What’s your name, and give us the Elevator Pitch about your job.

My name is Ellie.

By day, I teach high school IB Economics and IB Spanish, and I’m the Head of Grade 9 at an international school. In my Economics classes, I encourage students to be ethical consumers and consider how their decisions impact themselves and our communities. With my Spanish students, I encourage them to connect with cultures that are different than their own, which helps them see the world through a different lens. I also manage a team of 18 teachers and provide guidance and behavior support to 106 9th-grade students.

By night, I manage an animal rescue organization and dedicate my free time to saving animals, getting them medical treatment, finding them forever homes, and empowering first-time rescuers to save stray animals.

I find that there are common threads between my teaching and rescuing: identifying problems and brainstorming solutions, being reflective about what’s going well and what could be done better, thinking about how our actions affect others, and the importance of playing an active role in our community.

Could you walk me through a typical day or week in your role? What are your primary responsibilities?

5:45am I wake up and walk my dogs through the hutongs, feed the dogs and cats, and clean their litterboxes

6:50am Leave for work

7:40am Start work (Fulfill Head of G9 duties + Teach various Spanish or Economics lessons based on the day)

10:30am Breaktime: Check in with fosters in their foster animals’ Wechat group to ask for content to use for social media, address any potential problems that might arise (i.e. New nervous foster dog chewed up a pillow while at work, a foster cat has no appetite and has been lethargic, a foster will be going on holiday soon, etc)

12:00pm Lunchtime: Eat + Respond to more WeChat messages and provide guidance to people who have found a stray animal outside

1:00-3:45pm Finish various Economics and Spanish lessons + handle any issues 9th-grade students or teachers may encounter

4:00pm Head home to walk the dogs, feed my dogs and cats, clean litterboxes

5:00pm Take a new rescue animal to the vet for a general health check or vaccinations

6:00pm Conduct interview phone calls for prospective fosters or adopters, Reach out to a local restaurant/bar to host our upcoming adoption event, Consult our team of trusted vets regarding symptoms a foster animal is experiencing

7:00pm Post Adoption posters on WeChat Moments and in our network group

7:30pm Send a list of adopted animals to our sponsor (Bauer’s Pet Cuisine), so they can send a congratulatory treat box full of products

8pm Create social media video content for our WeChat channel and Instagram, update adoption posters on Canva

What is the most rewarding or fulfilling part of your work? What problems do you get to solve? On the flip side, what are the most significant challenges or stressful aspects of your job?

The most fulfilling part is looking at a photo of an animal when they were initially rescued (usually sick, dirty, and afraid) and seeing the glow up they’ve experienced now that they’re in a safe foster home or adoptive home. They usually look like a completely different animal.

Some of our problems are on the smaller side, and some are on the more serious side:

Smaller problems we encounter regularly: A foster gives us very short notice that they cannot foster, so we need to quickly find somewhere for that animal to go. A foster dog is experiencing separation anxiety, and neighbors are complaining about barking. We rescue a feral cat in the middle of winter and have to make the decision to neuter and return them to the same community.

A few of the more stressful situations we’ve experienced: We had a foster animal go missing. We tirelessly looked for her, disseminated her poster, and offered a reward. She was luckily found by another local rescuer, but they refused to return her to us. We’ve had foster animals or adopted animals die in tragic ways. We had a newly rescued dog nip at a foster’s ayi, and she escalated the situation and got police involved, so we had to navigate that.

December 6, Furry Tales Charity Gala at the Regent, where we celebrated our 4 year anniversary and rescuing 318 animals

How did you get to where you are today? You can talk about your educational route, pivotal moments, unplanned detours, and any other decisions that you find important.

I was always interested in American politics and World Affairs, so when I found out about the International Relations major at St. Catherine University, which consists of history, economics, and political science courses, and also required me to study abroad and study a language, I found the perfect fit.

