Hanzlik played for the Seattle SuperSonics and the Denver Nuggets from 1980 to 1990. He was a defensive specialist and was selected to the NBA All-Defense Second Team in 1986. Hanzlik is also the CEO of Gold Crown Foundation, a sports foundation whose mission statement is educating youths through sports and enrichment programs – “Preparing kids for the game of life.”

Hanzlik’s talk will cover a variety of topics, including:

His journey to the NBA

His experiences as a player and coach

The challenges and rewards of playing professional basketball

The importance of sportsmanship and teamwork

This is a unique opportunity to hear from a former NBA player and coach.

Don’t miss out on this chance to learn from one of the best. The event is open to the community at large but space is limited, so book your spot as early as possible.

Tickets are RMB 50 per person and all the proceeds from the event will be given to BSB Shunyi’s Year 12 students’ Tanzania Charity Fund.

The Tanzania Charity Fund is a project undertaken with a charity called SeeWay (www.swtz.org), which provides a range of community projects in Tanzania. As part of their IB CAS trip, the Y12 students spend eight days in Tanzania working on a range of different community projects to develop their outdoor skills, learn about the local infrastructure, give back to the community, and spot some wildlife along the way. Sound pretty cool? We think so too! Check out the students’ trip from 2019.

Got a little one at home and hoping that they will socialize with others their own age? I know that organizing plate dates time after time can get exhausting. Everyone’s got a different schedule, and meeting other parents with kids of a similar age is no small task. That’s why I always recommend that you find yourself some regular meetups to make life easier on yourself.

The British School of Beijing Sanlitun and Shunyi organizes weekly toddler meetups that are free and open to parents, whether you’re planning on attending their school or not. These Baby Groups are open to kids aged 0-3, and are a great way for babies to start socializing in a safe environment and for new parents to socialize and ask questions in a safe and educated environment.

There are a few rules though: 1) They organize these events to help foster bonds between parent and child, so you’re not allowed to send ayi to attend in your place, 2) Since the schools can only accept foreign passport holders, the events are only open to those with foreign passports.

Here’s what you can expect when you attend one of BSB’s playdates.

An Early Years teacher welcomes everyone and leads the kids in a friendly warmup with songs, games, and crafts. Then kids get to play with age-appropriate toys and enjoy the company of others their own age while parents spend the time bonding with their kids and socializing with other parents while enjoying snacks and drinks.

Since space is limited, we highly recommend that you book your spot in advance.

Real learning happens all the time, inside and outside of the classroom. Thus, what a school offers in terms of co-curricular activities or extra curricular activities after the school bell rings for the last time in a day, should be taken into consideration as much as its curriculum. But with such a plethora of after school activities available these days, which ones should we pick? Two international schools choose one of their after-school programs to talk about at length, to elucidate us on its benefits.

Director of Activities Simon Parker and Aquatics Director Nic Wilson at the International School of Beijing (ISB) spill the deal on their Swim program.

Tell us about the Swim program and what makes it attractive for students to join.

The ISB Swim program offers each student an opportunity to learn swimming, water safety and other aquatics disciplines in physical education classes.

As well as our curriculum offerings, the after-school swimming program provides opportunities for swimmers to develop further, with early years ‘Learn to Swim’ offerings as part of the ASA program, as well as development and competitive offerings, both regionally and internationally, in our year-round ISB Swim Academy. There are also seasonal swim opportunities for Elementary School (Season 1), Middle School (Season 3) and High School (Season 2), with the jewel in the crown for the High School swim team being the APAC Championships each year.

The swimming program fosters a caring and supportive environment. Students feel comfortable in specially designed programs that are differentiated, not only to motivate excellence, but also to allow all students to reach goals and their full unique potential.

How would you describe and rate ISB’s facilities and teaching support for swimming?

ISB has a world class swimming facility, which has been designed to allow for its diverse aquatic offerings, and fully supports all aspects of the program, from early years swimming to the hosting of major international swim meets.

