Scary article.

Tired, stressed and 'fed up' "Vast numbers of teachers are suffering mental and physical health problems due to the intense pressure heaped on them by students, parents and school officials, education experts have warned. Studies show that potentially thousands of teachers are already at breaking point, while many are quitting the classroom every year."

Good commentary on the article here:

You can never tell, but at least it seems when it comes to class size and student-to-teacher ratio, ours is one of the better ones. My daughter's class has one teacher, one assistant, one PT foreign teacher and one ayi for a class of about 20 kids.

One of the first classes I taught was a class of 70 university students. I only had a chalkboard. No computer, no Power Point, no projector, no interactive whiteboard. Also, the textbook said things like, "American families get broken up by divorce. And those children then turn to drugs." So I couldn't use that either. And if I wanted anything photocopied, I had to ask two weeks in advance. And the desks and chairs could not be moved - they were nailed to the ground, in rows. The classroom was set up for me to lecture and talk at the students for two hours. This was my intro to China.
