For most teenagers, the immediate future involves deciding which class is next. For 19-year-old Milly Wang, the horizon is occupied by her next restaurant concept.

Milly has opened Farmily, her second business venture, and this time, the hyper-successful teen is deliberately pressing the brakes. Moving from the quick-service model of her first enterprise,  EIS Engelchen, Farmily is designed as a space to slow down. The concept is simple: a place to grab a quality sandwich, linger with friends, and take home fresh-baked pastries.

Stepping inside, the atmosphere immediately communicates that intention. The scent of fresh bread drifts through the air, settling over wooden tables bathed in soft light. The effect is one that’s warm and calm, a stark contrast to the typical pace of fast food.

That tranquility is rooted in a philosophy of provenance. Their bread is baked on-site using grain sourced directly from a farm, reflecting Milly’s belief that knowing where your food comes from is essential. This attention to detail is a lesson learned from her previous experience running an ice cream shop, where she discovered how small, intentional choices can define a space.

While the buttery croissants are the daily stars, often selling out before the day is over. Milly’s personal favorite is a quieter offering: the yogurt bowl. Featuring zero-sugar yogurt, homemade granola, and a drizzle of fresh honeycomb, it represents the kind of wholesome, crafted food she wants to be known for.

Managing the launch of a restaurant while attending college is a monumental balancing act. Milly admits the hardest part is the daily mental shift required to toggle between the mindset of a student and that of a business owner.

Ultimately, Farmily is more than just a business expansion; it is a personal project. With this new venture, Milly is aiming to build a sanctuary—not only for her customers seeking a respite from their day but also a quiet space for herself.

This one’s more for teens, and you’ll know exactly what I mean the minute you see their menu. Since the moment our kids learn to walk on their own and start wandering around the house by themselves, parents lock up the drain cleaner, put the laundry detergent up high, and drill into our kids’ heads that certain things should never, ever go into their mouths. At PinkDojo Market’s DojoCafe, they’ve done the exact opposite.

Located in Sanlitun’s 3.3, this quirky shop sells cute novelty toys and snacks, it’s better loved for its Instagrammable backdrops. But they’ve got a cafe with an odd menu where their signature cake is a Brillo pad. The Scouring Sponge Cake makes regular feature appearances on social media.

Then there’s DojoCafe’s Sea Salt Orego Soap Mousse that’s shaped like a bar of soap. This dessert balances salty and sweet, with crunchy Oreo bits contrasting against a smooth mousse. Like the sponge, this one is also cute and quirky.

But their drinks are where, as a parent of a young child, I cringe a bit. Their Blue Velvet Coffee tries a bit too hard to resemble household cleaning chemicals…

We all have that go-to list for reliable Italian cravings. The place for a quick and satisfying slice, the spot for a romantic bowl of pasta, and the hidden gem you only share with your closest friends. But what if you could find all of that – plus one of the most decadent, conversation-sparking dishes imaginable – under one roof and in Tongzhou of all places?

I don’t know how long they’ve been open, but my latest hangout

They don’t just serve Italian food; they serve an experience, and in my case, that experience is nostalgia for my early 20s.

Let’s start with the foundations, because they are rock-solid.

For the purists, the pizza here is a revelation. Each pie is hand-stretched to order and blasted in a searingly hot brick oven. The result? A crust that is a masterpiece in itself – charred, chewy and impossibly light, providing the perfect canvas for tomato sauce, cheese and a whole variety of toppings you can choose from.

Their pasta is equally impressive, but we’re a cheese-obsessed family and our favorite on the menu has got to be their pasta alla ruota (or cheese wheel pasta). It’s exactly what it sounds like. Perfect cooled al dente pasta gets a generous coating of cheese as it’s rolled it in a giant wheel of Parmesan cheese before being served to you.

But wait. Pizza and pasta weren’t why we went to Grande A’moo. I wanted my 5-year-old daughter to have a taste of her first cheese fondue.

I used to live in Switzerland. If there’s one thing that my friends and I did every winter, it was to open up a reasonably priced bottle of wine and eat some homemade cheese fondue.

Now, to be completely fair, the fondue at A’moo is not what I would call authentic, but we had a great time dipping everything in a thick layer of cheese. The bread was great, but the fried chicken (although tasty) was a bit weird.

We spent an amazing afternoon unbuckling our belts at Grande A’moo and even ended the meal with a super-rich vanilla ice cream that my (normally very generous) daughter didn’t want to share.

The Forbidden City is one of the most phenomenal historical sites to see. There is an unwritten law that says that one cannot come to Beijing without seeing the Forbidden City. My grandparents visited us for my tenth birthday recently, but unfortunately, we could not go because of the military parade. But we had a backup plan.

