Titled “Gratitude is Happiness Doubled by Wonder,” the Wonder Ball is a dance charity event organized by the Conservatory of International Style and Cultural Arts (CISCA) and Tian Art Foundation. After a three-year hiatus, this year’s event is all about showing appreciation to the supporters who have helped both organizations to continue their work throughout the pandemic and beyond.

“We are so grateful to be able to have dance as a medium to connect all of us from different walks of life. This year’s Wonder Ball is our way of giving thanks to our partners and patrons,” says Founder of CISCA and Tian Art Foundation, Flora Zeta Cheong-Leen, in a phone interview with jingkids.

Flora has had quite the journey, from dancer – as the first person of Asian descent to join the ranks of the Royal Academy of Ballet (RAD) – to actress to celebrated fashion designer to founder of CISCA – a dance school with over five branches and links to various international schools across Shanghai and Beijing – where she continues to teach ballet on a daily basis.

CISCA organizes the Wonder Ball to offer a unique opportunity for students to get an unforgettable stage experience, enhance technical skills, develop expressive and cognitive abilities, build up their self-confidence, and learn to work as a team. At the same time, it aims to raise funds to stimulate and support highly talented, but under-privileged children in their development within the performing arts through Tian Art Foundation and to benefit the Starlight Benefit Autism Art Therapy Public Welfare Project, founded by the Autistic Children Rescue Fund of the China Social Welfare Foundation.

The Wonder Ball this year will see CISCA students as young as 6 years old all the way to the adults of the professional dance company, twirl their way into our hearts. The mix of international and local performers demonstrates Flora’s keen belief that dance is a universal language that unites all who partake in it.

Would you like to be a proud sponsor at the Wonder Ball 2023? They are seeking sponsorship for relevant resources for the event. In return for your kind sponsorship, you will receive one full-page or half-page color complimentary advertisement or credit acknowledgment in the ball program for the evening and acknowledgments on the CISCA official WeChat.

Learning a special way to dance is just the beginning of this teen's dream!

It all started in 2016 after I saw a Latin dance competition. It was the beginning of my Latin dancer dream, and that dream would linger for few years to come.

When the competition ended, I started to wish that I would become an award-winning dancer, with medals and trophies of my own. I sank into a daydream, that one day, I too would be wearing a shiny dress, holding lots of medals and trophies that I’d won. But first, I needed training and that dream became my target. But how do I start?

When I asked my mother about it, she laughed and thought that my head was still in the stadium. The whole world seemed to laugh at me, but I didn’t give up. I kept on asking and after about a week she finally realized that I was serious about taking up Latin dancing. She helped me by researching dance studios and finally, we settled on classes at Yulin Latin.

The first time I walked into the dance studio, there was music everywhere and the classrooms were filled with children dancing. Dancing in their fancy dresses like butterflies, I admired and was desperate to be like them. I recognized some of them from the dance competition. They were like swans and angels to me, turning beautifully in the stadium. I met my two teachers – Yulin Li who also happened to be the owner of the studio and Lin, whose job was to correct my mistakes. I didn’t feel like they were teachers. They felt more like friends to me.

The classes were hard but I enjoyed every moment of it. When it came time for my first competition, I was nervous but I knew how important it was to me and I overcame it. When the music came on I danced with all my strength and did everything my teachers had taught me.

But this isn’t a fairy tale story. I didn’t leave the competition with a first place medal. In fact, I got a terrible score that time. Afterwards, I stayed in my room in tears for the rest of the day. My mother comforted me and asked if I still wanted to continue. Fortunately, I didn’t give up. It was a learning experience for me. I trained harder and got better.

By 2019 I had entered my second competition with the encouragement of my friends, family, and teachers. I won 6th place – and places 1 – 6 got trophies. I was ecstatic! Over the next few years I trained even harder and finally I was able to get a first-place trophy.

My time at Yulin Latin gave me freedom and it was like a paradise for me – an unforgettable memory. It taught me life lessons and helped me succeed.

For my peers looking for a new hobby, join me for a dance.

Those who have been pregnant will let you know that not everyone has a picture-perfect pregnancy experience. Moms who have been pregnant multiple times will also tell you, no one pregnancy is the same as the next. With each comes new concerns, restrictions, and physical adaptations as the body adjusts to each pregnancy. There is also the doctor’s advice, which is as varied as are pregnancies in the world. But for the most part, the most generic tried and true advice for pregnancy is to eat healthily, remain active, stay hydrated, and go for all your checkups.

The remaining active bit is however vague for most as it means anything from walking across the room for some moms-to-be to lifting weights and running a few miles a day for others. So what happens when you feel up to doing more than looking for the TV remote in your living-room but not quite up to pumping iron at the gym? Dance might be a good alternative. Mom of 3 and Zumba enthusiast Alessia Chizzoniti would know a thing or two about dancing your way to a healthier pregnancy as she, along with other Beijing moms, gets ready to host Fit Bumps – From One Mom to Another. Beijingkids spoke to her on dancing and pregnancy, what to expect, and what the benefits you should get might be.

Alessia Chizzoniti

BJK: How safe is dancing for women who are in different trimesters of pregnancy?

