Chinese League Players Hope to Make Their Mark at Soccer World Cup
The 2018 FIFA World Cup kicks off in Russia on June 14, with 32 teams from around the world ready to serve up a feast of football. China didn’t make it, sadly, with Asian interest represented by South Korea, Iran, Japan, and Saudi Arabia. However, several players from the Chinese Super League will be there, some of them famous names. Javier Mascherano, now at Hebei China Fortune, will play for Argentina, while Jon Obi Mikel of Tianjin Teda has been selected for Nigeria. And Beijing Guo’an’s very own Renato Augusto (pictured above) is in the squad for tournament favorites Brazil. If your country will be there we wish you the best of luck; and if not, we can all enjoy a month of the beautiful game played at the highest level.

May the Force Be with You at the Star Wars Experience
Kids, and more than a few dads, will be excited to hear that the Star Wars Experience will open at Wukesong Stadium on June 16. Exhibits include a life-size X Wing fighter, virtual reality games, and recreations of sets from the movies. Pose for pictures with a lightsaber, unleash your inner Jedi – and try not to embarrass your younglings too much.

Summer Rings in the Changes
Summer always brings changes in Beijing’s international community. If you’re leaving, we wish you joy on your next adventure; and if you’ve just arrived, welcome to a vibrant and exciting, if sometimes challenging, city! Sadly, this month, beijingkids will be saying goodbye to our senior editor and Shunyi correspondent Andrew Killeen. He has been a wonderful person to work with and to learn from over the past couple of years. While he won’t be completely absent from the pages of our magazine and the website, all future insights into the funny world of being an expat dad will be done from the Killeen’s new base in Ningbo. We wish the Killeen clan all the luck in the world on their new adventure!

Rock Around the Clock (well, from 11am to 8pm) at the Beijinger Burger Festival!
One of Beijing’s most popular food events returns to Galaxy Soho on June 16-17. The Beijing Burger Festival of our sister brand the Beijinger has a rock’n’roll theme this year, so as well as 40 different vendors tempting you with their wares, there’ll be live bands, a karaoke competition, and a kids’ area for your little rockers. For more information and tickets, check out the Beijinger website: www.thebeijinger.com.

Nothing Sinister at All about Use of Facial Recognition at School
China is at the forefront of the use of facial recognition technology, so the news that a Hangzhou school is monitoring students’ faces with cameras is in no way sinister at all. The system assesses whether the kids are angry, sad, or sleepy, and then sends information to their parents, in a development which is perfectly normal and definitely not a horrific glimpse of a nightmare future. Strangely some parents were not delighted about this ingenious method of putting further pressure on children to conform and perform, but the Principal of the school defended the decision, saying that the cameras didn’t film the students, only tracked their movements and facial expressions. So that’s all right then.

We remember how excited we were when Sweetie Salad founded its online food delivery business back in 2014, way before what food delivery platforms are today (hard to imagine, really). At that time, Sweetie won its legions with, well, a legion of muscular workers who showed up to demonstrate how to shake it properly (and let’s not forget the Sparta saga in 2015).

The dining area is kitted out with long benches and a bright, clean decor

Now, the team have opened their very first brick and mortar location on the first floor at Grand Summit. The venue has a touch of picnic-themed décor; bright lights illuminate two long, large wooden tables where people gather on benches. Different kinds of greens and insects, and the slogan of “HAI – Health All In,” adorn the walls.

The various base salads are displayed in the counter upon which you add supplementary ingredients

A counter displays a range of ready-mixed salads (RMB 20 each), including grilled vegetables and coix seeds; avocado and orange; baked apple and brie; and dried beef and arugula. Additional ingredients such as your choice of protein can be added separately (grilled salmon or chicken) and there’s also a range of hot dishes (Italian spinach roll, crispy vanilla flounder with pistachios, roasted vegetables etc. for RMB 16-30). For drinks, there are coffees and teas (approximately RMB 25) or freshly made juices (RMB 35). If you’re still hungry, you can also bulk it out with a slice of bread or two.

Chicken, quinoa, and vegetable salad

The quinoa and vegetable salad used good quality ingredients, evident from its simple but vibrant flavors. The additional grilled chicken breast was succulent and seasoned with salt, black pepper, and a garnish of lemon, while the grilled salmon was a nice, long, and lean cut of moist fish. As for the drinks, the Strong Nutrition was a sweet and refreshing combination of cucumber, apple, carrot, kiwi, and kale. You can also opt for yogurt with muesli and fruit (RMB 25) or various types of kombucha courtesy of Papp’s Tea.