The unwritten law says you’ve got to see the Forbidden City, so instead of actually visiting the palace, we would still be able to see the Forbidden City from Jingshan Park, 景山公园.

Jingshan Park is located north of the Forbidden City, and on a clear day, one can climb to the top of a hill situated inside the park and be rewarded with a stunning view of the grand Forbidden City. On the other side, one can view the famous Confucius Temple, Beihai Park and even the National Theater. I have been inside the Palace Museum, but I never knew exactly how vast it is. On top of that hill, we could finally see the true size of the Forbidden City. Interestingly, this hill happens to be a tall mound of dirt. Have you ever dug a hole? What did you do with the soil from this hole? In fact, the hill of Jingshan Park is the mound of dirt dug from the moat of the Forbidden City. The park was the royal garden of the imperial family. Visit Coal Hill to learn about the tragic final days of the last Emperor of the Ming dynasty.

The park was lovely and peaceful. Visit in the autumn to see the glorious changes of foliage along the golden roof tiles. Come in the spring to see the blossoms and peonies take over the park. The park is just perfect in size for a nice little stroll. If you want to see the Forbidden City but are allergic to crowds, Jingshan Park is a perfect alternative.

If you are hungry for more Beijing experiences but craving Southeast Asian flavors like my grandparents, Susu, a Vietnamese restaurant, is a good compromise.

I recommend visiting Susu in one of the alleyways of the hutongs! My grandparents are visiting from Vietnam; they had recently been eating a lot of Chinese cuisine, so it would be kind to treat them with familiar flavors. The outside of Susu looked quite shabby and unimpressive. However, my grandparents were surprised that the restaurant interior was very modern and the courtyard very quaint and peaceful.

We really enjoyed eating the shaken beef with the salt and pepper dipping; the meat was so tender, and it melted! The papaya salad was tart and refreshing. My grandma ordered a stir-fried tofu, and she was very happy with this choice. For myself, I ordered bun bo, a traditional Vietnamese noodle soup.

The food was very tasty, and the ambience of the courtyard was better. Eating in the courtyard was very peaceful, and it was a perfect place to take photos. It is very surprising how a restaurant can be so scenic.

And if you think your adventure is incomplete, the Llama Temple is just a ten-minute walk away from Susu.

Tucked away just outside the Fourth Ring Road is a restaurant that’s made for the inner paleontologist in all of us. Jurassic Club 侏罗纪博物馆餐厅 runs like it’s never heard of the word copyright. It’s essentially a restaurant that’s turned itself into its own version of Jurassic Park.

Before you even walk into the restaurant, you know you’ve found the right place because you come face-to-face with a gigantic T-Rex with a burger in its mouth.

From the moment you walk in, you know that whoever owns this place is as obsessed with dinos as you are. There are giant dinosaurs all over the place and lush greenery that looks like you’re in a jungle. Life-sized T-Rex skeletons tower over the dining area, a gentle brachiosaurus peeks through the foliage, and detailed murals depict scenes from the Jurassic period. It’s a visual feast that captivates the imagination before the first course even arrives.

The restaurant masterfully balances a menu of delicious and approachable comfort food designed to please every member of the family. Think juicy burgers, crispy golden fries, hearty pastas, and pizzas that are a hit with both kids and adults.

The real treat, especially for the younger dino enthusiasts, is the restaurant’s meet and greet. Aside from their giant dinosaur installations, the restaurant also has “live” dinosaur appearances. Periodically, their resident dinosaurs come out to roam among the tables. Looking surprisingly similar to Beta from Jurassic World, the little velociraptor is always a hit, especially when you keep missing the raptor meet and greet when you visit Universal Studios.

Jurassic Club offers special birthday packages that often include a reserved “expedition site” (a private table area), a themed birthday cake, and a special visit from the dinosaurs to lead the crowd in a roaring rendition of “Happy Birthday.” Instead of traditional party games, kids are treated to an educational and exciting show about these magnificent creatures. It’s a party that will be talked about on the schoolyard for weeks to come.

There’s a certain kind of exhaustion that comes from a day spent exploring Beijing’s 798 Art District. It’s a fulfilling tiredness, born from hours of walking through industrial-chic galleries, taking in the installations and soaking in the art, creativity and heat. But as the summer sun beats down on the repurposed factory roofs, one thing becomes crystal clear: You need a haven. You need a place to sit, to recharge and to debrief on the art you’ve just seen.

For my group, that haven was Commune Reserve. By the time we made our way over, I could feel my brain melting and my skin burning. We were getting heatstroke. Forget the food; we were starting with icy cold desserts first!
Made by Vai Gelato, their pistachio (RMB 68) and mixed berries sorbet (RMB 68) were the perfect combination of thick and refreshing to cool us back down to being functional again. But since we were already starting the meal with desserts first, why not throw in a piece of their famous cheesecake as well RMB 68)?