Alessia: Dancing is very safe and is actually recommended for pregnant ladies, no matter the trimester. Dancing is a fun and gentle exercise that everyone can enjoy. This is the perfect time to connect with your body and your baby through movement and awareness. You have primal and powerful birth instincts within you, awaiting activation. You’ll be surprised at the numerous benefits for your pregnancy, your birth, your baby, and your postpartum recovery. I always remind moms to listen to their bodies and inform me of any little change or discomfort they may have experienced, as to adjust the program according to each one’s needs.

BJK: What are some of the direct benefits of dancing through pregnancy as a way to remain fit and active?

Alessia: Through dancing, you become progressively more centered, grounded, agile, strong, and self-assured. Dancing is beneficial in pregnancy to reduce your stress and tension by activating your “feeling brain” instead of your “thinking brain”, anchoring you so pleasurably in the current moment that neither the past nor the future can interfere with the perfection of right now. You’ll find yourself fully experiencing your birth. Another benefit of dancing through pregnancy is that it increases the flow of the “love hormone” Oxytocin which helps you bond with your baby and during birth positively affects the length, strength, and duration of your uterine contractions.

Yet another benefit of dancing is that it correspondingly lowers the “fight or flight hormone” Adrenalin. Another wonderful benefit of dancing is that it gives you confidence in your body and movement, which lowers your stress and allows for increased levels of Oxytocin to shorten labor. Oxytocin triggers your primal birth instincts. Dancing reduces the risk of interventions like forceps, vacuum, and cesarean by correcting fetal mal-position and opening your pelvic outlet wider. It also has been scientifically proven to diminish labor pain and increase birth satisfaction. Last but not least, through dancing gravity will be your alley for a smooth, physiological birth. Furthermore, after labor, the same hormones that help labor, help shrink your uterus back to size in the immediate postpartum period. Dancing throughout your pregnancy gives you and your baby repetitive motions that will be familiar and comforting for your baby, encouraging bonding, and aiding in soothing – a huge benefit for you and your baby.

BJK: How often would this sort of exercise be encouraged for pregnant women?

Dancing for birth classes are usually held once or twice a week, as they incorporate also labor coaching and prenatal education. Dancing in general is encouraged any time any day!

BJK: Let’s get to the meat and potatoes of it! What would this class consist of?

Alessia: Class lasts one hour. We start with a gentle warm-up, to get ready to literally shake our hips! We use organic movements and physiological positions to build up the fun and easy choreographies, and most important we build circuits moms can easily use during labor by themselves or with their partner’s support. We incorporate Dancing for Birth evidence-based Birth Method and signature moves like “Dilation Gyration” in every routine to make the class effective regarding labor preparation and make moms experience the moves, train the body and build “body memory” for the big day. Class is filled with techniques and tips, like how to use gravity for a more effective birth. Did you know there is an optimal fetal position and you can help assure it? We end the class with gentle stretching and some workout for the pelvic floor. We follow up in the group chat, as I usually send info after class about what we just did so that mom can practice by themselves if they wish and build awareness and confidence. The aim is to learn techniques that support your own physiological birth instincts, and increase your confidence for empowered, enjoyable birth (yes, natural birth can be enjoyable!)

BJK: What are some of the safety precautions during the class?

The studio is regularly disinfected, so is the equipment (yoga mats and blocks, seats, etc). Spots are limited to make sure we can keep the safety distance at all times.

Ever just get the need to get out of the house, ditch the chores, ditch that proposal you’ve been working on, forget about the kids’ homework and head out dancing? Then you realize it’s three in the afternoon and all of Beijing’s dancing spots won’t be worth going to until right about midnight? Then you remember you haven’t been up past ten in as many years? Well, not this weekend! This weekend, you get to have your dance and your sleep too! Join the Beijing groovers at the Rivera East Lake tennis court for some fun and a whole lot of dancing. And all for a good cause!

The Staying Alive Fundraising Dance Charity Event is brought to us by our favorite Beijing charity shop, the Roundabout. In case you haven’t heard about the Roundabout, all you need to know is it’s an awesome social enterprise headed by volunteers, providing free services and connecting those who wish to help either monetarily or otherwise to those in need. Its also been around since 2008 and over the years it has supported over 48 charitable organizations even as far afield as Inner Mongolia. They also have amazing stores where you can get anything you could possibly imagine, from household items to clothes and everything in between, all for a wonderfully low price.

Take advantage of Beijing’s first few days of deliciously warm summer, and dance the afternoon away. Bring the kids along and enjoy the beautiful tranquillity of Riviera East’s lakeside court at the dance location. Don’t worry if you are undecided as yet. You can always grab your ticket at the Bejing Riviera East reception desk or you can stroll over to the Roundabout, and once you’re done grabbing a few goodies, snag your tickets there. They are only RMB 50. See you all there!

Chizzoniti told beijingkids that kids are free of charge, though parents can choose to buy extra tickets to donate to the charity. She especially wants to acknowledge the support of Hulu, who are willing to help without charge for the charity event.

Sara Villasenor, Jindafit Business Manager and Instructor told beijingkids, “This year, for our Beijing Unga-Jindafit collection and proceeds donation we have chosen to work with a private charity in Berlin, ran by one of our partners Diana Harmuth Arwa , which sends two containers of school supplies and clothes for children in The Gambia, Africa. Our partner has been running this program for 15 years and we’re happy to strengthen our network of supporters in order to reach multiple locations.”
