Xiaozhen Library, a beacon of community learning and empowerment founded by high school students, is once again opening its doors to the youth of Beijing for an enriching summer camp experience. They’re calling for teen volunteers to join in and make a difference by teaching English to eager young learners. We don’t know where this kid gets their information but they know everything about everyone and they are usually dead-on accurate. It’s a little creepy but you gotta’ respect it, especially since one day they will probably work for their country’s secret service agency.

Whether you are craving white rabbit candy or flaming hot Cheetos they have or can get the contraband you are looking for. They know the street value and are happy to supply you at a very reasonable markup.

All you really need at camp is a week’s worth of clean clothes and a toothbrush. But no one told this camper that. They brought everything in their bedroom including a ball gown, 16 stuffed animals, a month’s supply of cracker jacks, and a solar-powered set of hair curlers. Because what if we suddenly decide to throw an end of the camp ball and while we are setting up there is a hurricane and we need to hide in a cave and it gets cold and we don’t have a coat so we need to use the stuffed animals to stay warm and then we get hungry and …..

The Prankster

Catch Phrase: “It was just a joke!”

Cellophane on the toilet seats, water balloons under pillows, and salt in the sugar bowl. This kid knows all the classics and has spent the entire school year coming up with new material. They are hilarious…at least in their own minds.

The Kid Who Hates Nature

Catch Phrase: “I hate this stinking fresh air!”

This child has evolved to love modern society and sees no point in living the way their ancestors did, but their parents made them come. They are counting the days to air conditioning, a gaming system, and food delivery services.

The Kid Nature Hates

Catch Phrase: “Is it ok?”

This poor kid came with six gallon-sized bags of clearly labeled medication including an epi-pen and emergency sublingual Benadryl gel. The councilors watch them like a hawk because they are allergic to bees, pollen, gluten, eggs, dairy, tree nuts, and basically anything that grows. Ironically, they are also often also an Enthusiast eager to try everything so long as it is not on the list of things that might cause them to develop hives.

The Theatre Kid

Catch Phrase: “You know what would make this even better? Choreography!”

This camper knows that all the world is a stage and if they can sing about it, dance to it, or turn it into a set-piece they will. Their flair for the dramatic can turn into high tragedy quickly if not indulged so this is the kid to tap to lead campfire entertainment.

The Naturalist

Catch Phrase: “I’m getting back to nature!”

This is the kid who insists that swimming in the lake counts as a bath. They shun soap, deodorant, and toothpaste and seem to enjoy the extra space the other campers give them. Oddly this usually only manifests at camp, the rest of the year they are happy to lather up and rinse off before heading to school.

The Serial Bestie

Catch Phrase: “But we NEED to be together, they are my BFF”

This social butterfly loves everyone, for about 24 hours. Unfortunately, they are fickle in their affections and they are a little annoyed that you can’t keep up with their rotating little black book of friends.

Me: “But I thought Casey was your BFF?”

Serial Bestie: Insert epic eye roll. “That was Yesterday!”

With the spread of the pandemic within the capital city forcing schools to go online and events to be cancelled, we are all left wondering how best to safely spend the upcoming May holiday. Lucky for us, we still have one thing in our favor and that is the weather. With the lovely springtime flowers in bloom and beautiful weather to enjoy it (*fingers crossed), why not take the opportunity to head outdoors and camp in some of Beijing’s natural surroundings?

My family recently had the privilege to camp in the Longyun mountains in the Miyun district. This was our second camping trip in Beijing and first one in spring time, which I must say is an improvement over our last camping trip in near-winter when we woke to frost covering our tent. Right now is the perfect time to enjoy the milder weather that Beijing offers for the precious few months every year.

We’ve rounded up a list of camp grounds that are within Beijing for your convenience!

If camping overnight sounds too daunting for you, you could always head to the neighborhood parks and outdoor spaces that allow tents, and just set up shop there for the day. It will still let your family take a break from the concrete jungle to enjoy the day together in the fresh air. Alternatively, there’s always glamping.

If you’ve decided you’re up for the challenge of camping out in the Beijing “wilderness”, brava! Here’s a list of our top ten tried and tested camping equipment that have done the job on our local camping trips.

Most of this equipment is available at the local Sanfo Outdoor 三夫户外 store right at the entrance of Chaoyang Park, though we opted to buy most of our equipment online or secondhand.

Whether you’re a seasoned camper or a first-timer, here are some things we’ve learned about camping in Beijing which make it a rather different experience from other countries and places we’ve camped in before.

