Tell us about yourself.
I’m from near London in the UK and have been in Beijing one year. I have three children – ages 25, 23 and 19 – who were educated in the Southeast of England.

When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up? Who was your childhood hero?
I wanted to play cricket for England when I was a young teenager. My hero was a combination of Ina Botham, Viv Richards, and Barry Richards.

What kind of student were you as a child?
Reasonably good all-rounder – sportsman, actor, and academic.

What was your image of the school headmaster when you were a student? How do you describe your image now?
The headmaster at my school was a slightly eccentric, rather distant man. I’m working on it! But I hope I come across as friendly, knowledgeable with high expectations for the students.

Did you ever get sent to the headmaster’s office?
Yes – caned for asking my housemaster if he’d had his hair cut! I still feel the injustice of it!

What kind of jobs did you have before becoming a headmaster? I was courier on a French campsite, a driver, and a worker on a building site but best was a cleaner of aircraft. I once nearly passed out cleaning the wing of a jumbo jet with a fluid that made me feel rather light-headed!

What is a typical day like in the life of a headmaster?
Very varied – meeting parents, seeing students, talking to teachers, planning school strategy, checking standards, attending concerts, watching sports, and laughing with colleagues. All in a day’s work!

How do most people respond when they find out you are a school headmaster? How do your kids or your spouse introduce you to their friends?
They are now used to it – I’ve been a head for 12 years. They used to say, “It’s not possible, you’re far too young to be a head!”

What job would you want to do if you were not a headmaster? Why?
A lawyer, journalist, diplomat, academic, naturalist, or a professional golfer.

In all your time as an educator, what is the most important lesson you’ve learned?
Never think you know enough to stop learning more. Always listen. I regularly am tempted to think I’ve grasped someone’s point of view and to try to quickly ink in the gaps without processing the full detail in front of me.

Dulwich College Beijing Hosts ISCMS Festival
The International Schools Choral Music Society (ISCMS) was founded in 2008 by Shane O’Shea, then head of music at Dulwich College Beijing (DCB). The first gala concert was held at the Forbidden City Concert Hall, where students and teachers performed Faure’s Requiem.

Now, DCB is once again getting ready to host over 300 students from international schools around Asia and the Middle East. They will visit Beijing for a week of workshops and master classes with six international music practitioners.

The festival will culminate in a gala concert featuring double Grammy Award winner Christopher Tin, who will conduct his new piece, Temen Oblak, with the student choir and Beijing Youth Orchestra. The concert will take place at the Forbidden City Concert Hall on Saturday, February 22 at 7.30 pm.
United Family Healthcare Shunyi Expansion
The United Family Shunyi Clinic has been expanding its services for years, but the latest renovation creates even more space for new facilities and services. To celebrate the expansion, the clinic is planning to hold special community events every season. Mark your calendars for:

Free eye checkups: The United Family Shunyi Clinic will offer free eye screenings from January 20-22.To make an appointment, call 8046 1102.

Pediatric dental talk: Pediatric Dentist Dr. Irene Lau will give a talk on Wednesday, January 22 at 10am on the factors that influence oral health and introduce simple tips for your little ones. There will be a Q&A. To RSVP, contact jenifer.sullivan@ufh.com.cn.

By the end of the month, the clinic also expects to have ENT and gynecology services. There will also eventually be a fully operational laboratory and radiology department; for now, there are limited schedules for both services. In March, the clinic will offer free hearing tests and dermatology consultations.

Mom-Approved: Dr. Christian Lemm
While we’re on the subject, I want to put in a personal recommendation for United Family Shunyi’s new family medicine doctor, Dr. Christian Lemm. Dr. Lemm is from Germany and speaks English, German and conversational Italian.

The fact that he moved to Beijing with his family in the middle of winter and worked the clinic the day after Christmas is enough to get a thumbs-up from me. But more than that, we liked his bedside manner and his very thorough approach to treating the respiratory conditions that brought us running to the clinic. Before prescribing any medication, Dr. Lemm took the time to explain the condition and how medicine would help to treat the symptoms.

He was also the first doctor I encountered who could give us a clear picture of my son’s asthma problem. He explained the effects of different medications so well that my son was able to repeat the entire explanation – complete with diagrams – at home to his father and older brother. This is a great skill.

