Beijing pet parents, be alert! International Center for Veterinary Services (ICVS) has asked us to help share an alert to help you keep your pups safe.

Hairy caterpillars are out in force and they pose a serious risk to your furry friends. These insects, often found on trees, bushes, or the ground beneath them, carry tiny, venomous spines that can cause intense pain, swelling, or allergic reactions if touched or stepped on by curious pets.

Recently, several dog owners have reported cases of their dogs with limping, excessive licking of paws, and signs of discomfort or anxiety after going out on walks. Upon veterinary examination, it was determined that these symptoms were likely caused by contact with caterpillars, which are more prevalent during this time of year.

Certain caterpillars, such as hairy or spiny varieties, can cause irritation, allergic reactions, or even mild toxicity if touched or stepped on. Dogs may accidentally come into contact with these caterpillars while exploring grassy or wooded areas, leading to discomfort and potential health issues.

ICVS Recommends:

Avoid walking your dog in areas with known caterpillar infestations.

Keep your dog on a leash and steer them away from grassy or leafy areas and under trees where caterpillars may be present.

After walks, check your dog’s paws, muzzle, and coat for any signs of caterpillars or irritation.

If You Suspect Your Dog Has Stepped on a Caterpillar:

Do not panic: Stay calm and avoid touching the affected area with your bare hands as some caterpillar hairs can cause irritation to humans as well.

Rinse the paw gently: Use cool, running water to flush the affected paw. Avoid rubbing the area as this may embed the hairs deeper.

Prevent licking: Use an E-collar (cone collar) to prevent your dog from licking or chewing the irritated paw, which could worsen the condition.

Seek veterinary care immediately: Contact your veterinarian as soon as possible. Even if the symptoms seem mild, professional evaluation is crucial to prevent complications such as infections or allergic reactions.

Dogs are especially vulnerable during walks or park playdates. Symptoms of contact include:

Limping or refusing to put weight on a paw

Excessive licking or chewing at a specific spot

Whining, agitation, or visible discomfort

If you suspect your pet has encountered a hairy caterpillar, seek veterinary care immediately. Do not attempt to remove spines yourself. Improper handling may worsen the reaction.

Please contact the ICVS with any questions or concerns:

Personality: We are beautiful healthy rabbits and love to play and jump and snuggle. If you love us and care for us we will love you back. It doesn’t take much to win our love!

Background: We had a hard life initially and were left in a small wired-bottom cage outside year-round. We were given food that was not ideal for rabbits, living on a diet of cabbage, bread and corn. One day a couple living near us decided to take us in and take care of us, but they knew that they couldn’t keep us for long as they were students and would be returning to their home country soon. We have been living with them for 6 months and have had lots of timothy hay and fresh vegetables to eat. We are now healthy and happy and very loving bunnies. We hope to find our new family as soon as possible and will provide many more years of love and companionship!

Ideal home: Even though our current owners love us so much, unfortunately, their lives are extremely busy and they will leave China in the near future. We are very friendly house rabbits and would be happy with an individual, a couple or a family with older children (8 years and older).

Breed, Sex & Age: Fraze is a young male rabbit, with black and white short hair and about 1-1.5 years old. Cherry is an all-white young female rabbit of about 1-1.5 years, and has beautiful short white fur.

Medical notes: We are both now healthy and happy, and Cherry was already spayed at ICVS soon after we were adopted. Fraze is also ready for his neuter surgery!

Post-adoption care: The International Center for Veterinary Services (ICVS) has enrolled us into their Rescued/Stray/Rehomed Pet Adoption Benefits Program. ICVS will provide our new families with significant discounts (up to 50%) on health examinations and neuter/spay surgeries during the rabbits’ first year with their new adoption families.

Annual Wellness Packages: ICVS has wonderful wellness packages to keep the rabbits healthy and free of worms, fleas and ticks. Please contact ICVS for more information.

Pet Import/Export Counseling: ICVS will provide adoption families with unlimited relocation counseling and accurate information to take pets with them when it is time to move to another city or country.

Door-to-Door Pet Transport Service: ICVS can also help new families arrange door-to-door car transport for their appointments at the hospital.

Background:
We are looking for a new home for Bunny whom we rescued, literally off the streets, quite some time ago. It was 8 years ago that we found this nearly full grown grey bunny hopping along the sidewalk in a Shunyi housing compound. We searched and searched for his owners, but they never came forward. We guess that they bought him when he was a cute little baby, but tired of him and the responsibility of caring for him once he grew into an adult. He was (and is) one of the most beautiful bunnies we have ever seen. We’d like to take him with us when we move, but rabbits are so fragile and this guy is getting old.
We are hoping to find a family to love and spoil our bunny as much as we have. He comes with a large hutch (which is functional, but does need some repairs), and a good supply of hay, which is critical to the good health of any rabbit.

Personality: Bunny is very friendly and good with older kids. He does not like to be held, but loves to be petted. He’s used to living in a hutch outdoors and is litter box trained in his hutch. He’s never lived inside, but the owners think he would adapt easily and welcome a break from Beijing pollution and severe winters.

Ideal home: Bunny would be fine for families with older children (e.g., 8 years and older). Having a rabbit is a wonderful way for children to learn how to interact with an animal while respecting nature under the supervision of their parents.

Breed, Sex & Age: Bunny is at least 8-years old and is a short-haired grey rabbit.

Medical notes: Bunny is an unneutered male and in good health.

Post-adoption care: The International Center for Veterinary Services (ICVS) has enrolled Bunny into their Rescued/Stray/Rehomed Pet Adoption Benefits Program.