The terrain is mostly rock, sand and dirt

Let us not forget that Beijing lies less than 300 kilometers south of the Gobi Desert, the world’s 6th largest desert. This explains why we are so often hit with those sand and dust storms that darken out the sky. When camping, this means you really need a cover (such as a rain fly) over your tent to help keep the dirt from blowing in. Also, in both the places we have camped, we have found ourselves needing to use steel tent stakes (like the ones below) to hammer into the ground, which is often ridden with rocks or just a rock bed itself. Aluminum ones simply will not do the job, nor will they hold against Beijing’s tenacious winds.

PRO TIP: These super lightweight Petzl Quark ice tools came in super useful as a hammer (the black knobby part of the one on the right). We bought them secondhand on Xianyu through searching “Petzl Quark”.

Also related to the point about the rocky terrain, we have discovered that where possible, carrying an air mattress can eradicate the usual pains and aches of sleeping on the hard ground. After much debate, my husband and I conclude that it weighs about the same as three sleeping bags, and is way more comfortable.

The temperatures vary quite a lot, even in spring

I spent almost 3 decades living in a tropical climate, so I’m still unused to the idea of how a standard spring day in Beijing can see temperatures as high as 30 degrees celsius at midday and then drop to below 10 degrees at night. This is especially true in the mountains, so remember to give some leeway when checking the weather based on your location within the city and prepare for it to get cold at night, no matter how hot it gets in the day.

PRO TIP: Don’t forget the repellent: We used sprays as well as patches all over ourselves and our tent.

At the end of the day, camping favors the prepared, and only experience will tell you what essentials you truly need for your family’s comfort level. However you choose to do it, spending time outdoors in spring is a quintessential Beijing experience, especially while we still can.

Cooking at Cuccina: Around the World in 8 Plates

From Dec 27-31, Pingo Space is hosting a cooking camp at the professional chef’s kitchen inside Cuccina for children aged 6-14. Through the unique power of food, students will learn about different cultures from around the world as well as some basic kitchen skills such as weights and measurements, basic knife techniques, and of course health and safety guidelines. They will learn recipes and record them in a secret recipe book while also developing their own original recipes with “mystery box challenges.” It will all come together on the final day as they cook and serve a meal to family and invited guests. Model Montessori Winter Camp

Mammolina Children’s Home will host a Montessori preschool camp from Dec 20-31. Based on Montessori work stations that are specifically designed to stimulate children’s senses, this is experiential learning where children are at their best. The school boasts a real natural playground with an authentic tree house made of wood, stone river beds featuring traditional Chinese boats to play with, and painted murals in their natural playground. What’s more, Mammolina will add extra artistic activities like baking, ukulele, and art. True to Montessori form, the camps will be mixed-age and bilingual. Model UN Camp

Haidian Foreign Language School will host this UNESCO-certified Model UN Camp. Participants will act as diplomatic representatives of different countries, debate and research policies, and then write and vote on proposals. Plenty of outdoor activities including sports and horseback riding will help participants form strong bonds as they learn to become global citizens. Two sessions of the program run this winter from Jan 23-29 and Feb 6-12. Participants should be between 9-12 years old. BSC Ski Camp

Beijing Yuyang Camp is hosting Ski Camp. 温榆河公园 (Wēnyúhé gōngyuán) Whenyuhe Park, which just opened last year, is my new favorite natural space in Beijing for so many reasons:

1. Admission is free!
2. It is within the 5th ring road and a one-and-a-half-hour drive from downtown Beijing.
3. It is huge, with wide-open spaces and green rolling hills, plus no amusement parks in sight! (Though there is a train the kids can ride.)
4. There are bookstore cafes on the premises where you can simply read and sip tea or coffee.
5. There is a sandy beach area by the river which offers water activities like boating. 
6. Camp Leopard!

Camp Leopard is a newly-opened day camping facility minutes away from the park’s lake and beach area, offering up to six hours’ worth of family-friendly activities. You can book one of their rustic little tents for just under RMB 700 and choose from a variety of tents overlooking the camp’s golden sunflower field. Enjoy their homemade fruit pizzas, ice creams, or juices (which are included with each tent booking) while sitting inside or outside the tent on a cushy chair. You are also welcome to bring your own picnic lunches.

There’s a small trampoline, hammock, and small kids’ toys available at the campgrounds to keep the kids occupied. Though just exploring nature will already keep your kids busy and out of trouble. For a small additional fee of around RMB 200, the camp’s super-friendly staff will lead the kids in a host of nature-driven activities that include painting a straw hat, learning to identify insects and to catch them, planting rice saplings in the paddy fields, and catching mudfish. Older kids can even learn to cut down the mature rice plants and harvest the grains! This involves handling a small sharp scythe so some parents may want to supervise, but the staff – all of whom are farmers themselves – are more than capable of managing the kids safely.