DCB Opens Ice Rink to the Public
Also at Dulwich College Beijing, the ice rink is now open to the public at the following times:

Monday, 3.45-6pm

Tuesday, 5.15-7pm

Wednesday, 5.45-7pm

Thursday, 3.45-6.30pm

Friday, 3.45-5.15pm

Saturday, 10am-noon

A section will be cordoned off for public skating since part of the rink will be used for classes. The price of admission is RMB 50 and includes unlimited skating for the duration of the public skating time slot; ice skates and helmets are included. Dulwich has a limited supply of elbow and knee pads for rent, so the school encourages families to bring their own. Payment can be made at the Dulwich Sports Dome Reception. For inquiries, call 6454 9127.

This week marks a big celebration for American families. Even if your own family doesn’t do a huge turkey and pie dinner, it is never a bad idea to pause and reflect on all the good things that have come to us over the last year, and to be grateful for family and friends, near and far. Happy Thanksgiving!

Beijingkids in Shunyi Bazaars
This weekend past, beijingkids participated in two bazaars in Shunyi, the WAB Charity Bazaar and the BSB Christmas Fayre. We had Christmas card-making activities for kids, as well as some unique mugs for sale. Inscribed with “Beijing’s Best Dad”, “Beijing’s Best Mom” or “Beijing’s Best Kid” on one face, and the Chinese translations on the other side, the mugs were popular among kids wanting to buy them for their parents. A very sweet gesture.

Dulwich Ice Rink Now Open

To mark the arrival of the coldest months, Dulwich College Beijing opened its ice rink with an official launch last Saturday, 23 November. Dulwich is the first school in Beijing to build its own rink and is soon going to be offering lessons for beginner skating, figure skating, synchronized group skating, and ice hockey through the Dulwich Community Programme.

Contact Coach Camilla at Camilla.Ojansivu@dulwich-beijing.cn for availability.

O’le Music in Shunyi

Good news that O’le, which has long been popular for its wall-climbing programs, has now ventured into music. The even better news is that O’le is now in Shunyi.

O’le is introducing the neighborhood to its Shout! Choir, which provides a chance to sing rock and pop songs as part of a group for fun. The organizers have carefully arranged the parts and use a simple system, so no prior experience or knowledge of music is required. The first session is free, so come along and see what it’s all about. Wednesday mornings from 10.30am-12.30pm at The English Tearoom near Beidong Flower Market.

The company is also offering a unique birthday party or group activity experience, Trash Bash, which is perfect for kids who love to make noises with everything they can get their hands on. And now, they can do it without annoying their parents! The instructor will lead the whole group to bash, scrape, blow, and hit various everyday objects in an arrangement that sound unbelievably like music.

To find out more, sign up for the weekly courses, send an inquiry form for birthday parties here, or email Pete at bookings@ole-music.com with any questions.

Christmas Decorations Shopping in Shunyi

And from one holiday to another…

The best bets for Christmas tree and decoration shopping are in the city, and in the December issue of the beijingkids magazine, soon to be released, you will find the best places to find everything Christmas.

But Shunyi has its own small collection of places to check out, in case you need something in a pinch or don’t feel like making the trek downtown.

Whether you decide to go for a real tree or an artificial one, you’ll find it in Shunyi. Pine trees will soon become available from the flower vendors by the pedestrian entrance of Capital Paradise on Yuyang Lu. Artificial trees can bought from the Beidong Floriculture Garden as well as Jenny Wang’s grocery store in Pinnacle Plaza, which has set up a small chalet right outside the parking lot housing a selection of trees and decorations.

Enterprising local vendors in Shunyi are quick to read what foreigners look for during holiday season. Most fruit and vegetable sellers (and the bigger grocery stores) will have a hodgepodge of Christmas decor available. Tai Tai Shop carries Christmas cards, ball ornaments, and crackers. Stella’s Woodcarving has quaint hand-carved manger scenes. Radiance has a few unique items and tree ornaments. But the biggest displays of all things Christmas will still be at Beidong Floriculture Garden. Everything from lights to spray snow and fake holly, dancing Santas, and even tableware will be there.

Anyone who has ever sent a child to school, or knows anyone who has ever sent a child to school, will remember that the end of November and all of December are activity-filled months. Whether the celebrations are pagan or religious, country-specific or more universal (or to simply mark the changing of the seasons) the calendars are heavy with gatherings and happenings.

The international school scene in Shunyi is no exception. This week you will find many things to look forward to as the days grow colder. So why not bundle up and head on out to any one (or more) of these activities at the district’s schools?

