The Beijing Pizza Festival, Oct 13-14
It’s the sweet scent of dough and cheese rolling through the capital to new and exciting places, namely Zhongguancun’s sprawling Software Park in Haidian, which will play host to the 2018 Beijing Pizza Festival. We’ve finally found the perfect spot for this year’s fest, breaking new ground at that west Beijing location as we take it to the capital’s student and tech hub. Themed after Roman Holiday, the iconic 1953 romantic comedy starring Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn, this year’s event is an homage to the capital of Italy and the iconic dish that the country birthed – pizza. All ages. RMB 20 (presale), RMB 30 (on the door). 11am-8pm. Zhongguancun Software Park.

Nearly a thousand children, parents, and carers attended over the two days of the party. They played games, went trick or treating, and watched scary movies.

Dunkin Donuts were on hand to keep everyone’s energy up, in case the pumpkins full of candy weren’t enough. And the Haunted House was so spooky that some of the parents came out looking a little scared themselves:

Each session ended with a costume parade, featuring characters such as Donald Duck, Spongebob Squarepants and Kevin the Minion. Star of the show was a giant red Tyrannosaurus:

And of course all the kids and parents who looked so fabulous:

There’s nothing like candy to get a kid to wear a wig. Even if for only five minutes, my little bumblebee was the cutest (and maybe the only?) bumblebee in attendance at this year’s first session of the 9th beijingkids Halloween Party on Sunday, October 25 at the Canadian International School of Beijing. My 22-month old son was one of dozens of little pumpkins, but he didn’t mind. Unique costume or not, I was really there for my daughter. (Editor’s note: Click here for details on how to book tickets for the party at Keystone).

Echo will be four in January. We’re almost never in Canada in the fall, so besides occasionally putting her in costumes until she itched herself out of them, Halloween hasn’t been given much airtime in our household. So this year, at such a big event – put it this way: her eyes were wide, round lollipops.

The event included many vendors offering games and treats in exchange for scans of their WeChat QR code or a passed brochure. I laughed at the purist in me for assigning their advertising as the essential Halloween “trick.”

I would have liked to check out the haunted house, but the young man at the entrance with fake blood on his mouth was too scary for my bumblebee. The trick-or-treating down a hallway of classrooms, on the other hand, with the knocking, the yelling of “trick or treat!” and then the costumed respondent giving out free candy – well, my daughter got the hang of that very quickly and was overjoyed to be filling her little plastic pumpkin.

Afterwards, emerging from that hallway, I found myself tearing up. It wasn’t a sudden growth in sentiment for Halloween; it was more about the overall message in our attendance. My little Canadians and me (and my incredibly supportive in-laws) were at the Canadian International School of Beijing celebrating a very popular North American holiday – successfully instilling an aspect of their other country’s culture despite being so far away. My eyes filled up with a mixture of homesickness and pride.

Next step: figure out how to police the consumption of that little pumpkin’s stash…

[Update 10/22: Both sessions of the Oct 25 party are now fully booked and tickets will not be available at the door].

Halloween is one of those times in the year that brings out the kid in all of us. Although is the 9th beijingkids Halloween Party, I’m a relative newcomer: this year marks only my third event. A huge part of the fun for me, and for all our staff, is guiding kids as they trick-or-treat. It’s fun for us because of how much fun it is for them. Creeping up on doors in en masse, taking turns to knock, and chanting "Trick or treat!" together really gears them up for the candy that our friendly, furry mascots hand out.

Our party is special because it allows kids to have the full experience of Halloween, including all the fun of trick-or-treating in a totally safe, adult-supervised, indoor environment. With pollution what it has been over the last week, it’s reassuring to know that our events take place at two of Beijing’s top-tier international schools, Canadian International School of Beijing, and Keystone Academy. You won’t find cleaner air in Beijing than inside an international school campus! So whatever the weather or AQI, it’ll be full steam ahead on the festivities.

This year’s activities also include:

A school-themed haunted house (enter at your own risk! This is genuinely scary)

A professional family Halloween photo FREE for each family

Activities like zombie bowling, wheel of punishment, psych out boxes, monster feeding, and ghost hunting. All with prizes for everyone!

Pumpkin baskets to put all your goodies in

Real pumpkins to carve and take home

Scary face painting on-site – don’t worry if you haven’t got a costume, just come along and have your face painted.

Costume parade with gifts for everyone

The best thing about the beijingkids Halloween Party is the endless number of activities for kids available. It’s a whirlwind event: with so much to do there’s absolutely no chance for kids to get bored.

This year’s activities include:

Real on-site trick-or-treating – take your tots by the hand, go knocking on doors, and receive lots of candies and sweets from our friendly, furry mascots

A school-themed haunted house (enter at your own risk! This is genuinely scary)

Real pumpkins to carve and take home

Scary face painting on-site – don’t worry if you haven’t got a costume, just come along and get your face painted.

Pumpkin baskets to put all your goodies in

A professional family Halloween photo FREE for each family

Costume parade with gifts for everyone

Hollowing out vegetables and making scary faces from them is a Celtic tradition, imported to the New World and transposed onto the pumpkin. This year’s pumpkin carving will once again be sponsored by Too Too Organic Farm. Professional supervision and instruction will be on hand so your kids can safely carve the scariest jack-o-lantern to take home. (Supervised cutting, freehand scooping!)

Around the world, Halloween is becoming more popular each year and I feel personally responsible for this phenomenon. Don’t get me wrong, I know the world does not revolve around me – I’m on the earth, it’s the moon that revolves around me – but I do know that Halloween happens to fall on my birthday and I’ve noticed that each year when I celebrate my birthday in a different part of the world, Halloween gets more popular there.

Beijing was not immune to this affect as this year the beijingkids Club hosted not one, but two Halloween parties. Unable to grace both, this year we opted to return to the “birthday” bash at the Hilton Beijing Wangfujing. As in years past, there were a slew of treats, decorations galore (not to mention some light-hearted gore), an abundance of costumes, and a buffet that kept on giving (the sliders were great). Children carved jack-o-lanterns, went trick-or-treating on one of the hotel’s floors, bobbed for apples, danced (with abandon or reluctance depending on the child), played games, and basically had a fantastic time.

The noticeable change this year was the entrance to the party. The Hilton has a new general manager this year and it seems he and his wife are fans of the spooky holiday. They personally orchestrated the creation of all the decorations and created a long haunted house in the foyer, complete with a floating spirit, old cemetery and figures cloaked in black (death or death eaters, I was afraid to ask). Alas, I have no photos in the haunted house since Reina was curious enough to enter it, just not curious enough to do so without me carrying her every time we had to pass through the haunted house. However, I’m sure photos will surface on this website.

All in all, it was another great Halloween party and there were even a few rounds of “Happy Birthday” sung in my honor, which was really heart warming for me. I’m told that people would have sung it even if I hadn’t instigated the singing; something to keep in mind next year.
