Lido restaurant Ramo — one of Beijing’s most popular spots for pizza, pasta, brunch, and other comfort food — suddenly announced its closure today (Friday, Dec 28) via a WeChat post. The news will be all the more disappointing for fans because its recent relocation to the relatively stable Lido seemed like a surefire bet to stave off such a shock shuttering.

The Lido restaurant boasted a flashy, boldly fun ambiance

Owner Paca Lee opened Ramo’s first incarnation in 2014 at Fangjia Hutong, a former magnet for foodies and party goers in Dongcheng, at least until 2017. After that, the alley became notorious as ground zero for Beijing’s Great Brickening renovation campaign, which left many small businesses decimated.

Read: Fate of Fangjia Hangouts Unclear at the Height of the Great Brickening

Lee opened Ramo 2.0 in Lido within a few months of Fangjia’s gentrification, much to the surprise of foodies and the capital’s F&B industry. After all, Lido is a comparatively sleepy neighborhood, where many upwardly mobile Chinese and well-to-do expats with families dwell. It was certainly a far cry from the lively drinking and dining hotspot that Fangjia was in its heyday.

The new Lido location was more family friendly than its predecessor

Nevertheless, many felt that Lee pulled off the change with aplomb, opening a far bigger restaurant painted in bold bright colors that not only appealed to Lido families with its ball pit replete play area but also lived up to its predecessor’s party rep with a stylish upstairs bar.

Lee and her team admitted in the closing announcement that the past year “has been a tough one for us” but stressed that they nevertheless “have shared tons… of joy and laughter, and we wish that Ramo would always exist in your memories as an oasis of good food.”

The restaurant’s team ended that statement with an admission that is sure to dismay Ramo diehards all the more: “At this moment, we are not certain of our next move yet [but]we are surely looking forward to seeing you soon again!”

Finding a spot that makes families happy is important. It can be hard to strike a balance between what the kids like, and what the parents like. But Ramo has it down, the ultimate happy place for families in the Lido area.

Ramo used to be a hip hutong joint, catering to the young and glamorous, the ragazzi moderni. Now, like their customers, they’re all grown up and moved out to the ‘burbs. Their Lido location has a family-friendly section downstairs, with a kids’ area, and swish nightlife with cocktails and more upstairs. From swing dance and yoga to kid’s parties, Ramo has something for everybody.

On a beautiful day, we take Tess van Damme from the Netherlands, to sample Ramo’s family-friendly menu. Tess is 8 years old and is in Year 4 at The British School of Beijing, Sanlitun. She and her parents have been in Beijing for six years. Tess has a great love of music, dancing, and gymnastics, and is part of the performance choir this year.

Nobody is too old to roll around in the ball pit and make use of the coloring table in the kids’ area. This section has underfloor heating, which is good news with winter approaching. Ramo also cares about fresh air, and has an air filtration system in place. There are many baby chairs and baby changing table, and the washbasins upstairs even have a lower one for kids to reach. Those concerned about food safety will be happy to know that there are cameras in the kitchen that live stream to a screen in the restaurant.

The food is comforting, but still has a few surprises for us. We start off with fresh fruit; watermelon paired with rosemary is a hit with Tess. Paca Lee, the owner and “face” of Ramo, brings us several dishes from the menu, including breakfast pizza (RMB 78), loaded with egg, bacon, and homemade sausage (there’s also onion and rocket, to balance all the protein.) That’s devoured in a twinkling. Next comes a veggie and hummus platter (RMB 65). Ramo has the right idea here – hummus is the king of dips for kids and adults, both healthy and irresistible. The ribs with fries (RMB 158) have a spicy kick, which Tess enjoys but most likely make them unsuitable for very small kids.

Ramo has several kids’ menu items, like pasta (RMB 68), scrambled eggs (RMB 68), and pizza (RMB 68-78), but the adult dishes are mostly suitable for sharing with the little ones too. But when it comes to their range of delicious desserts, including white chocolate mousse with berry ice cream (RMB 48) and Nutella panzerotti (RMB 38), you might want to get the kids their own, so you can have yours all to yourself. After all, grown-ups deserve a bit of fun too.

Ramo
Sun-Thu 10am-11.30pm, Fri-Sat 10am-1am, kitchen closes at 11pm. 9-2 Jiangtai West Road, Chaoyang District 朝阳区将台西路9-2号

I had a feeling Lido was getting cool when I decided to move there. Soon after, I received the news that Ramo opened a new venue very close to my new home. My four year old and I ran all the way over to check out the dining new venue.

I might see it as an omen that I will be coming more than once to Ramo as the decorations are truly my style. Yellow and blue is a great combination. Ramo makes it very special for families as they have added an entire play area that features a ball pit and coloring corner. All of our favorite things in one place.

