Former Beijing resident and beijingkids board member Jacqueline Cohen lives in South Lantau, Hong Kong with her husband and her son and daughter. You can check out her blog at sassymamahk.com and her tweets @lantaumama. This article was reposted with her permission and can be found here.

If you happen to be in Lantau Hong Kong one day, you don’t know how to enjoy your “Lantau day” to the maximum. So here is the perfect guide for you.

Fact – All kids love various forms of transportation.
Fact – All kids love the beach
Fact – Lantau is the perfect day out with kids!

Get the cable car from Tung Chung to Ngong Ping first thing in the morning. If you go early, there is no wait in line, and you can often get a cable car all to yourself. The staff are great at helping the kids in and helping if you have a pram. The ride is great fun and the vents at the top of each cable car make for natural air conditioning. For the brave of heart, try the new Crystal Cabins with a see-through floor (eeek!)

[Hint – We always stop at Taste’s bakery in CityGate at Tung Chung MTR to pick up some snacks for the cable car ride!]

Ngong Ping 360 Standard Cable Cars cost $80 per adult and $41 per child (aged 3-11) for a single trip; $115 per adult and $58 per child for a round trip. Crystal Cabins cost $118 per adult and $79 per child for a single trip, $169 per adult and $112 per child for a round trip. Numerous packages, including attractions at Ngong Ping Village are also available – check all the details here.

I am excited because I finally found an iphone application I actually would use with my kids. The International Children’s Digital Library has released a StoryKit application that allows you to create books on your iphone. It is free, easy to use, and allows you to upload photos, draw pictures, add text and record voice.

Despite the fact that I don’t even have an iphone, I now envisage buying one and taking photos from recent trips and turning them into talking photo albums with the kids. Maybe make a short story for my children, Natty and Sassy, about their lives so far. They can even help create their own stories, choosing the photos and doing the voice over themselves.

Of course, this doesn’t include what a more creative parent could do – scanning in existing favorite books, drawing your own graphics, using photos form the web, telling stories in funny voices … the possibilities are endless! You can share your stories with other iphone users of your choice, such as family and friends overseas, how about a StoryKit book for grandma on her birthday?

Also worth checking out is theICDL itself, an online digital library of children’s books in multiple languages, including English, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Hebrew, Farsi, Croatian, Greek, Mongolian, and more. Some are classics and others are new stories.

So, get out and get reading!