Our dedicated Aquatics department, consisting of our Aquatics Director and 4 full-time swimming instructors, offers professional coaching and instruction to our ISB community. The collective international teaching and coaching experience of this group allows us to support and guide our swimmers in all areas of their swimming experience, whether a beginner or an elite performer.

What awards or certifications has this program and its students received over the years?

It is important to emphasize that accolades and awards are not the focus of any of the sporting programs at the school, and all participation at any level is centered around the core ideals of “Commitment, Respect and Fun.” We strongly believe that when we do these things well, all our Dragons will experience success, in one way or another.

Over recent years, our ISB swimmers have shared some very special achievements, either individually, or as part of the larger team group:

• In the 2018-19 academic year, based on meet results and times across the year, ISB was declared the #1 International School Swim Team in the world, by the International School Aquatics association.

• Over the COVID Pandemic period ISB was instrumental in developing a unique virtual swimming competition opportunity (Global Virtual All Stars), where swim programs from around the world competed in their own pools, with results being combined to achieve overall standings. ISB ended up as the winners in this global showpiece, that brought together more than 30 schools from around the world.

• The ISB HS Swim Team has won an unprecedented 18 APAC (Asia Pacific Athletic Conference) titles since the competition began.

British School of Beijing (BSB) Shunyi has chosen the Eco-Committee Co-Curricular Activity (CCA) which is overseen by Assistant Head of Primary Emma Brown and Year 6 teacher Anna Warman.

Tell us about the Eco-Committee co-curricular program and what makes it attractive for students to join.

The British School of Beijing (BSB) Shunyi’s Eco-Committee is made up of a group of dedicated students that work on making our school more environmentally friendly. Each year students complete a rigorous application, showing their passion and dedication to the environment. These students then work incredibly hard putting changes in place, running events and educating students (and staff!) about important issues. Students love being part of the Eco-Committee because they can make a real difference – both to our school, our community and the environment. As the future leaders of our planet, it is important that students are well-educated on these issues so they can work hard to make our planet a better place.

How would you describe BSB Shunyi’s facilities and teaching support for the Eco-Committee?

The Eco-Committee has been running for many years and is a strong force for change in our school. The student leaders play a huge role in making changes at BSB, for example they installed bird feeders around campus after conducting an audit on our biodiversity. They also ran many fund-raising days using the proceeds to support charities, and recently also purchased plants for our classrooms to ensure our facilities are as environmentally friendly as possible.

Our teachers are also very supportive, running other co-curricular programmes such as ‘Roots and Shoots’ and ‘Green-fingers Club’ that support and continue the work of the Eco-Committee. Our Chef and Food Committee are also highly supportive, implementing ‘Meat-free Mondays’ and reducing single-use plastic in our canteen. One of our popular Eco-Committee events in the canteen is the House Food Waste Competitions with all Houses competing to see who can waste the least food and what we can do to reduce food waste – an important lesson for everyone about how much food is thrown away each day.

What accomplishments has the Eco-Committee achieved?

BSB wants our students to be empowered to make a difference in their local communities and globally. Our partnership with UNICEF helps us do this by developing learning materials based on the UN’s 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that allow students to think practically about how to effect real change in ongoing projects.

We are proud to support CNN’s Call to Earth Day, a global event that joins forces with schools and organisations across the world to raise awareness of environmental issues and conservation education. The biggest event in our calendar is Earth Week, with the whole school spending the week celebrating our planet and learning about important environmental issues. The Eco-Committee ran assemblies for every year group that were fun and interactive. They also led activities and workshops throughout the week, such as planting new trees and plants in our garden, making recycled art and carrying out environmental audits. Other fun activities included dressing in green to raise money for environmental charities, having lessons outdoors and having parts of the week that were completely electricity free. We’re already excited about Earth Week 2023!

