The next book fair will be held next weekend on Saturday (June 7) at Keystone Academy from 10am to 3pm. Please bring your own shopping bags on the day. If you’ve got additional spare bags at home, feel free to bring those along with you to donate to Roundabout.

The next Roundabout charity bookfair will be held this Saturday (Apr 23) at Beijing International Bilingual Academy (BIBA) from 10am – 3pm.

This upcoming charity bookfair will be raising funds to help XuXu, an 11-year-old boy from Xi’an who was diagnosed with leukemia in 2017. XuXu has undergone 15 rounds of chemotherapy within the last 18 months.

Over the past few years, his family has spent RMB 300,000 on his treatment. They have done all that they can in order to support his treatments, but the financial difficulties have taken a toll.

Doctors believe that CAR-T therapy will be the first step in his treatment, followed by radiotherapy and a bone marrow transplant. The estimated cost will be another RMB 30,000, which the family simply can’t afford. To date, they’ve managed to save RMB10,000 towards XuXu’s treatment.

This upcoming bookfair is being held in hopes of raising the remaining balance for XuXu’s treatment.

On top of the good cause, the Roundabout bookfairs are always a fun family event! You’ll find a variety of children’s and adult books in both English and Chinese.

Since kids go through books so, so quickly, these Roundabout book fairs are a great place to load up on plenty of books without burning a hole in your wallet.

Roundabout book fairs are made possible by fantastic venue sponsors like BIBA and volunteers. They need help setting up the fair, running the fair on the day, and strong people to help take everything down when it’s all over.

Volunteering isn’t just for adults. Plenty of teens have spent their time volunteering with Roundabout making a difference and having a great time doing it.

For just arriving expats, Roundabout is an organization uniting volunteers in China to help those in need. Connecting the interested parties, Roundabout acts as a donation and distribution center, and also has a fundraising retail store. It all began in 2008 by Leslie Simson, who wanted to change the prevalent practice of throwing away tons of useful things in today’s consumers’ world. Now, the organization can either directly pass on the donations, or resell them at different events, or in a store.

The Roundabout community is very inclusive in who they help: children in poverty, elderly people, women in need, and those suffering from mental and physical illnesses. Another crucial part of their campaign is connecting potential donors with those who need transplants.

The Roundabout Book Fair is held on a regular basis at the British School of Beijing (BSB), located in Shunyi. The event attracts not only the school’s students and their parents, but also many newcomers. The donated books are sold and all the proceeds go to charity. The one that took place last August was intended to help two children battling leukemia, and raised as much as RMB 203,946. The organizers hope that this year’s event will be even more successful. Books in all different languages with genres from fairy tales for kids to romances and non-fiction literature for adults are available for purchase. Prices are RMB 20 for hardbacks, RMB 10 for paperback, and RMB 1 for kid’s books.

Cook-for-Hope, Apr 26

Cook-for-Hope is a charity cooking competition cum luncheon at Green T. House in Shunyi. The goal is to raise funds to cover the cost of Baby Pu’s diaphragm and heart reconstruction surgeries. Nine confirmed teams have signed up, with only one spot left. Teams will cook up a storm and indulge all attendees with culinary delights from Taiwan, Hongkong, China, Korea, Malaysia, Western (Nestle staff), Britain, Philippines (New Hope), and Singapore.
