Native English speaking daughter asked to represent her Chinese school in English Competition ... your thoughts?
there's an interesting discussion over on thebeijinger.com that I thought would be relevant here ...

here's the initial post:

So, it is nearing the end of the term and time to start sorting out contestents for a perrenial favorite.... The English speaking competition.
Been through this scenario before, but usually our holiday travel makes it a non-issue as we are not here for this special display of Chinese torture.
Summary:
Daughter is native English (and Chinese) speaker.
Goes to total Chinese school.
School wants her to represent in competition.
School is pressuring her to represent.
I feel this is not fair to kids who don't have an American mom at home (i.e. all of them).
(also feel it would be a non-issue if #1 daughter LOOKED like she had an American mom at home, but she does not.)
Daughter old enough to make her own judgement.
Tell horrified teacher this. (a CHILD make a DECISION????I'm MELLLLTTTTINNNNNGG!)
Leave decision up to daughter.
Daughter knows classmates pour tons of effort into preparing, agrees that it is not fair.
Opts out.
School cannot accept. Sends letter home with dates, times, details....chance to bring honor to our great school, ad infinitum.
Teacher recruits other parents to "talk sense into me".
I am extremely annoyed by this, but cannot follow my gut instinct which is to tell the teacher to get bent. After all, my daughter does have to go to school there.
Suggestions?

Hmm, doesn't sound quite right to me, I think go with your instincts and your daughters' choice.

wow, totally agree but can understand poor parents under pressure...u never know how it might come back at them later on if they do refuse....but i would totally go with own decision and my daughter's...it's just me, I always say there is always a choice...do not like to be pressured, makes me do things opposite just on purpose

I think this calls for a sudden trip out of town that just came up and is unavoidable. So sorry, won't be around. Might help everyone save face. Something along those lines.

I would also slyly and subtly hint that if the pressure tactics continued, I may very well just publicize this ploy online.
