Got a teenage foodie at home? Put their dining experience to work by becoming a panelist in the upcoming Juicy Burger Cup!

It’s once again time for the Beijinger’s Juicy Burger Cup, where the good citizens of this fine city choose the best burgers on offer. But this year, our 14th annual contest, we’re shaking it up a bit, and that’s where we need your teen.

We are on the hunt for a panel of burger experts to rank the city’s top 16 burgers.

This year, instead of round after round of head-to-head battles, readers will cast their votes in a single round to determine who makes the top 16.

The list of 16 will be handed over to our panel of experts, who will then choose the champion.

We’re collecting burger credentials now. All you need to do is fill out this survey here and we will consider your teen for the panel. Selected panelists will, when the time comes, be asked to rank the top 16. And thus, the ultimate burger list will be created.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Q: Do I have to try all 16 burgers before ranking them?
A: No, you only rank the burgers you have already tried. If you haven’t tried a burger, simply do not rank it.

Q: What if I’m selected as a nominator but can’t attend the Burger Fest?
A: Attendance is not mandatory. You can still rank the burgers even if you don’t attend – though the Burger Fest is a great chance to try a wide array of the city’s best.

Q: How will the final nominators be chosen?
A: The final nominators will be selected randomly from the pre-qualified list of individuals.

Q: When will the nominators be notified?
A: The nominators will be notified of their sacred duty right after Burger Fest concludes on Jun 10.

Q. Is there a prize for the nominators?
A: Nothing except free entry to Burger Fest – and the satisfaction of contributing to the collective wisdom of Beijing burger lore.

Q: Will the rankings be made public?
A: Yes, the collective rankings of the panel will be published – along with bios of all the panelists – in a final writeup of Beijing’s Best Burgers in June.

While last year’s Burger Cup was indeed epic, with almost every burger joint in the city in attendance and a variety of musical acts, the Beijinger team has been working tirelessly on making this year’s celebration (May 20-21, 11am-8pm) more burger-y than ever by including plenty of activities for kids and families to enjoy whilst devouring a burger… or two.

First off, there will be a family resting area. Don’t let the name fool you, as there are plenty of games to keep your kids entertained, while mom and dad take a load off or chat it up. Some of the games that will be included in this area include mini bowling, bull riding (we guarantee a real bull will not be used for this), and limbo.

At the south end of Galaxy SOHO, there will also be another play area presented by Limai Chinese American International School, Etonkids International Bilingual Kindergartens, and Kidsmile, where they will be organizing an even more extensive lineup of fun games and activities. These include but aren’t limited to a water balloon toss, musical chairs, face painting, and a ring toss. Need we mention that there will be lots of prizes to be won. Who doesn’t like prizes? This combined with our program of live music and famous Beijing DJs is guaranteed not to disappoint.

Make sure to buy your tickets early before the event to ensure that you get in without having to queue, and also receive some super cool swag (note: while supplies last) so that you are dressed appropriately for this year’s wild west theme. If you wait till arriving, unfortunately, we can’t guarantee entry as thousands of people have already purchased their tickets and much more are expected to arrive the day of. Make sure to prepare your family for a thermometer-bursting week (May 17- 20) as temperatures are set to rise across northern China, including Beijing, to record-breaking levels starting Wednesday and sticking around till the weekend. Beijing has never recorded temperatures this high, this early in the summer, so make your end of the week plans with this in mind.

The most intense heat with temperatures reaching or surpassing 38 C (100 F) will be present today and Friday. These temperatures aren’t far off from Beijing’s heat record of 41.9 C (107.4 F), which was set in July of 1999. That sounds like fry your egg on sidewalk hot, though we don’t recommend you making breakfast on these squelching hot pedestrian surfaces. Also, be prepared for the not so elusive emergence of the Beijing bikini.

Chances are this is only the beginning for unreasonably high summer temperatures as we also had another record-breaking day when the temperature peaked at 33.1 C (92 F) in Beijing on April 29, the hottest April day on record. So get your summer pool memberships sorted, as that will likely be a necessary activity come June and July. On a side note, Beijing’s lengthy list of public pools don’t normally start operating until the beginning of June, but there are other options you can find around town with a quick google search. We love the pool facilities at Phoenix City Apartments Sanyuanqiao, and seasonal passes here aren’t too pricey at RMB 500.

Now onto an even more pressing matter- this weekend’s 2017 Burger Cup at Galaxy Soho, happening on both Saturday and Sunday, from 10am-8pm. They are working tirelessly to prepare enough shade and sun-combating elements to make sure that burger consumption remains the focus of the weekend and not the oppressive heat. Anyway, things should let up by Sunday, which is in our opinion the more relaxed and family friendly day of the two-day event.

Two of our esteemed field of 64 have been disqualified from competition in the early rounds of the 2015 Burger Cup due to the removal of burgers from their menus.

Our reader-driven pre-seeding of the top 64 included Kro’s Nest, which long had sliders and a cheeseburger on their menu. However, we reconfirmed with them over the phone this week that they have removed these items from the menu (though they do promise a triumphant return of their cheeseburger pizza some time soon).

Meanwhile, readers ranked Migas quite high in the field no doubt to its reputation for fine food, fine drink and fine fun, but it came to our attention just yesterday they removed the burger from their menu quite some time ago. Whoops on us for not reconfirming before the bracket was released.

Therefore in the spirit of competition, both Migas and Kro’s Nest have been removed from this year’s competition.

Meanwhile, voting remains open until Sunday at noon in the Round of 64 over at www.thebeijinger.com/2015Burgercup. More than half the remaining battles are neck-and-neck, with virtual ties in six of the head-to-head competitions.

If you haven’t yet shown support for your favorite venues, vote now to send them on to the next round.

As the final pickles are pulled from their jars, the last kick is added to the aioli, and the vendors scramble around for those remaining necessities, we thought we’d best remind all you hungry folk out there about how to get to the venue for the Beijinger 2015 Burger Cup.

The burgers will be patiently waiting at Universal Creative Park, just opposite the north gate of 798, tomorrow, August 15. This family friendly event features two kids zones with fun activities to usher families back from summer holidays.

If you’re heading over via subway, take Line 14 to Wangjing Nan (望京南), exit at exit A, and then take a relaxing stroll along the airport expressway as masterfully indicated on the map below.
