WeChat groups are a vital resource for Beijing’s international community, not only providing information, but bringing together people with shared interests. Each week we’ll be highlighting a thriving group chat, so whether you’re new to town or just looking to expand your networks, you can find your people.
We’ve written before about Elvira’s Nuts, the name under which Spaniard Elvira Zaera Tamargo produces her range of cereals and sauces. However, she’s also the admin of Beijing Quality Food, where providers from the capital’s booming artisan produce scene connect up with eager foodies. We asked her to dish about the dishes on offer.
Tell us about yourself, and how you came to be admin of this group.
I came to Beijing three years ago. Soon after I started making granola and other products to sell, and I needed a way to do it, as all the WeChat groups I was in were specific for other things but not for advertising my products. So I decided to open my own group dedicated to home-made and bespoke food producers.
Who’s in the group and what do you talk about?
Mostly customers and vendors, mainly from Beijing but we have some from other cities in China too. Most vendors in the group can post to anywhere in China. We have a little bit of everything: from veggie and poultry locally grown, sausages and pies, to granola, muesli and cocoa pops, from pickles and dry meat to Spanish-style meat produce (embutidos), the best Chinese and flavored mix teas, and of course, desserts, like birthday cakes, cookies, and lemon or maracuyá bars.
Do you meet in real life?
I do sell my stuff in the group and meet many of the customers, but not all, as people get added by other members too. I meet vendors too in the different markets I attend. But as a group, we don’t meet. I have been told, and I thought about it myself too, to organize a market or fair with the vendors in the group. But to organize something like that, well… I need to find a suitable place to house us all, hopefully, next year!