I spent my junior year in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and thoroughly immersed myself in the language, took tango classes, and ate my weight in empanadas and dulce de leche. I intended to return to South America after I graduated, but as I was finishing up my senior year, I enrolled in an East Asian History course and became fascinated with what I was studying. My professor recommended an opportunity to become a teaching assistant for students studying International Relations at a university in Zhuhai, China, so I took it, and that started my journey in China.

Me in 2016 with my Chinese language teachers in Zhuhai during my internship

Growing up, my mom was very active in our community, which inspired me to get involved in middle and high school in the Student Council, organizing volunteer opportunities for myself and other students. We served breakfasts at a homeless shelter on weekends, collected toiletries and socks for women and children’s shelters, tutored students from inner city schools, and hosted baking classes at a nursing home. From those experiences, I saw how meaningful it was to try to make other peoples’ lives better, even if it was in a small way, and I know that’s what pushed me to start rescuing animals in Beijing.

I have found that my experience studying at a liberal arts university prepared me so well to teach at an IB school, because we encourage students to be globally minded, reflective, caring, principled, risk-taking, open-minded, balanced, etc. I hope to inspire my students inside the classroom with my academic lessons, but more importantly, through my own actions outside of school when it comes to community involvement. We all possess the ability to make the world a better place for every living creature – big or small.

Knowing what you know now, if you could go back and give one piece of advice to your teenage self about work and life, what would it be?

Many of my students are currently overwhelmed by college applications and familial, cultural, and general teenage pressures. I would tell my students, based on my own experiences, that if something does not work out – you don’t get into your dream college or you don’t achieve the IB score you were after – that opportunity was not meant for you, and life continues. There is always something better that awaits you. You are allowed to feel sad and disappointed, but the most important thing is to keep moving forward.

The holiday season should be about more than getting everything on your wish list. It’s the perfect time to give back to the community and those in need. We spoke with Ola about the annual Santa Food Drive, a heartwarming initiative born from a simple desire to channel the community’s kindness into tangible support for the city’s stray dogs in need. What began as a small rescue effort among friends has blossomed into a crucial campaign, providing tons of food, warm shelters, and vital supplies to overcrowded and underfunded sanctuaries.

Read on to learn about the inspiring shelters they support, the profound impact of every donation and how you can help spread comfort and joy to hundreds of dogs in need this season.

Tell us about yourself, your annual Santa Food drive and how it started.

First, I am very thankful to jingkids for giving me this opportunity to introduce our Christmas animal charity.

My name is Ola, and over the years, partnering with two like-minded friends Polly and Mariana, we’ve cared for countless animals together as “Layers of Love” and met so many kind people who offered help in all kinds of ways.

As our rescue circle expanded, we sought to create more opportunities for others to join in. That’s how the annual Santa Food Drive began. Thanks to generous donations at Christmas and even on Valentine’s Day, we’ve been able to buy wooden houses, heaters, mattresses and several tons of food for local shelters. There are so many shelters out there – overcrowded, underfunded and often forgotten. Every bit of support truly makes a difference.

Is there a particular dog’s story or a shelter’s situation that personally inspired you to help?

Every day, every shelter struggles with the same challenge of how to feed all its permanent residents. We know that there is a way to help, to take action.

Which shelters is the money going toward helping?

I’m honored to introduce four shelters that will benefit this Christmas. Zhong Xiaosong’s shelter cares for over 340 dogs, including many that are old, sick or disabled. Miss Weili’s shelter houses nearly 500 animals, including dogs, ducks, cats, goats and chickens. Rose Garden has faced multiple relocations, carries huge debts and cares for 270 animals. Finally, Miss Fang’s shelter in Langfang continuously rescues dogs from meat trucks.

Where did all these dogs come from?

Honestly, it might be easier to say where they didn’t come from! The hardest part is that most of these dogs are incredibly friendly and loving toward people. They would make amazing pets despite some of their difficult pasts. Adopt, don’t shop!

What’s the fundraising goal, and how did you come up with this amount?

This year, we’re aiming to raise RMB 30,000, which will provide 3 tons of nutritious dog food directly from the factory. But if anyone feels inspired to donate any other food, old bedding, toys or other pet supplies, they’re more than welcome to join us by scanning the code to enter our group. Any help will be very appreciated.

