If you’re from China or North America, you probably won’t have heard of Mike Gatting, but to the world’s two billion cricket fans he’s remembered as a fiery competitor involved in many of the game’s most exciting and controversial moments. Gatting was at Dulwich College Beijing (DCB) for the Mike Gatting Cricket Festival, an annual event encouraging Beijing’s kids to take up the game. You can read our exclusive interview with Gatting on the beijingkids website: www.beijing-kids.com

Leader of the Pack
Beijing’s very own Cub Scout Pack 3944 has a new leader. Byron Denney replaces Kenny Jackman, who has moved onto pastures new. The Pack is affiliated to Boy Scouts of America, and gives boys aged 7-10 the chance to take part in fun, character-building activities like hiking, camping, wildlife conservation, and community service. Membership is open to anyone holding a foreign (non-Chinese) passport and a valid visa. To find out more visit the Pack’s website: www.beijingcubscouts.com

Beijing Hockey Club Joins the Big League
Kunlun Redstar, Beijing’s pro team, has joined the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL), second only in prestige to North America’s NHL. KHL’s 29 teams are mainly from Russia, but there are also teams from Finland, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Latvia, Slovakia, and Croatia. The deal was signed in the presence of Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin, which gives an indication of the importance attached to developing winter sports ahead of the Beijing Winter Olympics in 2022. The season begins on August 22, and Kunlun Redstar will play their home games at the LeSports Center (formerly the Mastercard Center) in Wukesong.

Harrow Beijing Student’s Breakthrough
A Harrow International School Beijing student’s genetics research has been internationally recognized. Thatcher, a year 10 student, entered his project into the Google Science Fair global online science competition. Experts deemed it to be a Late-Breaking Clinical Trial, and worthy of showing at Rome’s European Society of Cardiology Annual Scientific Sessions in August. A stellar career surely awaits this young scientist.

Ever Get That Sinking Feeling?
You may not be imagining it. Beijing is subsiding at the rate of four inches a year, according to an international team of researchers. The reason is that we are pumping out too much groundwater, while building too many skyscrapers on top. If something isn’t done, the subsidence might affect the subway. And you thought the rush hour was bad now!

Congratulations Jess!
Our very own School Editor Jessica Suotmaa has given birth to a beautiful baby girl. Rina Jade Wang was born in Finland, weighing 3.73 kg. Mother and baby are both doing well, and the new arrival was welcomed with joy by dad Ray and big brother Jax.

Life’s a Beach at Chaoyang Park
The grandly named Chaoyang Park Ocean Beach Festival is underway once more, open until August 31. In simpler terms, this means the park’s artificial beach and outdoor swimming area are open for the summer. The beach was originally constructed for the Beach Volleyball competition at the 2008 Olympics, using sand shipped all the way from Hainan Island.

None of these activities require an electronic device just some old school fun. thestir.cafemom.com has come up with 50 cool summer activities for bored kids that can be done without parents being involved. More after the jump.

Here are some of our picks for you to try out:

Make a mini golf course with a ball and plastic cups dug into the ground.

Draw a chalk target on the fence and hold a water balloon throwing contest.

Build a backyard zip line for dolls or action figures.

This is a timeless classic, two words: papier mâché.

Make a crazy backyard or even in the house obstacle course for a family competition.

Use pens to decorate an old white t-shirt. Loser of the family obstacle course competition has to wear it to outside the house.

Parents hide all the stuffed animals outside, kids strategize and execute a rescue mission.

Create a water pistol target range. Water, summer, and kids go hand in hand together.

In the first part of this series, we looked at classic bedtime books to help build your baby’s library or that of a loved one. The baby books chosen have withstood the test of time and are still loved by many. These books can be found in douban.com under the books section with the only drawback being that the site is in Chinese. But searching for the titles in English will still yield the book results. Here is a look at another five classic books.

Corduroy by Don Freeman

Poor Corduroy! Why won’t anyone buy him? Could it be because his overalls are missing a button? Late at night the teddy bear searches the store for his button. He never finds it, but he does find a girl who loves him and gives him a home.

Heartwarming and humorous, this is a picture-book classic. The illustrations are bold, bright, and highly appealing. The story speaks to many themes, including friendship, courage, and hope.

Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed by Eileen Christelow

This book is a fun, amusing story about the bedtime rituals of five monkeys and their mama. The monkeys diligently complete ordinary bedtime tasks such as taking a bath, brushing their teeth and putting on their pajamas. At this point, one may be led to believe that the “obedient” monkeys are ready to go to sleep, but these five little monkeys have plans of their own.

As their mama shuts their bedroom door, the silly monkeys start jumping on their bed. Wouldn’t you know it – one monkey falls down and bumps his head. Mama is forced to call the doctor, who instructs the monkeys, “No more monkeys jumping on the bed.” Will the remaining monkeys listen to the doctor’s order? The catchy tale repeats itself as the number of monkeys left in bed dwindles and the doctors orders become more adamant: “NO MORE MONKEYS JUMPING ON THE BED.” Before you know it, all five monkeys are injured, and they finally decide to settle down for the evening. Now mama can finally go to sleep herself…or perhaps, she decides, have some fun of her own.

Adults and children alike will look forward to reading this board book over and over again. The illustrations brilliantly bring the story to life. The expressions on the monkeys’ faces make readers laugh out loud as they change from innocent to silly and mischievous. Don’t be surprised if you find yourself joining in on the fun by jumping on your own bed. The one thing this book is missing is a warning: This book will not encourage children to settle down for bedtime!

Review sourced from Curled Up With a Good Kids Book

Gossie byOlivier Dunrea

Gossie is a little golden yellow gosling who “likes to wear bright red boots.” Gossie loves her boots so much that she wears them all the time. Whether she is eating, sleeping, playing, or walking, Gossie always wears her beloved boots.

Then, one morning, she wakes up to discover that her boots are missing. They are not under the hens, or in the barn, or under her bed. They are nowhere to be found and Gossie is quite “heartbroken” at her loss. Then she sees something quite extraordinary and Gossie’s world changes a great deal – for the better.

There is no doubt that Gossie the gosling is one of the funniest and sweetest bird characters around. Even though she is very small, Olivier Dunrea manages to give Gossie a surprising amount of character and expression. With minimal backgrounds and delicate touches of color and detail, Olivier Dunrea puts his wonderful gosling in the limelight – which is just where she should be.

Little children will grow to love this little bird, and will certainly want to read more of her books in the future.

Review sourced from Through The Looking Glass Children’s Book Reviews

In the Tall, Tall Grass by Denise Fleming

If you were a fuzzy caterpillar crawling through the tall, tall grass on a sunny afternoon, what would you see? Beginning, as the sun is high in the sky and ending as fireflies blink and the moon rises above, this backyard tour is one no child will want to miss.

Singling out the "array of vibrant verbs and boisterous onomatopeia" and the "kaleidoscope effect" of the textured paper collages, PW called Caldecott Honor artist Fleming’s caterpillar safari "ideal for sharing with young explorers."

Description and editorial review sourced from amazon

Are You My Mother? By P.D. Eastman

I want my mother! Will the gritty determination of a very tiny bird win the day? Readers love the suspense and the hilarious conclusion, as a newly hatched baby bird begins a quest to find his mother. Uproarious illustrations complement the comical tale, providing giggles galore for young readers.

Parents need to know that readers eagerly anticipate the baby bird’s next move. Basic language and humorous illustrations keep the tale’s tone light.

The beginning of the new school year has already started for some while the other lot waits patiently to start next week. Educational apps can help get kids in the right frame of mind for school in an exciting graphical way but most importantly learn something new.
As many of you may know, today, January 23, 2012 marks the start of the year of the dragon. Here are some interesting facts about the year of the dragon and Chinese dragon mythology:

1) The dragon is the only virtual animal among the 12 Chinese zodiac animals.

2) People born in the year of dragon are said to be strong and ambitious; therefore, there is an expected increase in births this year for “dragon babies.” The dragon is roughly equivalent to the Western zodiac sign Aries.

3) In relation to other signs, dragons are compatible with chicken and bulls, but not with tigers, monkeys, and pigs.

4) In 1976, a dragon year, two major events occurred: the Tangshan earthquake and the death of Mao Zedong.

5) Chinese dragon is actually a combination of nine animals: the horns of a deer, the ears of a bull, the head of a camel, the eyes of a rabbit, the neck of a snake, the scales of a fish, the feet of a tiger, the belly of a clam, and the claws of an eagle.