We’re happy living our best lives in what can now be called the “post-Covid” days, and with summer right around the corner, this means outdoor events are back on!

Before Covid put a stop to our social lives, The British School of Beijing, Shunyi would host their annual Summer Fayre on campus. It’s a day of outdoor fun where families can enjoy great food and drinks from local vendors and play all sorts of fun family-friendly games. And to add a noble cause to it all, each year BSB Shunyi donates the proceeds from Summer Fayre to charity.

BSB, Shunyi hasn’t hosted a Summer Fayre since 2019, but this year, they’re bringing it all back!

This year’s Summer Fayre will be held on Sat, Jun 3, from 11am to 3pm on campus at BSB, Shunyi. This year’s Summer Fayre charity is Educating Girls of Rural China.

Educating Girls of Rural China (EGRC) is the brainchild of Ching Tien who herself used to be an under-privledged girl from rural China, but who was lucky enough to be given the chance for a new life. Since its founding, EGRC has educated and lifted hundreds of girls out of poverty through financial sponsorship and emotional support, as well as providing career advice and opportunities for graduates. By offering to cover tuition and living expenses for rural young women, EGRC gives them the biggest gift of all – education that opens doors to a new world, to opportunities that these girls would not have otherwise had.

EGRC believes that education is the key to changing the lives of young women and that educated women have educated children. It’s the key for whole communities to strive for better lives for themselves and their future generations.

To make the event the best that it can be, BSB, Shunyi is looking for vendors to join and sponsor the event. Booth rental is RMB 800 for the day. It’s a great opportunity to introduce your business to the community.

To get involved with the event, contact the BSB, Shunyi marketing department at marketing@bsbshunyi.com

Mark your calendar and see you on Jun 3!

Let’s be honest here, whether it’s working from home or online learning at home, it’s easy to gradually lose your rhythm and motivation as time drags on. We start our life online full of enthusiasm the first few days, but as your days and weeks start blending in with one another, holding on to what drives you can become truly difficult.

For myself, I find that good lighting and something as simple as getting dressed as if I’m going to be working in the office instead of lounging around in my PJs all day helps keep me motivated.

We reached out to a few students at international schools in Beijing to ask them to share their tips and tricks for staying focused and motivated while doing online learning.

“I’m excited to see my friends and teachers in the morning every day,” says 9-year-old Grade 5 student Ayşe Nil from British School of Beijing (BSB) Shunyi. “I adjust my alarm every day, but I wake up before the clock rings. The increasing number of Covid [cases]worries me. I feel safe at home and I do not interrupt my education. I also experience digital learning ways. I take care of my cat, Cookie, between classes. She sleeps next to me while I study. My play room is now my online classroom. I know I will be going back to school again and I look forward to these days with confidence.”

Staying social with your friends and teachers online keeps the sense of community alive and dedicating a space at home to your online learning helps put you in a school mindset.

For Grade 5 student Acacia Whitney from AISB-Hope International, it’s about staying organized.

“Online school is not easy but if you stay organized and keep up with your work you can still make it fun and not too stressful,” she says. Acacia’s tips: 1. Keep your books and notebooks organized in order of your classes so you are ready. 2. Rest your eyes often by shutting them for a couple minutes every now and then.

Finally, it’s refreshing to have a positive outlook no matter what life throws your way. Instead of looking at shifting your school life online as a handicap in your edcation, some are choosing to see it as an opportunity to better themselves.

Grade 8 student Ryan Zhang from Western Academy of Beijing puts it this way: “Online learning is an opportunity for improvement, not a case of risk management like many may think. In online learning, teachers give us more freedom to complete work independently and improve our skills through our own learning. This is where student agency comes in – you must learn to research and lead your own learning, whilst still asking questions to your teacher, [and]managing your resources. Let’s be honest, it’s hard to stay organized during online learning. I have many issues with this – I start a task, and suddenly I remember I have to do something else, and get distracted. I have found that it definitely helps to make a to-do list of your tasks, and erase any items that you have completed. I do this by having a small whiteboard to my side that I can note down my tasks with. I also use the pomodoro strategy when doing work over large periods of time, which means using a small physical timer to time myself. I work for 20 minutes, rest for five, work for 20, and repeat.”