What’s the plan to ensure transparency on how every donation is collected and distributed?

For the past three years, we’ve maintained a dedicated group where I provide daily updates on every transaction during our Christmas charity events, including purchase receipts, delivery details and other information to ensure full transparency.

Now, please tell us the steps on how we can help these pups in need.

Join our group or scan the code on the poster to share the festive spirit with those who need us the most.

We all know Taobao is a treasure trove. You can find anything from a vintage-style dress to a year’s supply of spicy noodles or a life-sized animatronic dinosaur (really). But sometimes, you stumble across something that isn’t just a product but an experience. Our latest purchase fell squarely into that category: a box of six butterfly cocoons.

Yes, you read that right. Amid the countless listings for clothes, gadgets and home goods, there exists a niche world of nature vendors selling the promise of metamorphosis. On a whim, and in a bid for a unique activity, I clicked “buy now.” A few days later, a small, carefully packaged box arrived, holding what looked like six little dried-up pistachios.

What followed was one of the most fascinating at-home, play-based learning experiences we’ve ever had. The first step was a family project: building a habitat. The kit came with the tools we needed to build a case and sticks to build a place to safely house our new cocoons.

Then came the waiting and the caring. The anticipation was a lesson in patience all on its own. And then, one day, it happened. One night, after dinner, while no one was paying any attention to them, one butterfly emerged. We watched, utterly mesmerized, as it patiently pumped fluid into its wings, transforming them from wrinkled paper into vibrant, sturdy sails.

The real magic, however, wasn’t just in the hatching. It was in the questions.

“Why are they so wobbly when they come out?”
“How do they know how to be a butterfly inside the cocoon?”
“Where did they get their beautiful colors?”
“How often do they eat?”
“Are they attacking each other?”
“Do they remember being a caterpillar?”
“Is that butterfly poop?”

I’ll admit, I was stumped. My daughter’s curiosity went far beyond my basic elementary school knowledge of the butterfly life cycle. Together, we dove into research. I was learning right alongside her, fascinated by the complex biology I’d never stopped to consider. She wasn’t just memorizing facts; she was engaging in genuine scientific inquiry, driven by a direct, emotional connection to the creatures in our makeshift habitat.

The next day, the rest of the group emerged, and we brought the habitat to her school to share the magic with her class. Then, as we had already discussed, we set the butterflies free so that they could live out their butterfly lives in the wild. We watched as they took off, a little unsteady at first, and then soared on the breeze. It was a powerful, quiet moment of letting go and celebrating the cycle of life.

Taobao is famous for its strange and wonderful items, from the practical to the bizarre.

Beijing pet parents, be alert! International Center for Veterinary Services (ICVS) has asked us to help share an alert to help you keep your pups safe.

Hairy caterpillars are out in force and they pose a serious risk to your furry friends. These insects, often found on trees, bushes, or the ground beneath them, carry tiny, venomous spines that can cause intense pain, swelling, or allergic reactions if touched or stepped on by curious pets.

Recently, several dog owners have reported cases of their dogs with limping, excessive licking of paws, and signs of discomfort or anxiety after going out on walks. Upon veterinary examination, it was determined that these symptoms were likely caused by contact with caterpillars, which are more prevalent during this time of year.

Certain caterpillars, such as hairy or spiny varieties, can cause irritation, allergic reactions, or even mild toxicity if touched or stepped on. Dogs may accidentally come into contact with these caterpillars while exploring grassy or wooded areas, leading to discomfort and potential health issues.

ICVS Recommends:

Avoid walking your dog in areas with known caterpillar infestations.

Keep your dog on a leash and steer them away from grassy or leafy areas and under trees where caterpillars may be present.

After walks, check your dog’s paws, muzzle, and coat for any signs of caterpillars or irritation.

If You Suspect Your Dog Has Stepped on a Caterpillar:

Do not panic: Stay calm and avoid touching the affected area with your bare hands as some caterpillar hairs can cause irritation to humans as well.