6) According to Chinese legend, the dragon has nine sons, none of which are dragons. Each of the sons has distinctive characteristics. Read about them here.

7) There are five types of dragons in Chinese mythology: ones that guard the gods and emperors, ones that control wind and rain, ones that create rivers and seas, ones that guard hidden treasure and the first dragon (whose waking, sleeping and breathing determine day and night).

8) China was first united in a dragon year during the Qin dynasty.

9) In the past, only the emperor could use the imagery of a five-clawed dragon – on his robes or illustrations he owned. If anyone else wore a five-clawed dragon design, they were put to death. Five claws, as opposed to four, was considered a symbol of power.

10) Those born in the year of dragon should wear red underwear all year for 2012 – to bring good luck.

Happy Year of the Dragon!

While shopping at the grocery store in the basement of the Ito Yokado (Hua Tang) department store at the corner of Wangjing Lu and Jingmi Lu in Wangjing, we discovered that the Tous Les Jours bakery inside the grocery store has a DIY Mooncakes table. For RMB 24 for two mooncakes or RMB 38 for four, kids (or adults) can try their hand at making their own mooncakes. The entire process took about thirty minutes and half of that was baking time which we used to do our shopping. The DIY table is only scheduled for two more dates: 10 and 12 September from 11am-5pm. According to the staff, this is the only Tous Les Jours bakery location with the DIY mooncakes.

As for the results, my wife and daughter took the mooncakes to a Chinese friend’s house for a play date and neither the children nor the adults cared for the mooncakes, but Reina did enjoy making them. So take the kids to Tous Les Jours for the DIY experience and then go buy the Haagen-Dazs ice cream mooncakes for consumption. You’ll be glad you did on both counts.

Our television viewing habits changed drastically when we moved here. No longer equipped with a DVR to record the all-too-important-to-miss programs, nor the ridiculous amount of programming options to choose from, we simply stopped watching TV. And with two young kids, this wasn’t/isn’t at all a bad thing.

We’ve adjusted just fine, for the most part. My husband might occasionally miss varied news options or sports-on-demand, and I might miss some favorite drama series. Instead, our few available channels now show the same programs over and over again, from old series to a crazy amount of reality programs.

The latter has kind of become a guilty pleasure of mine, I admit, from “Junior MasterChef Australia” to “American Idol.” But the latest on the scene – and not a favorite, I should add – is “True Beauty.” Wow, how shallow. Actually, now it’s “True Beauty 2” – don’t know how I could’ve missed the first one. This show features men and women who believe they are competing to be Mr. or Ms. Face of Las Vegas — the most beautiful person on the outside to represent Sin City. They are vain and outrageous and just unbelievable to watch. Of course, the “surprise” factor is that hidden cameras are around, always watching their “inner beauty” moments. There are challenges, final straw moments and ultimately the reveal (to the loser of the week) about how they may not be as beautiful as they believe.

The judges are as stiff and poorly scripted, perhaps, as the contestants. And I can’t help but wonder how many seasons this series can actually continue without everyone knowing the trick behind it beforehand.

It’s on TV now (at least as I write this blog). I should be asleep and I will so regret staying up when the morning alarm clock beeps. But I’m watching this ridiculous program, all the while trying to justify doing so by being gently reminded that inner beauty is really what matters, what we should all strive to have.

Um, ok. Maybe that no TV option should be revisited. Soon.

What’s hairy, red, and eats sea cucumber?

The answer: a 1.5 million dollar dog.

Little Splash, a 11-month Red Tibetan Mastiff, has made record by becoming the world’s most expensive pooch.

And who would pay such an extravagant sum for a dog? A northern Chinese coal baron, of course.

Although the price sounds crazy, the unnamed buyer was quoted saying that the puppy is a good investment. Breeding could turn a high profit, as Little Splash is ‘a perfect specimen’ according to Lu Liang, the dog’s breeder.

Little Splash could not be reached to comment, but we like to think that it would say that it ‘just wants to be loved’ and doesn’t like being seen as ‘a dollar doggy’.

Pampered from birth, the dog already weighs 180 pounds and is fed a steady diet of chicken and beef seasoned with sea cucumber and abalone.

Other most expensive dogs? Here’s an article.

What about cats?