Got a tip to help make the most of online learning? Let us know in the comment section below.

Phillip J – Make ‘em 3D_New York City
19cm x 30cm x 20cm Paper sculpture

My memories of New York City are almost a decade old. From what I hear from those who currently dwell in the city, there has been a multitude of changes the city’s skyline. This is a visual representation of my black and white memories of New York city, where the historical Flatiron building stands beside Madison Square Park, just eleven streets south of the Empire State building. Further north, there stands the fifty-two stories tall H&M tower. Far down south to the Greenwich Village remains the apartment which Joey, Chandler, Monica, and Rachel once occupied.

Fatma E (Year 13) – Is it home or a glance into my childhood?
59.4cm x 84.2cm Oil pastel on paper

Home is what we perceive as a place we belong to or where people we are close to belong. This artwork shows one of the places I describe as my home. With the use of oil pastels, I was able to recreate elements of nature aiming to make it realistic. This realistic nature can be seen in the Impressionistic movement. Pointillistic elements for the roofs and in the background show further inspiration from Impressionism.

Phillip J – Life is a Highway
120cm x 70cm Charcoal and Pen drawing

There is something unique and distinct about the paths people walk on throughout their lives. For me, a constant change in living locations has brought a spectrum of new ideas, perspectives, and attitudes. I was born in Jeju Island — a sub-tropic island in the southernmost part of Korea— and moved to a metropolis, Seoul, then to New York City, a busier city, and, finally, to Beijing, where I am at the moment. Relocation and adaptation to these whole new worlds is what I portray in this piece. The highway connecting the two worlds represents the course of my life chronologically, from past to future. The background is drawn on craft paper with charcoal, emanating the serene, loose, and traditional mood of Jeju island, while the white square piece in the middle of the piece depicts Seoul with a clean pen drawing, reflecting the cut-throat and busy nature of Seoul.

Fatma E (Year 13)- Representations of nature
17cm x 59.2cm x 10.4cm Clay, paper, cardboard, sand, small rocks, leaves, sponge, earth, thread, cotton pads and swabs, paint, plastic

Nature should be protected. This is what people hear and say quite often. Is this true and for what reason may it be true? Do people think about protecting nature? Nature is what humans need to be alive and therefore it should be protected. The landscape models show different kinds of nature. Each piece shows a different climate zone from left to right: temperate and mountainous; mountainous and cold; tropical; hot and dry; desert; and polar climate.

Chiana I (Year 13) – Looming assembles
Acrylic Paint, Collage, Ink

Looming assembles is a collage made from different cultural ornaments. It explores the beauty of collaboration and intertwined ethnic relation. I have taken elements such as the gold foil, and a variety of color and texture to rearrange them on natural brown paper.

Mycah Walker – Portrait003
112x85cm Acrylic paint on stretched canvas

Using an image of my model in a light projection room in a gallery in 798. The brushstrokes over the model’s face are inspired by César Biojo’ works. They capture all the aspects of my original image, such as the emotions, onto a still image. This piece is purposefully placed next to Sculpture033 (2021) and Portrait333 (2021) because they are inspired by this painting. At this point my overall theme of beauty and destruction becomes more visible.

Pako Mosekwa – Wild Eagle shark
85 x 120cm Acrylic

This is an anthropometric artwork that was influenced by my fascination with nature. I picked out creatures that do not have much in common in order to create a unique personality and place all those features in a single creature to make a contribution to the creation of a new species.