Rinse the paw gently: Use cool, running water to flush the affected paw. Avoid rubbing the area as this may embed the hairs deeper.

Prevent licking: Use an E-collar (cone collar) to prevent your dog from licking or chewing the irritated paw, which could worsen the condition.

Seek veterinary care immediately: Contact your veterinarian as soon as possible. Even if the symptoms seem mild, professional evaluation is crucial to prevent complications such as infections or allergic reactions.

Dogs are especially vulnerable during walks or park playdates. Symptoms of contact include:

Limping or refusing to put weight on a paw

Excessive licking or chewing at a specific spot

Whining, agitation, or visible discomfort

If you suspect your pet has encountered a hairy caterpillar, seek veterinary care immediately. Do not attempt to remove spines yourself. Improper handling may worsen the reaction.

Please contact the ICVS with any questions or concerns:

Pets are big business in China.

China’s growing obsession with pets has finally led to the nation’s first pet undergrad major. Beijing Agricultural University’s newest pet science and management major provides a well-rounded curriculum that covers essential topics such as pet nutrition and dietetics, where students learn to formulate balanced diets tailored to different breeds and life stages. The program also delves into animal behavior and training, teaching future professionals how to address common behavioral issues and strengthen the bond between pets and their owners.

Students gain foundational knowledge in veterinary care, focusing on preventive health measures, common illnesses and emergency first aid. For those interested in the business side of the industry, courses in pet entrepreneurship and management offer insights into running pet-related ventures, from grooming salons to pet tech startups. Ethical considerations, including pet welfare and responsible ownership, are also emphasized to ensure graduates uphold high standards in animal care.

In China, the pet industry is now worth approximately RMB 300 billion, making it clear that more and more families are treating pets like actual family.

Living abroad in Beijing can be an exciting adventure, but for animal lovers, the longing for a furry companion can be strong. However, the idea of a lifetime commitment to a pet might be daunting, especially with an uncertain future. This is where Furry Tales‘ foster program comes in.

Elizabeth “Ellie” Rodewald first arrived in China in 2016 to complete a two-year internship in the sunny city of Zhuhai. Little did she know then that a few years later, she’d be running an organization with a heart, with no other goal but to help stray animals living on the streets of Beijing.

Furry Tales’ foster program lets those who want to experience the joys of having a pet without the long – term responsibility. When you foster a pet through this program, you are providing a temporary, loving home for an animal in need. These animals are rescued from the streets and by opening your home to them, you are giving them a chance to thrive before finding their fur-ever home.

One of the significant advantages of fostering is that it helps the animals adjust and get better trained. In a foster home environment, pets can learn basic obedience, socialize with humans and other animals, and become more confident. This training and socialization are crucial for their future lives with their forever families. When the time comes for them to be adopted, these well-adjusted pets are more likely to integrate smoothly into their new homes.

For you as a foster parent in Beijing, it’s a win-win situation. You get to enjoy the companionship of a pet without the worry of what will happen when you have to leave. You can provide love, care, and attention to an animal that may not have had these before. The bond you form with the foster pet can be incredibly rewarding, knowing that you are making a positive impact on their life.

Scan the QR code to get in touch with Ellie to find out which animals need a foster hone So, if you have the space in your heart and home, be part of this amazing journey of helping animals find their forever homes.

If you’d like to donate to furry tales so that they can continue to help animals in need, scan the QR code below.

School’s out, summer’s here and there’s no better time to grow your family than by welcoming in a new furry addition. This Saturday (Jun 22) from 6pm to 8pm, PawsLove will be hosting a free pet adoption event at Beijing Riviera.

PawsLove was founded on Apr 30, 2024, by Yan after she joined a public welfare animal rescue organization called You Me It and adopted a rescued puppy. Since then, she and many volunteers have been involved in adoption, fundraising for shelters, and regularly organizing weekend adoption activities at Beijing Riviera.

