Another successful 2019 Jingkids International School Expo (JISE), Beijing is in the books! With 4,000 families (over 8,000 people in attendance) throughout the weekend, visiting exhibitors from all levels of academic learning, and forums with topics ranging from curriculum talks, innovative education, and student mental health, the weekend also culminated with our first ever JISE Youth Entrepreneurship Competition.

Hosting this massive event at Kerry Hotel made our two-day expo even more attractive with great supplementary family-friendly activities and great dining outlets.

With families spread out across the main ballroom dedicated to K-12 schools and early learning organizations at Kerry Sports, it made for a stress-free atmosphere with highly focused interactions, creating numerous high-quality leads for our exhibitors.

The second day started with a very informative lecture with David Shinkfield (Headmaster of Harrow Beijing), Richard Thornhill (Principal of British School of Beijing (BSB) Shunyi), and Antonio Flores (Director of Curriculum and Professional Development at Beijing Huijia Private School), giving participants a detailed explanation of their respective curricula.

While the growing number of curricula making their way to Beijing can turn into an alphabet soup at times, there are tried and tested models found locally and around the world that parents need to be considering when picking a school.

Parents learned that while there were many inherent similarities between IB, IGCSE, and the following A-Levels, the differences were very much in the details on how these curricula adapt to suit the needs of the individual school and Beijing’s diverse international student body.

Day two of JISE 2019 was also the final day of the JISE Youth Entrepreneurship Competition hosted by Venture Education and Techtrek. Ten high school teams pitched their entrepreneurial ideas about ways to overcome the emergence of AI through creative and economically sustainable business models.

A group of five students from Dulwich College Beijing and their app that hopes to drive creativity and the arts in rural China and beyond took home the grand prize of RMB 5,000. All of the students went home with not only an award but also a considerable amount of experience gained through meeting and hearing lectures from seasoned entrepreneurs.

JISE 2019 Beijing – Day Two Highlights

Without further ado, here is some photographic evidence of our exhibitors, attendees, speakers, and everything else that made the weekend a huge success.

From the bottom of our hearts, we would like to thank everyone who came out to JISE 2019, and we hope that the weekend was a valuable and informative experience for you and your family. Moving forward, we at beijingkids will continue to be your Beijing guide for going “beyond school choice” and into a never-ending journey towards a life filled with academic and personal fulfillment.

How would you like to enhance your teen’s preparedness for the world of the future?

One step in the right direction is to sign up for the upcoming JISE Youth Entrepreneurship Competition. No experience is necessary for the free, one-day workshop-slash-competition: your teen will learn all they need on the day of the event. The Middle School workshop will be held February 23, while the High School workshop will be held Feb 24.

We’ve got a slate of teams already enrolled from schools such as CISB, BCIS, Huijia, Dulwich, WAB, Keystone and YCIS, but have space for a few more. Monday (Jan 28) is the second round application deadline – few if any spots will be left after that date! Register for free here.

The event, to take place Feb 23-24 at the Kerry Hotel as part of the Jingkids International School Expo, is conducted in English and is open to teams of five who are currently enrolled at any Beijing school.

There are two divisions: Middle Schoolers (Grade 6-8, with the workshop happening Saturday, Feb 23) and High Schoolers (Grade 9-12, with the workshop happening Sunday, Feb 24).

This event is not only a competition but also a great learning opportunity for middle schoolers and high schoolers who want to develop skills that the World Economic Forum have declared to be in high demand for the workplace of the future:

Analytical thinking and innovation

Creativity, originality and initiative

Critical thinking and analysis

Complex problem-solving

Reasoning, problem-solving and ideation

Professional facilitators from Venture Education (a social enterprise that empowers students through entrepreneurship education) and Techtrek (a company that helps young learners develop the tech skills they need to thrive in the modern world) will coach teams on site on how to develop an idea into a sellable pitch, all in one day.

Successful Beijing entrepreneurs will be on hand throughout the day to guide students through the process. The day concludes with short three minute pitches to a panel of real-life entrepreneurs, to be followed by an awards ceremony with RMB 38,000 in prizes up for grabs.

Entry is free and no preparation is necessary – all you need to bring is your open mind and a team of five from your school.

Interested? We will continue to enroll teams (no deadline) until we get closer to the capacity of 20 teams per division

Participation is free and no experience is necessary – you just need to be a middle or high school student currently enrolled at a Beijing school and form a team of five. The event is held in English so fluency is a must.

Best yet, there are RMB 38,000 in cash and prizes up for grabs – so you’ll not only learn and grow, you’ll walk away with tangible rewards for your efforts.

Administered by professionals and coached and judged by real-life Beijing-based entrepreneurs, the contest is one part of the Jing International School Expo that takes place at the Kerry Hotel on Feb 23-24, 2019.

The top team in each division will receive RMB 5,000 in cash and prizes; the second will receive RMB 3,000, and the third RMB 1,000. All other teams will receive RMB 500 in cash and prizes.

Middle Schoolers (6th, 7th, and 8th graders) will have their workshop at Kerry Hotel on Saturday, Feb 23, while high schoolers will meet the next day, Sunday Feb 24.

Each day starts with an introduction and a challenge, and then moves on to a full morning of learning and brainstorming.

After a break for lunch, students return to hone their idea down to a three-minute pitch. Along the way we’ll have not only professional facilitators but also Beijing-based entrepreneurs on hand to help guide students.

The day concludes in the mid-afternoon with each team making their pitch in front a panel of entrepreneurs, who will rate the students on the basis of clearly-communicated criteria circulated in advance.

Finally, all participants will gather for an awards ceremony (parents, teachers, friends and school administrators welcome) where the winners will be declared and feedback will be offered to each team.
