And, ’tis the season to overload your kids with as much holiday spirit and tasty snacks as possible.

This past Sunday on December 8, on a brisk Beijing morning, families joined Beijing’s local artisanal vendors and restaurants at the Canadian International School of Beijing (CISB) for their annual Charity Bazaar.

The whole gym was filled with eager vendors showing their latest creations to the Beijing expat community. Liuba Draws’ 2020 calendars and Christmas cards, with her distinct Beijing flair, was a huge hit, and Pinyin Press gave us Christmas gift inspirations for our friends back home with their adorable dim sum salt and pepper shakers.

It was truly a day of holiday fun and gift shopping for all of loved ones no matter how particular their interests. From Beijing’s foodie favorites Hulu, The Bake Shop, and major throwbacks with Palms L.A. Kitchen tacos – there were all sorts of snacks to keep the bazaar goers happy and full.

One of our absolute favorites at the fair was the table filled with homemade sugar cookies raising money for Days for Girls, a CISB student initiative providing girls in need with safe and healthy menstruation management with their DFG USA patented kits. These students volunteer their own time to make kits containing two pairs of panties, two shields, eight liners, soap, a care card, and washcloth. With the help of their experts and faculty advisor, these kits are sent to Nepal to young women without access to sanitation products. Seeing these girls who are so incredibly socially aware at such a young age is what the holiday season should be about.

We hope you had a great time at the CISB Christmas Bazaar and found the perfect Christmas gifts you’ve been looking for. Great job to the CISB Bobcats for creating another successful and charity bazaar! Happy holidays!

When it comes to building a successful school, the art of “community building” is undoubtedly a cornerstone of that success. There are many ways a school can use to construct a thriving and happy community of students, teachers and parents, and one of the most widely used methods is through large-scale events that invite families and staff of the school, as well as members of the local community. These events might mark particular cultural festivals such as Chinese New Year or Christmas, but also might be part of a school’s own particular culture.

In the course of an academic year, Beijing City International School (BCIS) holds at least three such community events, namely the Mid-Autumn Festival Event (held in late September/early October), the Christmas Bazaar (typically held during the last weekend in November), and “Spring in the City” (usually in mid-May). Each event is free to attend, and open not only to the school’s families, but also to the wider Beijing community.

Each event brings something a little different, and together they act as important platforms for BCIS to not just share its campus and facilities with the community, but also to create a unique family experience that offers lifelong memories for all. The year’s first event is the Mid-Autumn Festival, the most important aim of which is to show Beijing that BCIS is a school that greatly values its Chinese roots, and honors those roots with a grand celebration of Chinese culture. Coming up on November 28, 2015, the school will once again work with the Migrant Children’s Foundation to host the Christmas Bazaar, in which the students and teachers work hard to create an event that is not only enjoyable, but also works towards a noble cause — raising money to provide health checkups for migrant children. Finally, Spring in the City is BCIS’ own showcase of its great variety of student talent, including live stage performances, charity stalls, student-led activities and much more. Together, the events are part of BCIS trying to “live its mission” by fusing altruistic and meaningful activity together with evenings and afternoons of family fun.

Over the years, BCIS has discovered many benefits in opening their gates to Beijing and welcoming up to 3,000 community members for each event. It has to be said that bringing so many people together helps the school not only reinforce its values with existing community members, but also spread that philosophy to a wider audience. A school hosting such an event can showcase all the best things it has to offer, especially the warmth and friendliness within its community — the most valuable commodity of all. Another important benefit is the opportunity for the school’s students to participate, learning the value of contributing positively to their community, and helping try and make the world a better place.

Don’t forget that all are welcome to join in at the MCF/BCIS Christmas Bazaar, on Saturday, November 28, from 11am to 3pm at the school’s Main Campus at 77 Baiziwan Nan Er Lu.