Spring in the Courtyard

In April, YueCheng Courtyard Kindergarten shined with splendor and beauty as the spring light passed through branches and leaves, and the fragrant scent of begonia flowers swayed in the spring breeze. Spring in the Courtyard slowly unveiled its secret face in such an ethereal environment. The school held three themed areas: “Spring of Nature,” “Spring of Culture,” and “Spring of Art” for children, parents, and members of the YueCheng community, to present a “Spring Family Banquet.”

NAS Beijing, Shunyi Is Officially Open

NAS Beijing, Shunyi officially opened its brand-new campus for the first time with the school building completion celebration on Mar 12. The school held an explorer-themed campus discovery day, which was the most comprehensive event to mark the opening of the campus.

Every school is run by a kaleidoscopic cast of dedicated individuals – from teachers and administrators to support staff and cleaners. However, while it’s great that we celebrate Teachers’ Day and honor those who provide a direct service to our students, there’s an unfortunate lack of Janitorial Staff or Canteen Ayi Days to recognize these irreplaceable people in our communities who often operate behind the scenes. Jingkids decided it was time to appreciate these unsung heroes of our kids’ campuses, so we asked schools to nominate their less visible staff members for all their hard work!

Dou Shifu, Beijing International Bilingual Academy (BIBA), Property Engineering

“The Walking Map”

His name is Dou Jianjun and we’d like to call him Dou Shifu. He is in charge of the Property Engineering Department of BIBA. He has been working in BIBA for over 15 years. He loves his job. We call him “the walking map of BIBA” Because he knows all the facilities of school and even every pipeline. Whenever we need him, he will show up with a bright smile. No matter how hard his work is, he always keeps a pure and peaceful mind, which perfectly demonstrates BIBA’s educational concept of “Let Children be fulfilled because of us.”

Zhou Ayi, British School of Beijing, Sanlitun (BSB Sanlitun), Classroom support

“Going Above and Beyond”

Zhou Ayi has worked at the British School Of Beijing, Sanlitun Early Years for 14 years, quietly going about her daily role. Zhou Ayi is amazing with our Tadpole children (under 2 years old), she not only cares for them, attending to their personal needs (changing diapers, feeding the children, helping them to settle to sleep) but also goes above and beyond her role by playing with the children in the classroom, joining in at carpet time and even learning some English Nursery Rhymes and Makaton actions, helping the children to develop their communication and language skills. Zhou Ayi is a friend to everyone in our Early Years, she is patient and kind and is always happy to lend a helping hand or go that extra mile.

“As a new teacher to Tadpole class this year, I really appreciated Zhou Ayi’s help and experience, it made all the difference in making me feel happy and welcome in the new classroom.’’ says Rebecca Zhang – Tadpoles Class Teacher

Brenda Leung, British School of Beijing, Shunyi (BSB Shunyi), PR and Community Development Manager

“Always Ready to Help”

Brenda has worked at the British School of Beijing, Shunyi for seven and a half years as the Public Relations and Community Development Manager. Her dedication and love for BSB and education can be seen in her enthusiastic attitude coming to work every day with a great smile and her professional work ethic in doing what is best for the school and the students. Everyone can always count on her and she is always there to help.

Originally from Hong Kong, Brenda has lived abroad for more than 30 years, completed her IGCSE in England, and her BSc from the University of Toronto. She often shares her own international education and expat experiences with parents and students and assists in organizing school events to help new parents settle down in Beijing. She is an integral member of the team and has built many great relationships with our parents and community partners over the years.

Yajing Chen, Canadian International School of Beijing (CISB), Director of Finance

“Longest Service”

We would like to nominate our Director of Finance, Ms. Yajing Chen! The delightful Ms. Chen has worked with the AKD Education group for 25 years and as the Financial Director at CISB since it opened in 2006. Ms. Chen works incredibly hard, is always positive, and underpins so much of the behind-the-scenes of CISB. Ms. Chen, in many ways, is the unsung hero of our school, whose work all too often passes unnoticed because of her humility and attitude of service to the school and the CISB community.
