As for Aquasana, we do use their shower filter, and that has made a difference for all of our skin.

Re: Under the Sink Water Purifiers?
I used have one a couple of years back- consisted of 3 canister filters, a uv filter, a water pump, and a pressure tank. Nice piece of work. The area where I used to live had really hard, impure water. I don't remember the brand, do know it was French though. Worked like a charm. Water coming out of the output faucet is considerably low pressure. The filter membranes needed replacing every couple of months; that's the only maintenance you'll have to do. And also they don't come cheap.
I wouldn't recommend a local brand, at least not the filter membranes. If you want to cut on costs, get the local hardware but opt for EU approved membranes.

Re: Under the Sink Water Purifiers?
Hi,
Can you tell me what is the brand of RO filter that you are using ?
There seem to be several options but no reliable reviews. If you are happy with the one you use, probably I will go with the same as well.
I think the main problem that everyone says with RO filters is the slow speed of water, is that the case ?

Re: Under the Sink Water Purifiers?
The "installed" under the sink kind from Aquasana uses its own tubing after the fitration device.
The "End of the spigot" type routes water from the spigot to the filtration device and then into their special spigot. It's quite a tiny little addition to the end of the water faucet.

We're pleased with our stuff from Aquasana! Charlie Thomson is his name. Scroll to the bottom of the Aquasana page to find his cell phone number. Super guy. TCM doctor, American. Tell him Liora said hi!

Yes, I wasn't kidding. I prefer the taste of Nongfu to others, as long as it isn't the 4L jugs.

Re: Under the Sink Water Purifiers?
Sadly, I suspect that much of the bottled water (in the large jugs) here is fake. Those small neighbourhood "water delivery stations" don't give me a lot of confidence somehow.
I think that investing in a *good* under-sink purification system is the way to go.

Re: Under the Sink Water Purifiers?
And you would rather trust the bottled water here?
Most decent water filtration systems can reduce or eliminate heavy metals. Even a Brita jug can significantly reduce most heavy metals.

Re: Under the Sink Water Purifiers?
Jerry, do let us know what you decide. Maybe I'll follow in your footsteps. It would be interesting to do a cost comparison to delivered water too. I've been thinking about getting Watson's water with the minerals in it.

Sorry for the delay, everyone - we've been procrastinating on this as we finish using off the filters for the Brita jug we have - I'll let you know how it works out when we make the switch.
I did see that my in-laws have installed a local-brand sink filter yesterday (it's a big white cylinder sitting on their countertop) - looks kind of clunky, but may do the trick. I'll get the specs and post later.

Re: Under the Sink Water Purifiers?
This is the filter my in-laws have installed. It's a ceramic countertop Fairey water filter - seems legit. They said they bought it off a CCTV home shopping network program. Check the link for specs.
Taobao seems to have a few models of Fairey filters for sale here, here and here , though I can't vouch for their authenticity.