If you’re looking for pies, to accompany your Thanksgiving turkey feast, why not get some sweet and savory ones delivered straight to your door. With pumpkin and apple pies for dessert, beef and chicken pies for mains, and sausage rolls for the buffet, there’s a flaky pastry for everyone from Two Guys and a Pie. Nothing says Christmas is on its way more than carols being sung by a choir. This weekend you can enjoy some wonderful singing, whilst shopping for Christmas gifts and treats at Beijing Riviera Clubhouse. After the carols, we’ll be heading home to put up our tree, and deck the halls. Whilst Ikea is one of the best places for decorations, wrapping paper, and fairy lights, you need to be in the right mood to face the crowds. Which is why, it’s so great to have Roundabout right on our doorstep, a one-stop-shop for all those Christmas needs.
As the season to be jolly approaches, the Rotary Club of Beijing will host its annual charity bazaar to raise money for various charities and causes. This year’s bazaar will be held at the newly refurbished Kempinski ballroom on November 9 & 10. A little spot of Christmas shopping, joy lifting Christmas carols, performance by students, a talk about technology and volunteering and a children arts auction are some of the things lined up for families.

Also in store is a kids’ corner that will be run by Artbug, My Gym and Eduwings Kindergarten. On hand will be volunteers from Rotaract and Interact to help keep an eye on the kids as parents shop as well as taste some wine and food. Feeling lucky? Join in the raffle action for a chance to win a business class round on Swiss Airlines, a luxury WEMPE watch, five star restaurant and hotel vouches and many more. The Kempinski will provide special meals at a discounted rate. As part of the fundraising for children and women charities around Beijing, there will be a silent auction and early bids are welcomed on items such as a WEMPE luxury watch, paintings by young upcoming artistes and more. The full list of items and the bidding process can be found here. The winning bids will be announced on the afternoon of November 10.

A New Chance with The New Life Centre

Over the past five years, the New Life Centre (with the help of donors) has been able to send young Chinese adults to university. Marginalized children who would otherwise be out on the streets are able to take shelter at the Centre, then given years of training and the opportunity to receive an education.

One such deserving young adult is Bob, a Henan native who embarked on a four-year BSc in Information Technology at a good college in Tianjin. The New Life Centre has known Bob and his family since 2005, when his older sister joined the Centre. She is now graduating with a degree in Accountancy.

The New Life Centre recently put out an appeal for donations to cover Bob’s first year fees. If you’d like to help out, contact Ginny at 139 1177 9630 or visit the Centre’s website.

Charity Bazaar

This Saturday, September 7 from 10am-4pm, forty vendors will come together for a charity bazaar at the newly-opened Radiance at Roma Lake (Luoma Hu). It’s the first big gathering for the back-to-school season. There will be gift items, home decor, jewelry and accessories, artwork, as well as Radiance’s own collection of antique furniture and items. Look around, pick up some items, and have a coffee break at Radiance Cafe next door. The bazaar coincides with Radiance’s tenth anniversary. It will be a special day at the store, so do come along!

Bath House Dining

One of the fanciest places to have a meal in Shunyi is Green T. House Living. Daily a la carte dining used to be available in their front hall, a cavernous white space that also doubles as performance and exhibition venue.

Now, the dining has been moved to the cozy and cool Bath House Residence. While parents enjoy some of the many dishes on offer, kids can splash around in the bath or explore the loft playroom equipped with DVD player, Legos and other toys. On good weather days, they can run around in the big gardens.

Green T. House Living hosts a wide array of events, and there are lots of autumn-themed ones coming up. On Thursday, September 19, there will be farmer’s market (stay tuned for details).

Pinotage Has Moved

The South African cuisine and fine wines served up for many years at the Lane Bridge Clubhouse location of Pinotage has just moved deeper into Shunyi territory. Pinotage is now located at the Chuangyiyuan compound (which also houses The English Tearoom) next to Beidong Flower Market.

Pinotage makes some very good soups and a delicious roast beef that you can order ahead to entertain at home. They carry an impressive selection of New World vinos. The new location will also have patio dining. Stay tuned for more details on their opening.

Stay in Shunyi

Our sister publication the Beijinger has posted some useful information on what is expected to be the nine worst traffic days of the year. They are all in September, making us wonder whether there is a special significance in Chinese numerology for the nine-nine combination. The first heavy traffic day was Monday, September 2, – the first day of school for local children. However, there are still eight more to brace for.

So if you are at all able to avoid going into town on the following dates, do it. There are lots of shopping and dining options around here that should suffice for those specific dates. Visits to the Forbidden City or Drum and Bell Tower can wait.
