By the start of fall, many families in Beijing, new or old alike, will have settled almost everything, from relocation or returning from their summer holidays to the preparations for the new school year. With all that out of the way, they can take a breather and can start considering adopting pets. Adding one of these furry fellows to the family is a big commitment, and there are major issues to take into consideration. Should this put you off? Not if you’re able to offer a forever loving home to these adorable rescued animals.

Please adopt, don’t shop!

Adopting a pet in Beijing is easy and if you’re considering it, check out our Pet of the Week series, courtesy of our content partners from the International Center for Veterinary Services (see more of their Adoptable Pets here). Alternatively, there are several WeChat groups that post announcements on pet rescues and funding for pet homes. Animals from these organizations, rescue volunteers, and owners are usually healthy with good temperaments.

Not ready to adopt? Please foster!

– Foster families are the critical factor in helping stray/rescued animals find their forever homes. Most rescued pets just need some time to live in a loving home to become socialized and to build trust with humans, increasing their chances of adoption.

– If keeping a pet permanently is not possible, then fostering for a few weeks or a few months or more can give you the loving companionship of a pet while helping him/her find a forever family.

Adopters, Beware…

– Breeding is a very new and largely unregulated industry in China. In the local market, pets for sale are bred for profit, meaning the animals are mated to produce many litters quickly. The puppies and kittens are usually weaned too early from their mothers and sold well before six weeks of age. The faster the animals are sold, the higher the turnover and more profit for the sellers.

– Inbreeding is a serious problem as breeders may have brought only a few breed-specific animals into the market, which were used to create multiple generations of pets for sale. Inbreeding may result in life-long health or behavioral issues that may not become apparent until the animal is older.

– A high percentage of purchased pets may have serious health issues or infectious diseases requiring extensive treatment and hospitalization (e.g., canine or feline distemper virus, parvovirus, coronavirus, feline infectious peritonitis, upper respiratory infection, gastrointestinal illness, skin infections, etc.).Once purchased, breeders will not refund the money even if the animal is sick or dies. A replacement animal may be offered for the deceased pet, which may also have health issues. Each purchase of an animal supports the pets-for-profit industry (like puppy and kitten mills), and reduces the chances of an existing animal finding an adoptive home.

There are officially designated animal rabies vaccination hospitals.

– Please ensure your pets are vaccinated at a legally registered and officially designated animal rabies vaccination hospitals in China.

– Only officially designated animal vaccination hospitals are permitted to procure legally registered and safe vaccines through the official government agency – the Agricultural Bureau, which imports legally registered, international rabies and distemper vaccines manufactured in Europe and North America.

– Only officially licensed and designated animal vaccination hospitals are allowed to purchase and administer legal animal vaccines in Beijing.

– Pet shops, grooming salons, boarding kennels, pet relocation agents, pet supplies retailers, animal sales markets, breeders, shelters and even many pet hospitals and clinics are not permitted to purchase safe and legally procured rabies and other vaccines. These facilities that do not have the official animal rabies vaccination hospital designation can only source vaccines from the black markets, which are unsafe and may be counterfeit, illegally smuggled, expired or improperly stored and ineffective. These create a risk for pets, their families, and the community.

– Please check your animal hospital to ensure it is an officially designated animal rabies vaccination hospital. Officially designated animal rabies vaccination hospitals must display a gold plaque awarded by the Agricultural Bureau featuring the hospital’s “Rabies Vaccination License Number”

– Note that vaccinations are required annually for pets in China. China does not recognize the 3-year vaccinations from US/Canada, EU, and other countries.

Register your dogs. It’s the law!

– All dogs must be registered by law and you may register one dog per household address. An unlicensed or unregistered dog is legally classified as a stray and may be taken away by the Public Security Bureau at any time.

– Large dogs may be registered outside the Fifth Ring Road. Check with your local Public Security Bureau precinct (police station) to confirm if large dogs are allowed (see more about the Beijing dog ownership regulations here).

Give pets only safe pet foods.

– Please use only legally registered, State Food & Drug Administration (SFDA)-approved pet foods in China. There are many illegally smuggled foods circulating in retail stores and through online vendors, and you should know that product recalls are not issued by manufacturers in countries where they do not officially sell their products.

It’s never too early to prepare for relocation.

– Whether you brought your pet to China or you adopted a pet locally, it is NEVER too early to learn the requirements to take your pet with you when the time comes to relocate. Some destination territories (like the EU, the UK, the UAE, Japan, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, among others) require preparation lead times of 4-8 months before pets may be imported from China. ICVS conducts free monthly information sessions about pet relocation.