This brings me to my next point: parents can be as hands-off as they want, or participate in the activities. We sat around and chatted while the kids attended the straw hat-painting and insect identification classes. When it came time for insect catching though, most of us trekked through the tall grass alongside our kids to help them find grasshoppers and crickets, which we later chose to release. (You can bring them home as pets too.)

Even though the kids will don wet gear that covers them up to the chest, be sure to pack at least one change of clothes, for both parent and child, as we all got splashed aplenty as we excitedly stood around the mud pool pointing out mudfish for the kids to catch. Again, you can choose to release the mudfish you catch or bring them home. Apparently, they make an excellent dish served with tofu.

If you are staying in Beijing during the upcoming Golden Week and need a place for the kids to run off some steam, Whenyuhe Park and Camp Leopard are an absolute must.

For many families, camp is a rite of passage. Some go to the same overnight camp generation after generation while others enjoy sampling different options. And some simply avoid camps altogether. They might prefer to spend the summers traveling or think summer school is a better use of their child’s time and the family’s resources.

Either way, many families want their child to have a camp experience but wonder if it is really worth the cost. When asked my opinion by anxious parents I usually respond with, “Well that depends, what do you as a family want to get out of camp?” Below are my suggestions depending on the answers.

“We want them to have a good time… just not in our house:”  Hey! No judgment here! School is out, mom and dad need to work, and a full-time ayi isn’t in the cards. A good general day camp with lots of activity options is a great choice. Just make sure you do your due diligence. Many camps will hire teenagers to lead classes or worse, hire them as unpaid interns and put them in charge of a group of kids. Even the most responsible 16-year-old is still only 16! So, ensure that there is a qualified adult (or preferably adults) in charge of each group and that you are comfortable with the ratios.

“We want them to avoid the summer slide:” For those who aren’t familiar with the term, “summer slide” is a well-documented phenomenon by which kids spend all summer playing and return to school in September having forgotten most of what they learned the previous year. A good STEAM camp can be a fun answer to this problem. A camp like this should be run by educators who know how to use the arts to make science and math approachable and fun. In educational circles, these are often referred to as arts integration specialists. The fun factor is really important on this one. Make sure your kids won’t be sitting in lectures all day, that’s just summer school by another name and most kids will hate it. Instead, look for project-based learning lead by competent teachers.

“They want to learn X:” If your child has a specific interest – theatre or space travel, for example – zero in on a specialty program. Look for a camp that is as hands-on as possible and run by people who are experts in their field. For instance, a good theatre camp will have people who were or are working actors, directors, and playwrights but are also educators. The best option will have the children actively creating a play from start to finish (although it may or may not culminate in a performance). Your student should have a hand in every step of the process, from writing and costumes to acting and directing. Be warned though, these will be the costliest if they are any good. Experts and specialized products like lights and stage make-up are heavy budget line items that the camp needs to pass on to stay in business.

“We want them to gain some independence:” For the right child, overnight or stay away camps are great. I particularly think these are worth the cost when combined with a specialty program from above. An emotionally prepared child will do really well in an immersive environment where they are distracted from the normal nerves of being away from home by learning about something they love. However, for a child who is not ready, overnight camps can be awful. If your child is not ready to be away from you long-term in a strange place, don’t push them. College will come soon enough. If that’s the case, start with a day camp and arrange a sleep-over or two this summer.

A note on cost: You get what you pay for. Camps are expensive because the underlying costs of operating one are expensive, and the camp only has so much time to recoup the investment. Renting a safe space in a convenient location for a short-term day camp isn’t cheap. Good, knowledgeable staff don’t work for free, and even basic supplies like playdough and construction paper cost money. If your child is fed lunch or snacks the camp probably had to contract with a caterer, not to mention needing a license, insurance, and support staff to run the desk, answer phones, and do the massive amount of paperwork required to keep your child safe and the camp following government safety protocols.

It compounds with sleepaway camps. They pay rent and maintenance on the property and facilities, plus salary for a skeleton staff all year but can only charge for three or four months’ worth of services each season.

So, if a camp’s per week price is drastically lower than its competitors, ask yourself where they are cutting corners. When was the last time the pool or the zip line were properly inspected and cleaned? How well is the staff trained? Is the food safe and nutritious?

I know family budgets are tight, but your child’s safety is not the place to skimp. Don’t pay more than is necessary, but I strongly advise against bargain-basement deals as well.