Rescuing animals is not enough for Yan. She’s passionate not only about rescuing and relocating animals but also about raising awareness of proper animal training and ownership. PawsLove continues to work with adopters through training courses after the adoption process to ensure that the animals and their owners are in good hands.

The core value of PawsLove is to promote human-pet harmony; not only helping dogs find their forever homes but also supporting adopters through “The New Guide for Dogs to the Family,” “Good Dog Training Camp,” and new puppy supporting teams, so that pets and their human families can live happily ever after.

At the community level, PawsLove advocates that dog handlers, including owners, aunties, and drivers, have the responsibility to manage their pets’ behavior and comply with certain etiquette rules.

In addition to companionship with pet families, Yan also organizes “Read2Paws” activities. By enabling therapy dogs to interact with children or adults in need, these activities can alleviate psychological pressure and encourage children to participate in independent reading activities.

In order to reduce dog biting incidents, the “Dog Detective” course was introduced to the community. This is a highly interactive and free course for primary school students aimed at helping children understand dog body language and learn safe skills for interacting with dogs.

This privately funded organization organizes weekly pet adoption fairs at Beijing Riviera where they welcome animals rescued by shelters and individual volunteers to attend in an attempt to find them loving homes. Children and families are encouraged to volunteer at these events. It is not just the adoption that saves the lives of the animals, but the action of volunteering that also makes an impact on people around us and the community.

PawsLove’s adoption events are a great place for prospective pet owners to meet their future furry best friend. The adoption process is straightforward. After you’ve found the dog or cat the you feel a connection with, you’ll then fill in your digital adoption agreement. The rescuers will then bring the cat or dog to your home to conduct a first home visit, making sure that the animal will be in good hands. After the adoption agreement is signed, you’ll officially become the owner of your new fur baby.

This week’s adoption event is their last one before the summer holiday. Make your way out to Beijing Riviera to meet some adorable animals in need of homes, browse through beautiful artworks at the charity sale, and hopefully meet someone who’ll make your family in Beijing a little bigger.

For those who aren’t ready to make the permanent commitment to owning a pet, PawsLove is also looking for foster families to provide temporary loving homes to these pets until they’re able to find their forever one.

Compassion and a genuine love for animals was the main reason for Ellie and Sorcha Moore-Smith partnering up and launching Furry Tales in December of 2021. “The name is actually a spin-off of ‘fairy tales’, since our goal is to provide our animals with storybook endings,” says Ellie. “We’ve rescued a total of 249 animals around China so far.”

Ellie says she can’t pick her favorite out of these 249 cats and dogs, but the rescue she’s most attached to is Ripley.

Ellie and Ripley

“Ripley was found abandoned outside an apartment. [He was] most likely a pet, but he was discarded after some type of abuse. He now suffers from head shakes and severe incontinence, so he must wear a diaper.”

Furry Tales has no physical address; it’s run from the homes of good people of Beijing. Ellie says: “We do not have a shelter, as securing land and a facility would be expensive and would probably end up being reported by community members if many dogs living together bark, so instead we rely on fosters around the city to care for our animals. This way, it also prepares the animals for living in a home with children, and adults young and old with working schedules, etc.”

Other than not having a physical location to run the business from, Furry Tales also completely relies on Ellie, Sorcha and their volunteers to get the work done. “We have a few volunteers who help us take photos at events, plan fundraisers and design and sell merchandise for us, but it’s mainly Sorcha and I operating things on a day-to-day basis,” says Ellie.

To raise money for their animal rescue, and to be able to pay veterinary bills, Ellie and Sorcha often team up with local vendors and host fundraisers throughout Beijing.

“We’ve had quiz night crossovers with Beijing bars, [and]two adoption events at Plan B. We’ve held a Halloween party at Side Street (Jiudaokou) and our annual anniversary party at The Local. Peach has also hosted Sip ‘n’ Paint events for us as well,” continues Ellie.

Quiz night at The Local

Students from international and bilingual schools have also shown their support to the cause and stepped up by hosting fundraisers selling chocolate, as well as organizing a 5k charity walk – and all of their donations go toward the animals’ veterinary bills.