Rejoice, all ye dog lovers, as today (Aug 26) is when we celebrate a special occasion reserved to Man’s Best Friend – Dog Appreciation Day.

Dog Appreciation Day, also called as Dog Day (not to be confused with the dog days of summer, but this unofficial holiday happens in the summer as well), was first held in 2004 to honor dogs for all the things they do for us – by being always there when we need companions, or just by being cute and lovely. This unofficial holiday also aims to raise awareness that many dogs, as well as other animals, are left homeless and need help.

In Beijing, there are several community groups on WeChat that share information about stray dogs that need rescue, as well as organizations that look for volunteers to help with finding foster families or temporary shelters. Most of these abandoned animals lie beyond Beijing’s dense business and residential districts and further outside the Fourth Ring Road.

Our friends from the International Center for Veterinary Services run one of the facilities in town that help with animal rescues. ICVS treats these poor little fellows until they are ready to be adopted by a forever loving family. Here are some of the puppies waiting for their new best friends – it might be you or your family!

Click/tap the names of the puppies to see more details about how you can adopt them.

Feifei (8 months old, medium-sized mutt)
A local rescuer took Feifei to vets after seeing a WeChat message which showed the homeless puppy with bad injuries and unable to stand or walk. One month later, the rescuer moved Feifei to a foster family. He has recovered very well and is getting stronger day by day.
Medical notes: Feifei is fully dewormed and vaccinated.

Puppy (7 months old, large breed)
Puppy was brought to ICVS where he was treated for a skin infection. He has since recovered and is very healthy, loving, sweet, and affectionate! Since Puppy is a large breed dog, he needs to live outside the Fifth Ring Road where he can be legally registered. He would love a backyard so he can run around for exercise.
Medical notes: Puppy is a healthy male dog and has been vaccinated and dewormed.

Xiao Bai (around 1 year old, small breed)
Sweet and friendly little Xiao Bai was brought to ICVS by a rescuer. Xiao Bai had been living in Fragrant Hills and been fed by the local residents. She is very friendly and loving.
Medical notes: Xiao Bai is fully vaccinated, dewormed, treated for fleas/ticks and already spayed by ICVS.

Ginger (1 year, 8 months old, small breed)
Ginger was born in an empty field in Shunyi in Dec 2016. A local rescuer took him and his siblings in, and found him a nice Chinese foster family in Aug 2017. After 9 happy months, the family moved to Australia and gave Ginger back to the rescuer. Now Ginger is living in a boarding facility and is ready for his forever adoption family.
Medical notes: Ginger is fully dewormed, vaccinated and neutered.

While it’s fairly easy to adopt a pet in our home countries, sadly doing so here in Beijing requires more than our innate love for animals. Expect bureaucracy everywhere – from the landlords to the authorities – and that’s only one part of the deal.

I’m an ardent believer that pets are our lifelong family members. That being said, adopting (and not buying, please) a pet is a long-term commitment and should be a major consideration for your plans during your stay in China.

We asked our friends from the International Center for Veterinary Services (ICVS) about their ideas on adopting pets in Beijing and we’ve summarized them in this checklist for you, soon-to-be-loving-and-very-loyal foster parent!

Adopting a pet is a long-term commitment!

– Know that cats can live over 20 years; dogs 15-18+ years; rabbits can live 8-10 years.
– What’s your lifestyle like? Do you always go out at night, or travel over the weekend?
– Consider your outdoor and indoor living space.
– Cats and small dogs? They’re better suited for apartment living.
– Medium and larger dogs? Remember there are regulations and size restrictions, as well as a need for a larger space to run.

Purebreds

– Research first about the breed and consult a veterinarian.
– Important info: temperament, size, exercise needs, and potential breed-specific health concerns.
– Mix-breeds may be healthier and require less inbreeding; they might have fewer breed-specific and congenital issues.

Puppies/kittens vs. adult dogs/cats

– What’s your time commitment for housebreaking, training, exercise, vaccination series, deworming, neutering/spaying?
– Many adults waiting for adoption are usually housebroken, already neutered/spayed, and more settled.

Pet markets

– Common breeds: Pekinese, Pomeranians, Chihuahuas, Bichon Frise, Cocker Spaniels, Beagles, Poodles, Mini Schnauzers, Golden retrievers, Labrador retrievers, Samoyeds, Huskies, Border Collies, Chow-chows.