Stepping into this Commune Reserve in 798 feels like a seamless transition from artistic spectacle to culinary comfort. The airy, industrial design pays homage to 798’s roots while offering a clean, modern and welcoming space. If you take the time to admire their interior artwork, there’s even some stuff that’ll give you a good giggle, like it did with our group.

We slid into a spacious booth, our feet grateful for the rest. The menu still has all our all-time favorites, like their Oxtail Grilled Cheese Sandwich (RMB 88), but it also now has a section that features an array of new stuff.

What struck me first, even as we perused the menu, was the atmosphere. Commune Reserve isn’t just one type of place; it’s a chameleon that perfectly adapts to its occupants. In front of us, a couple leaned in for a quiet date. On our other side, a group of friends clinked glasses and laughed as they shared plates of appetizers. And beside us, a multi-generational family happily coexisted, with grandparents sipping coffee while parents managed the joyful chaos of their little ones. And of course, there was us, a group of various ages from almost 5 to almost 50.

Here’s a major bonus for parents: Commune Reserve gets it. Before we could even dig into our bags for distractions, a server arrived with a huge coloring page and a brand new pack of crayons. It was an instant game-changer, transforming fidgety impatience into focused, quiet creativity.

And the perks don’t stop there. We learned that if you sign up for their free membership, you get a bunch of cool perks like three hours of free-flow drinks for RMB 98, discount vouchers, BOGO deals and free kids’ meals! 

Pretty soon, our table was filled with the new dishes and our classic favorites. Their Smoked Brisket Burger (RMB 98), made with Australian Angus M3+ brisket and smoked for 16 hours, was a perfect combination of sweet and savory; the Sous-Vide Beef Focaccia sandwich (RMB 78) came with unbelievable bread that shouldn’t go under-appreciated; and the Crisp Fried Pig Ears (RMB 68) with roasted potatoes, which changed textures as it cools down, made for a great drinking snack. The pig ears may sound odd, but they’re definitely a must-try. We also had a hearty portion of four giant Fried Pumpkin Mac and Cheese Balls (RMB 78). And instead of regular fries, we ordered a big portion of Lotus Root Fries (RMB 45). Although they look exactly like fries, they’ve got a crunchier texture, and we absolutely loved it. But my personal favorite has got to be the new Roasted Pumpkin & Quinoa Salad (RMB 68) with baby potatoes, buffalo mozzarella, dried cranberries and toasted pine nuts.

Then the debate began almost immediately. Was the new sandwich the undisputed champion? Or does their Oxtail Grilled Cheese Sandwich (RMB 88) still hold its title for being the family favorite? We spent a good chunk of our meal passing plates around, sampling and passionately defending our chosen dish.

We all thought we ordered the tastiest one, and it was a delicious argument with no real loser – only very happy, very full winners. All, except for one…

My daughter has an exceptionally bland palate and almost zero tolerance for spices and seasoning. To her, ground pepper is too much. So as I was picking out the jalapeños from the oxtail grilled cheese (that was originally ordered for her), I remembered the member perk: a free kids’ meal!

All you need to do is pull out the digital voucher from the mini program (once you become a member) and voilà! RMB 0! You get an option of either pizza, a burger or Fried Pumpkin Mac and Cheese Balls, and your kid gets their free meal in a matter of minutes.

The small Margherita pizza was perfect for my daughter, and the table let out a unanimous sigh of relief as we watched her devour her pizza and do her happy food dance. Whew! Now we could go back to enjoying our incredible meal guilt-free.

As we finally settled the bill, we left feeling utterly refreshed. The mental fatigue from hours of visual stimulation had been replaced by the warm contentment of a great meal and shared laughter.

Commune Reserve is more than just a restaurant in 798; it’s the final, essential exhibit. It’s where the day’s experiences are processed, where connections are strengthened, and where you refuel both body and soul, whether you’re on a romantic date, catching up with old friends or managing a family expedition.

There are restaurants with kid menus, and then there are interactive restaurants that take dining to a whole ‘nother level for kids (and fun-loving grown-ups). These unique dining establishments not only offer delicious food but also provide engaging experiences that make dining out a memorable adventure. From restaurants with live shows and performances to those with interactive games and activities, there’s something for every child to enjoy.

Royal Cuisine Museum

In recent months, performance restaurants that take you back in time to ancient China have been on the rise in cities all over the country. Dining at these restaurants is a whole different experience. At the Royal Cuisine Museum, before you’re seated at your table, you’re first taken to hair and wardrobe where you put on traditional attire and get your hair and make-up professionally done by their team. This step is usually optional and will require an additional fee, but since these performance restaurants already cost a pretty penny, why not go all out?