As the first month of 2013 draws to a close, there’s still plenty going on and already planned for February. Coming up is Chinese New Year, Valentine’s Day, and by the end of the month hopefully a glimmer of spring. Here are some things to mark in the calendar:

*Tomorrow (January 31) enjoy a pre-CNY and pre-Valentine bazaar from 11am-3pm at Green T. House Living in Shunyi. Vendors will showcase all of their beautiful items, from jewelry to cashmere, gifts and more. There will be a drop off for Roundabout charity donations, and all table fees will be donated to Roundabout as well. While there, enjoy a fabulous buffet lunch, too!

*The annual Dulwich College Temple Fair provides fun activities and great entertainment, and it’s open for all to enjoy! Come to the Beijing Riviera clubhouse on Saturday, February 2 from 10am-2pm to enjoy lion dance performances (10:30am, 11:30am and 12:30pm) as well as opera mask changing performances (11am, noon).

*Also on Saturday with Dulwich is the annual event, The Red Ball! From 6:30pm-11:30pm at the Hilton Beijing Capital Airport, this wonderful evening supports Educating Girls of Rural China (www.egrc.ca). All are invited to attend the cocktail reception, four-course dinner, live music, fabulous auction prizes and much more. The goal is to raise RMB 200,000 to support 15 girls in their quest for a high school or university education. Tickets are RMB 900 per person; contact Veena Rao at 136 8355 4744 or raomittal@yahoo.com for details.

*Fitness is usually on the list of new year’s resolutions, so here are some great classes to consider by Stella Chan Marinaro.

Fit and FAB (Females Achieving Balance): Get group nutritional counseling, cooking/tasting demonstrations, and learn about losing weight and keeping it off. Classes are Friday mornings from 10-11am at Boulangerie Nanda in Cathay View Plaza; RMB 80 per class.

GAB (Girls Achieving Balance): Designed for pre-teen girls to promote healthy choices and self-respect, the girls exercise, talk, and make friends while learning healthy life-long habits. Classes are Fridays 4-5pm and have already begun; RMB 750 for six weeks.

Spin +: high intensity indoor cycling classes set to great music, held at the Human in Motion Fitness Studio in Cathay View Plaza; RMB 150 per class or RMB 1,350 for 10 classes.

Contact Stella directly at stella@achievingbalance.asia or 1860 127 4767 for specifics.

*Another fitness option is a new class in Dragon Bay – Body Balance, a low intensity exercise inspired by yoga, tai chi and Pilates. It improves joint flexibility and strength, and helps you feel centered and calm. Held on Fridays from 10-11am at the Dragon Bay clubhouse; contact antjepfeiffer@ymail.com for details.

*Shunyi crafters, take note! Stella at the woodcarver’s shop is selling her collection of craft supplies. From decorative hole punches and craft scissors, to candle-making or soap-making kits and much more, contact Stella directly if you are interested (136 9334 0571).

*The Roundabout book fair continues at The British School of Beijing in Shunyi until the CNY break. You can visit the campus during school hours (Monday – Friday from 9:30am-4pm) to purchase books, puzzles, games and kids DVDs.

*New year, new prices. The car wash over on Tianbei Lu (near Tom’s DVDs, Stella’s Woodcarver Zhang, and others) has increased its price for a regular car wash to RMB 25. While inflation has seen the price increase about 66% over the past five years, we can hardly complain about a $4 car wash.

For those of us who identify ourselves as mathematically inept, perhaps a workshop from a Mathemagician would have made our numerical illiteracy disappear. Senior school students at Dulwich College Beijing had the privilege of attending workshops on Monday, December 3, and Tuesday, December 4, with not one but three Mathemagicians from the University of Oxford.

The Mathemagicians also held workshops with Dulwich senior school students and teachers, and older students attended an informal Q&A session to ask the Mathemagicians about Oxford and its mathematics department.

Just who are Mathemagicians? Formally known as Marcus’ Marvellous Mathemagicians, these distinguished arithmetic dynamos are postgraduate mathematics students. Their cause is championed by the distinguished Marcus du Sautoy, who is the Simonyi professor for the public understanding of science at the University of Oxford. He has written a number of books about math, and runs the Mathemagicians program, which sends those integer-fluent whizzes around the world conducting workshops.

If you’ve noticed a proliferation of men with facial hair this month, it’s not because of the cold weather but because of Movember, a month that encourages males to get creative with their facial hair to raise money and awareness for men’s health issues. Teachers and IB students and Dulwich College Beijing have embraced Movember with every hair follicle and made a school-wide fundraising project of it. For each day that the school raises RMB 100, the most follicular teacher will keep his mo a day longer.