Adopters, beware of the following:

– Animals sold in pet markets are often prematurely weaned and have weakened immune systems.
– They often have inadequate vaccination, using an improper schedule or ineffective vaccines, so watch out for common infectious diseases, especially kennel cough, parvovirus, distemper virus, parasites (fleas, mange, gastrointestinal worms, giardia).
– Warning signs: overly thin and/or potbellied; discharge from the eyes or nose; sneezing and coughing; thin and/or dull hair coat and hair loss.
– Apparently healthy puppies/kittens should be quarantined for 3 weeks away from other pets in home prior to introductions.
– Post-adoption: veterinary exam, testing for infectious diseases, start vaccination series, stool check
– New kittens/cats should also be feline leukemia virus (FeLV)/feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) tested
– Neuter/spay the pets after a vaccination series is completed (4-6 months of age)

Taking your pet overseas

– Adopting a pet is a commitment for life. It is not difficult to take pets out of China to most overseas countries, but be prepared to shell out money to do so.
– Proper research and preparation are necessary to ensure a smooth relocation with pets. We’ve written a guide when it’s time to make the big move from Beijing with pets (read it here).

Many animals out there are also suffering from the relentless warmth and humidity and mind you, these little fellows can also experience heat stroke without us even knowing!

So if you’re wanting to take your pet outside (or maybe stay indoors), remember these tips to keep them happy and healthy this hot season.

1. Hydrate your pets. But remember: use a bowl that doesn’t get too warm even if put outdoors. Glass bowls have a tendency to break, while metal ones will get very hot and might injure your pet’s tongue.

2. As much as possible, don’t let your pets walk on asphalt, especially during the hottest times of the day (10am-4pm). Asphalt traps heat and pavements get baked under the sun, so however thick their paws may appear, the intense heat will hurt their feet.

3. We need to bring our pets out to play and exercise, but do these activities in the morning or late afternoons so that they’ll not exhaust their energy. In the case of an extremely hot day, you can opt for indoor games with toys.

4. Be on the lookout for symptoms of animal heat stroke. According to the International Center for Veterinary Services (ICVS), some easily identifiable symptoms of heat stroke are vomiting, difficulty breathing, rapid breathing, seizures and inability to walk. When left untreated, animal heat stroke can cause complications to their organs, particularly the heart and lungs, and can also cause tissue damage and degeneration.

5. However cute animal clothing can be, it’s better to not dress them this season because clothes can retain external and body heat, especially when our little friends have thick fur. Aside from that, take note that animals with short snouts (like pit bulls) cannot dissipate heat effectively, so adding clothing will make them pant more.

We’re lucky here in Beijing because we don’t see many stray animals. But in the unlikely event that you see a stray, make sure to report it to ICVS so that they can tell the authorities to rescue these animals. Strays are usually feral, and however we want to help them stay cool during a warm spell, it’ll be dangerous as they might be carriers of diseases like rabies.

Background: Beautiful kitten Camilla was rescued in December from a compound in Sanlitun along with her brother Cavour. They have been living with a foster family and are both friendly and socialized.

Personality: Camilla is a sweet kitten, natural leader, easy going with other cats. She has not had any experience with dogs yet. She is still a bit shy and would need a patient family but she is comfortable around people, and eats from the hand. She is independent but enjoys and seeks company. She likes playing and she eats very well.

Ideal home: Camilla would be very happy with an individual, a couple or a family with older children (8 yrs. or older). She enjoys the company of other cats, so ideally she would be adopted with her brother Cavour or by a family with another cat.

Sex, age and breed: Six-months old female, long haired ginger tabby.

Medical notes: Camilla is healthy and is already fully vaccinated, dewormed, microchipped and spayed.

Post-adoption care: The International Center for Veterinary Services (ICVS) has enrolled Camilla into their Rescued/Stray/Rehomed Pet Adoption Benefits Program. ICVS will provide her new family with significant discounts (up to 50%) on her vaccinations, accompanying examinations and spay surgery during her first year of life with her new adoptive family.

Annual Vaccination Packages: ICVS has wonderful wellness and annual vaccination packages to keep Camilla healthy and free of parasites, fleas, and ticks. All of the vaccinations I need every year are included and the packages are discounted by 40-50 percent!

Official Vaccination Certificate: With rabies vaccination, ICVS will issue Camilla’s new family the official Beijing Animal Health and Immunity Certificate (e.g., vaccination red book) at no charge. She needs the official vaccination red book to prove she has been legally and properly rabies vaccinated to move to another city or to leave China with her new family.

Pet Import/Export Counselling: ICVS will provide Camilla’s family with unlimited relocation counseling and accurate information to take her with them when it is time to move to another city or to another country.

Door-to-Door Pet Transport Service: ICVS can help Camilla’s new family arrange for door-to-door car transport for her appointments at the hospital.
