Global Times: Masking the Pollution
From the recent article in The Global Times:
Quote:
A Beijing-based American doctor has suggested that residents should wear face masks to guard against the capital's worsening air pollution.
However, both Chinese doctors and environmental protection authorities regard his suggestions as unnecessary scaremongering.
Quote:
"It was only slight pollution, which was not bad enough for people to wear masks," said Du Shaozhong, deputy head of the bureau, who said Saint Cyr's suggestions did "not reflect the real air conditions" in Beijing.
Quote:
"The suggestion to wear masks will make trouble out of nothing, as we've had polluted air for a long time, and we shouldn't be living with an American standard," said an anonymous doctor at the People's Hospital of Peking University, who specializes in respiratory diseases.
Erm... What do you think?

Pollution? In Beijing? No, no, no my friend, that is fog. I know it is fog because taxi drivers keep telling me it is fog. Just fog. Nothing to worry about.

Call me nationalistic, but I'll take "American Standard air" (even of the LA variety) any day.

Re: Global Times: Masking the Pollution
Hi,
I work on a monthly rotation in and out of Beijing to the North Sea, It takes me a week to clear my lungs when I leave and about 2 days to thicken up again when I arrive. I find the Outdoor pollution not so bad, but the indoor air from all the cigarette smoking is horrible, then you have smoke from all the fry cooking. I really have a hard time with it in the restaurants.
Cheers,
David

Maybe a company like IQ Air can make a personal air filter that we can wear on a chain around our necks. Hm, or maybe we should just wear hazmat suits. This October seems to be worse than those of recent years past, but maybe I'm just being nostalgic because I can only see three blocks away out my window due to the recurring Beijing "fog".