There are “NPC” performers who act out their role, and you’re served food from the specific time period while watching dance and theatrical performances. It’s as close to experiencing what it would have been like to be a guest of the emperor as you can possibly get.

Since these are shows and dinners, you need to go by their schedule. Be sure to arrive early so you can get pictures and really enjoy the whole experience.

Palace

Palace does something that’s very similar to Royal Cuisine Museum but focuses more on traditional dances. You’re also given the option to dress up in traditional attire before your meal and there are plenty of NPC performers for you to take photos with throughout the meal.

Here you’ll get to dine while dancers perform right in front of your long table. Palace offers two shows daily – one from 10.30am to 2pm and the other from 5.30pm to 9pm.

Tickets to the experience are RMB 398 for the regular lunch show and RMB 498 for VIP. For their dinner show, tickets are RMB 498 for the regular seating and RMB 598 for VIP. Booking is highly recommended.

Small World 

This one is fun, especially for younger kids. You’re seated in a dark room and Small World uses a video that’s projected directly onto your dining table to tell an animated story. Similar to Le Petit Chef, you get to watch characters move about your table to create each course you’ll be enjoying. When they’re done, the waiter places a real edible version in front of you to enjoy.

Since the entire place needs to run on a set time, there are specific starting times for each meal and it’s highly recommended that you book in advance.

Price range from RMB 463 per person to RMB 861 for one adult + one child. They also offer party packages available for 9-16 people for RMB 7,383.

Master of Life

Aarrgh! Want to live your best pirate life in Beijing? Well, there’s a restaurant for that! Master of Life is a pirate-themed dinner and show. You get to sit at your own private table within the main dining room (an option that’s not available at all dinner and show restaurants) and watch the actors play out their pirate adventures while dining on a tasty Western meal.

The show is from 5pm to 8.30pm daily. They do interact with the audience, but the entire show is done in Chinese.

Tickets range from RMB 191 per person for the basic seat to RMB 422 per person for the VIP section. If you’re going for a birthday celebration, you can ask them to add a bowl of longevity noodles along with birthday wishes from their NPC performer for an additional RMB 1.

This is less for the kids and more for a fancy grown-up party. While the idea is similar to Small World, there’s no video that tells the story of your meal. What you’ll get is a beautiful room that projects a variety of soothing video decors that dance and sway, adding a fun ambiance to your dinner party.

They offer everything from private dinners for two to afternoon teas for groups of friends to dinner + KTV parties. You definitely need to call in advance and communicate exactly what you’re looking for before showing up.

Commune Reserve 

It’s no secret that many of us in the jingkids editorial team love Commune Reserve. Situated behind the classy shopping district of SKP and sporting high ceilings with chic interiors, the restaurant offers one of the best burgers in town, amazing service, and also a pet-friendly patio. They’ve got craft beers on tap and a little liquor store area by the entrance where you get to purchase a bottle right before dinner.

But the place isn’t only for grownups. While they’ve got a mature vibe, their menu offers comfort food for patrons of all ages. From pizzas, lasagna, and juicy burgers to healthy salads, we had no trouble finding something that every member wanted to eat that fit all our dietary restrictions. One of their latest addition to their menu that we absolutely loved is the Wagyu beef pizza which tasted like a perfectly seasoned bolognese sauce topped with jalapeno peppers.

So for the kiddos who want juice with burgers, pizza, and chocolate cake to the ladies vibing Sex and the City with pink Cosmos to the boys who are in the mood for good beers, there’s something on the menu that’ll make everybody happy and enjoy the time together over some good comfort food.

Feast (Food by East)

This place is amazing for big group brunches with families. The kids’ playroom is one of the largest in the cit where kids can spend hours on end playing while the grown-ups enjoy the semi-buffet with free flow drinks.

For RMB 398 (or RMB 358 if you buy it from their WeChat mini program) you can spend a lazy morning there enjoying all your favorite bites. Go nuts and build your own charcuterie plate and grab a bottle of time. It’s truly one of the most relaxing places for a boozy family brunch in town.

If you’re a Beijing old timer you’ll remember what a hit Feast’s made to order Pavlovas were back in the day. Well, they’re still available and they still taste just as amazing! It has, and still is, a dessert that’s loved by patrons of all ages.

The Cowfish

This one is a bit far from the city center just for a meal, but after a day playing at Universal, stopping by The Cowfish before heading home is a great way to unwind. Located on the Universal City Walk, this restaurant has a fun decor and offers fusion sushi as well as hearty comfort foods.

There are burgers and plates of pasta as well as a wide variety of sushi rolls to choose from and kids’ set meals for the little ones for RMB88.

What makes them perfect is that while the grown-ups unwind over a cocktail and food, the kids can play the restaurant’s interactive game that lets them create their own fun fish and then watch it come to life and swim across the giant screen.
