Are Baby Wipes Suitable for use with New Born Babies.?

Research studies from the UK have led to 75% of maternity hospitals changing their practice in relation to products used for newborns. The common practice of cleansing the diaper area with baby wipes is now discouraged for babies under the age of 4 weeks. Many manufacturers of baby wipes advertise their product as being suitable for newborns. Dermatologists in the UK say that the skin of newborns is not able to cope with the strength of the cleansing product in these baby wipes.
Cleansing the diaper area with cotton wool balls and simple warm, water alone are all that is required to maintain the PH of the baby's delicate skin in this area.
After the age of 4 weeks babies skins develop enough to cope with the cleansing products used in the manufacture of baby wipes although many parents choose to continue with plain water and cotton balls.

I never heard anyone say their baby had a problem. No rashes etc.

There seemed to be more rashes like nappy rash before in my opinion.

We held baby #2 and #3 bottom under a sink with warm running water and splashed by hand, patted dry with a cloth set aside for that purpose. First baby I used baby wipes, and yowza yowza she had some problems. We also started cloth diapering when DD1 was 4 months old. Live and learn, poor thing was my test baby for so many things!

This is the Chinese way and also how we do it as well. If the little one is showing signs of "red bum" we'll also finish off with a hairdryer. The only time we really use wipes is when we're not at home.

I'll take this advice under consideration twice! Thanks.

We usually wash baby's bum bum under running water after a poo and we had no problems.

I would suggest having a small bowl with warm water next to your changing area to clean the diaper area.