At RMB 70-120 per person, a meal with a drink here is perhaps a little on the higher side of similarly health-focussed restaurants. Saying that, the venue is a crowd pleaser, with many diners sticking around after they had finished eating. Now that they’ve rolled out seating on their adjacent patio, it looks certain that Sweetie Salad’s once entirely web-based clientele will quickly translate to visitors looking for a healthy fix.

Good Sleep and Stroke Prevention, May 25
Adults. One significant risk of sleeping disorders are strokes. In recent years, strokes have become the leading cause of death in China, and its incidence is increasing year by year. Strokes can lead to greater chances of morbidity, mortality, or rates of disability and are often recurrent events. This can create a heavy burden on societies, families, and individuals. Strokes not only affect the elderly, but as the pace of life accelerates, youth strokes are also becoming increasingly common. So do you know what causes a stroke? How to prevent a stroke from occurring? What symptoms might suggest susceptibility to strokes? And how should we react when a stroke occurs? In this Chinese-language event, Beijing United Family Hospital (BJU) will explain these issues in detail in this health talk. The objective of the event is to introduce the symptoms, diagnoses, and treatment of these problems, as well as to give some tips on prevention. RMB 50 (RSVP here). 2-5.20pm. The language of the event is Chinese. BJU.

After moving to Seattle from Beijing, I found that the Chinese food I craved the most were the regional cusines that are impossible to find in the US. Something I missed in particular was roujiamo (肉夹馍), soft pork sandwiched in a flatbread. So it’s no surprise that the first place I headed to when I arrived in Beijing last week was Huang He Shui (黄河水), a Shaanxi restaurant just outside Worker’s Stadium.

Roujiamo (RMB 9) is just considered a side here, held in one hand while the other hand works the chopsticks in a bowl of noodles. Nonetheless, I think it takes the spotlight at Huang He Shui, which has the best roujiamo I have ever tasted. It isn’t very oily, unlike the other roujiamo I have tried in Beijing; the meat is always juicy and the bread is soft with a slightly crispy exterior.

Another great dish to try is the one that Huang He Shui proudly advertises on a faded poster on the wall: biangbiang mian (RMB 22). At 57 strokes, the character for this noodle dish is so complicated that most dictionaries don’t have it.
It used to be considered beggar’s food, but is now a classic in many Shaanxi restaurants and has even found its way to the USA. Thick, wide homemade noodles are surrounded by a special sauce of soy sauce and vinegar, and topped with tomatoes, sliced carrots, various green leafy vegetables, and bean sprouts.

Be careful though: If you are not into spicy food, ask for bu la (不辣) – not spicy – or expect a sizable heap of chili pepper flakes on top of your noodles.

Although there is no English menu, the waitress will stand by your side to answer questions as you decide what to order. She checks off your choices on the laminated menu with a black whiteboard marker, and then you pay at the table upfront.

This is one of the rare restaurants in Beijing that has clear glass windows in front of the kitchen, so customers can watch the chefs stretch handmade noodles or prepare some meat if they’re lucky.

As a bonus, the bathroom at Huang He Shui is very impressive for a Chinese restaurant: clean floors, new sinks, no smells. There is a western toilet, although it is much dirtier than the rest of the bathroom – but c’mon, you take what you can get in Beijing!

Tucked into the Worker’s Stadium, Huang He Shui is very easy to find. Go into the Worker Stadium parking lot (just west of Sanlitun) from the east entrance and its yellow sign will be almost straight out in front of you. See the map above or click here for more details.

In a Nutshell

• Name: Huang He Shui (黄河水)
• Type of food: Shaanxi province (roujiamo, biangbiang noodles)
• Location: East Worker’s Stadium (west of Sanlitun)
• Price range: Around RMB 30 per person
• Bathrooms: Western toilets, decent
• Opening hours: Daily 24 hours
• Menu: Chinese-only

Information on biangbiang mian found on wikipedia.org

Leah Sprague is a high school senior and beijingkids’ intern for July. After living in Seattle for two years, Leah is super excited to be back in Beijing, where she lived from 2009-2012. When not at the office, Leah can be found biking or subway-ing around the city, soaking up everything before she leaves again in August.