A charity walk for Furry Tales

Ellie and Sorcha also organize an annual “Doga” event, a super fun way to spend a morning doing yoga with your special furry friend. There are ten spots available, and according to Ellie: “Yoga experience is not required for human or dog.”

Other than finding ways to raise enough money, running an animal rescue organization brings other challenges as well. “The most difficult aspect of running an animal rescue organization is people who message us after finding an animal outside and expect us to immediately drop everything to go get the animal. Sorcha and I have full-time jobs, families, our own animals, hobbies, etc., so we hope to use our platform and experience to provide advice for first-time rescuers and also give them the confidence and knowledge to help the animal themselves.”

To help others understand the process better, Ellie even created a step-by-step guide to assist people when they find an animal outside. “We all can play a part in animal rescue. We are not like a government-funded organization back home; we are volunteers ourselves and other rescuers are swamped with animals, so it’s really helpful when community members step up to the plate to help in any way they can (i.e. taking [the animals]off the street and out of harm’s way, bringing them to the vet, providing them with treatment, finding a foster etc).”

“Our goal is to educate the public about the “Adopt, Don’t Shop” movement, which encourages people to put breeders with unethical practices out of business by refusing to buy pets from them. We also hope that we can inspire people to stop when they see a stray animal and try to help in any way they can – provide it with cold weather shelter to protect it from the elements, set out food and water bowls, try to trap/catch it in order to spay/neuter, and then prepare for adoption if friendly.”

Furry Tales is currently looking for summer fosters, so if you’re staying in Beijing, show your empathy and kindness by temporarily taking care of one of the cuties from the poster below. It won’t cost you a dime, and you’ll get all the assistance you need: supplies, WeChat support, training tips and medical care reimbursement. If you’re interested in becoming a foster to Cider, Dumpling, Pedro, Floki, Rusty, Cheddar, Stacy or Bo, scan the QR code on the poster.

There is also a fun upcoming event in Beijing with all proceeds going to Furry Tales, so don’t miss out on your chance to help our furry friends find their forever homes.

The Furry Tales Christmas Coloring Contest could not have come at a better time this year as the snow falls over Beijing leading to the first official city-wide closure of schools that started on Dec 13 and extended to today. While the kids cheer and you start scratching your head over how to keep them entertained without sitting in front of the TV or iPad too much, consider taking part in local animal charity Furry Tales’ Christmas Coloring Competition!

Simply scan the QR code in the poster and pay the RMB 20 entry fee to Furry Tales co-founder Sorcha. You’ll then receive two pictures from her. Of the two, your child can choose their favorite and color that one, then snap a photo of it and and submit it to Sorcha by Dec 20. Submissions will be judged by age group: 4-7 years old, 8-10 years old, 11-16 years old, and two prizes will be awarded per age group. The prizes include Furry Tales swag such as coloring books, Christmas stockings and a personalized Christmas card from one of their rescues. Only one entry is allowed per child. All entry fees will be used to defray Furry Tales’ operational costs.

With winter bearing down on Beijing, the animal rescue group has more need of donations than ever. They are currently supporting 29 animals, and the funds go straight towards the medical cost of vaccinations, spaying/neutering, blood tests, etc. Furry Tales also has four “bigger” dogs in boarding, which need to go outside of China. If there are remaining donations after all the necessary costs, “I’d love to get some toys for them to play with, and maybe some winter gear,” says Sorcha.

Having aided 200 animals since the group’s inception two years ago, Furry Tales is celebrating with an anniversary party this Sat, Dec 16, at 7pm. The event calls for cocktail attire and will offer appetizers and a buffet. There will also be a silent auction with a long list of amazing prizes ranging from a Fork Set Meal for two (worth RMB 1,888) to a Kocoon Spa voucher (RMB 680) to Diddy’s Hood Home training session (worth RMB 600). There are still a few seats left so scan the QR code to secure a spot now!
