But maybe we should leave it to the professionals.

Right before my daughter’s 100-days celebration, I attempted to give her a haircut because “it’s good luck” and “it’ll grow back in a few days.” That is, at least according to my mother-in-law and pretty much every elderly person we bumped into in our compound.

But then this happened…

My daughter ended up with a snazzy bowl cut and bald spot on the back.

You’d think I would have learned my lesson, but right before her 1st birthday, I got talked into giving her another haircut. Because if at first, you don’t succeed, try try again? Sure! Why not…

Well, this time there was no crying, but she did end up with bangs much shorter than I had intended, and well…another bowl cut.

I guess the DIY bowl cut is a rite of passage in every child’s life, but why hadn’t I thought of going to a professional!?

Like with everything baby-related, if there’s a market for it, there are more than a few businesses that cater to it in Beijing. As such, the city has plenty of hair salons specializing in new ‘dos for those as young as 6 months or so. They’re equipped with cool airplane and animal-shaped chairs, as well as cartoons to keep the kiddos entertained and a play area so they leave with a positive experience.

Check out these kid-friendly hair salons for kids ages 0-12.

Beijingkids has been an essential family resource for Beijing international families since 2006. And just as kids grow up in the blink of an eye, Beijing has grown and changed almost beyond recognition in that time. In Throwback Thursday we jump in the time machine, traveling through our 15 year-strong blog archives to dig out the most entertaining, fascinating, and thought-provoking stories for your reading pleasure. Ready? Let’s go…

So, I messed up recently. I never wanted to give my baby a haircut, but after constantly hearing about how I should shave my baby’s hair, I finally gave in and attempted a DIY haircut at home. My three months old daughter wriggled and cried and in my arms and she ended up with a shabby bowl cut with a missing chuck in the back.

I guess the DIY bowl cut is a rite of passage for every Asian kid. I certainly remember being bribed with Disney cartoons while my mom gave me bowl cuts in the kitchen as a kid, and the controllable crying when I finally looked in the mirror. I think it’s safe to say that I’m officially done playing home. Some things are better left to the professionals.

And on that note, beijingkids writer Wendy Xu compiled a list of hair salons just for kids.

For many people who had to spend fourteen days quarantined in a hotel room, a trip to the hairdresser becomes less of a ‘treat yourself pamper day’ and more like a necessity. All that time spent indoors without a window that cracks open, eating waimai, putting up with slow WiFi while the kids do e-learning and you try to stream a home workout video takes a major toll on a person, both mentally and physically.

Dymling’s fresh out of quarantine ‘before’ look

Beijing-based expat mom, Mimmie Dymling, visited Laurent Falcon after spending two full weeks in hotel quarantine with her kids. Although still beautiful, the mom of three from Sweden was definitely ready for a fresh cut to launch her into Beijing’s beautiful spring season.

Stylist Felix at work

Strolling into Laurent Falcon with a headband on, Dymling’s short pixie looked as if it indeed needed some love and tender care from a professional. Felix from Laurent Falcon is one of the stylists that expats in Beijing adore. His attention to detail and years of experience with different textures of hair has made him one of our favorites when it comes to a fabulous cut and color.

Following a trim to refresh Dymling’s pixie cut that perfectly frames her face, Felix adds a touch of that springtime vibe to her beautiful blonde locks with some highlights.

A few hours later, a day of self-pampering at Laurent Falcon has this Beijing mom looking like a rock star, ready to take on the world. Looking stunning with her new hair, Dymling shows off her new look at Taikoo Li. Finally out and free, Dymling is ready to take her family out and about and enjoy the most beautiful time in the city.

Freedom has never looked so cool

During this COVID-19 period, Laurent Falcon maintains a strict sanitation standard and each person entering the salon must have his or her temperature checked at the door. The salon’s staff wears masks at all times and it’s recommended that customers only remove masks during their haircut. Aside from the new sanitation restrictions in place, Laurent Falcon continues to be a place of pampering, serving up fresh coffee and cocktails as you relax and unwind.

Its been almost four years and my daughter never had a haircut. When I saw a discount at the fancy Catherine de France hair salon on Sunday, I thought I should take my girl. I asked my four year old plenty times before we left the house if she wanted a haircut, and if she was really sure, she was.

Surely when we got to the salon she got nervous and scared. Lucky for her there were some rocking horses and slide outside, so she could play a bit. One of the hairdressers wanted to go outside and cut her hair were she was convertible. But daughter decided that she wanted to come inside, and watch some paw patrol while getting her first haircut ever.

We discussed the haircut and the hairdresser was a star with our girl. Patient and working fast, getting rid of the dead ends with finesse. While getting her hair cut she was watching her show and was a happy camper when the hairdresser asked if she wanted a braid. The haircut cost around RMB 100 with a 10% discount on Sunday. We will be back for more hair styling as the patience was priceless.

In my previous blog I mentioned that I would perform practical yet humiliating tasks in Chinese in order to my pass my knowledge onto beijingkids readers. Without realising quite what I was getting myself into, I decided to book myself a haircut (yu ding yi ge jian fa de shi jian 预订一个 剪发的时间) with a Chinese hairdresser and place my language to the ultimate first test.

Like all things in China, the good old point-and-nod technique is good place to start for those who are a bit rickety on their Chinese-language-legs. My first and most important piece of advice: Have a photo with you of the exact haircut you want. I can’t stress that enough. A friend of mine who’s Chinese is not great made the mistake of going to a Japanese hairdresser. Between English, Japanese and Chinese translations, he ended up with a faux-hawk crossed with a mullet.

I pointed at my photo of Nicole Richie looking emaciated but with great hair, and said, “I want that style” (wo yao zhe ge yang zi 我要这个 样子).

My lovely hairdresser got it right away and proceeded to cut while talking non-stop to me in Chinese. My next piece of advice: Take any opportunity to talk with a Chinese person who’s willing to talk with you. I asked her the most mundane questions, but I was surprised how good I felt for simply making the effort. A good question to get the conversational ball rolling, “Have you been busy today?” (jin tian ni mang ma?

今天你忙吗?)

Between nodding along to a conversation I didn’t really understand, I kept hearing my hairdresser say, “Wo lu me, ni kan”. “Kan” (看) means look, but I wasn’t sure what I was supposed to be looking at. So I replied, “ Yes, wo lu me” in an effort to appear somewhat language proficient.

I had reached the blow-drying portion of the proceedings without any problems, when my hairdresser started to show me how to do my hair at home. She flipped her head upside down and began blow-drying her own hair while saying “Look! wo lu me”. All of a sudden the pieces fell together. In an effort to speak English, she’d been saying volume the whole time. In my sudden recognition, I replied ecstatically, “Ohhhh, volume! Yes, I know how to do it.” (Dui, wo zhi dao zen me zuo 对，我知道怎么做).

My first Chinese language haircut was a success. “Hao kan!” (Looks good. 好看) I exclaimed to my bubbly hairdresser and she gazed triumphantly at the volume of my previously limp hair. She did such a good job I’m now looking forward to my next appointment/Chinese lesson.