The new menu does not disappoint. We ordered pizza and several other bites, and from the kid’s menu, my daughter chose the breakfast for dinner. After our meal, we had to try both desserts to make sure they were up to par. The chocolate brownie with vanilla ice cream was a huge hit. Friday afternoon calls for some drinks, so I savored an Aperol Sprits and watched my daughter roll around in the ball bit for a while. I might or might not have joined her at some point.
Ramo has air purifiers built into the restaurant’s AC so no sweat on high AQI days. The bathroom also has a baby changing table and a sink that is reachable for small kids.

Ramo is both dog and family friendly. I am excited to be moving so close to this quality pizza joint and can’t wait to have more Friday afternoons rolling through the ball pit. Head over quick to get 20% off your food bill during the soft opening. Ramo opening hours are from 11 am to 11 pm, and it is located across from 3E international school.

The fear of public hutong bathrooms is enough to keep me in my safe Sanlitun bubble, but there is fun stuff in the hutongs, and last week I took my daughter to the Rumble in the Jumble market at Hot Cat. I wanted to take her out for a bit of lunch somewhere, and the restaurant Ramo was suggested to me.

We entered a colorful establishment, and it looked sturdy enough for a four-year-old. The menu has different options from breakfasts to salads, flatbread, and pizza. The pizza can be served by the slice which is great as I did not feel like pizza, but my daughter did. She can’t devour a whole pizza by herself yet, so the two slices were perfect for her small belly.

I had a flatbread with hummus to share with my daughter, and it was surprisingly good, smeared with hummus, pickles, and onions over roasted tomatoes. Then we both devoured a portion of poutine. I never had this special Canadian dish, so I decided to indulge myself while on our hutong adventure.

Poutine is a dish of french fries topped with cheese curds, and brown gravy. This belly warming dish hails from Quebec and is found all around Canada at diners; there are even whole restaurants themed around this dish.

Ramo has a toilet on-site which is a big plus in my book. You order at the counter, and they deliver the food to your table. I found the food was priced reasonably and would take my toddler back for some hummus flatbread for sure. Are there any other places you like to visit with kids in the hutongs? Please let us know by commenting at the bottom or by WeChat.

You heard us, plaster casts, courtesy of BodyMemory Clinic.

For those of you not in the know BodyMemory is the work of a local designer, Yi Zhou. She goes around to various venues dressed in OR scrubs making casts of various body parts, mainly fingers, lips, ears, and noses so that you can give them away as gifts, or turn them into anatomically correct jewelry. On this particular day, they will be focusing on taking casts of your furry friends so that you can make them into unique pieces of jewelry (i.e., necklaces and brooches) or other decorative objects. This is a great activity the whole family can enjoy, especially if you or your kids have any interest in forensic sciences.

Here’s how it works, and we assure you that it’s a quite painless and humane process that only takes about five minutes to complete, depending on how excitable or timid your pet is. Extract the QR code from the poster above to sign up for the service, and send your name, phone number, as well as a date and time you would like to make your appointment. This procedure consists mainly of placing the animal’s paw in the special molding substance. When it dries up, you are done, but you will need to wait a week for the doctor on duty to make the special cast at her secret underground laboratory. Jewelry services are also available if you wish to add a little bling to the object or plate it in gold.

To round out the experience, Penny’s Food Studio will be on site making delicious treats for your cats and dogs as their little extremities get immortalized in plaster. They are experts in crafting family quality food for dogs and cats. Even our little yappy companions need a little delicious pampering every once in a while.

As usual, Ramo provides a little something for everyone. While your pets are chowing down on luxurious handmade treats of their own, there will be pizza, a special on hotdogs, and other comfort foods for humans. So, get on down to the hutongs and experience this unique pop-up of interspecies delights. Check out the event listing here for more details.

Feeling confused? Yes, we all know that Pokémon Go virtual reality is still not available in China, but why not have fun with your friends and family, trying to catch them in our world?

This Saturday, July 23, following the overall boom in Pokémons, Ramo Restaurant & Bar is holding a party where everyone gets a chance to catch his own Pokémon in real life, and meet people who are also obsessed (in the best way) with these small colorful creatures. It won’t be so easy though: all the figurines will be hidden in random places, and those who manage to hunt down and take a picture of them will get a special prize: a homemade Pikachu Popsicle, together with the status of Pokémon master. Also, the same is promised to visitors in Pokémon-styled gear – so be prepared for fun photos.

Ramo is a pizza bar and restaurant located in a hutongs area. So far, it has already gained the love of locals, attracting customers with good prices and tasty pizzas. The place is welcoming to visitors with kids and animals. Dogs are allowed to come inside the restaurant (just in case you’re worried about the rain), and there is plenty of outdoor seating as well.

The event is super family friendly. Kids would love a special Poké Ball Pizza, prepared just for this day. And, to keep them busy on their own, there will be free face painting available with Pokémon-styled patterns.

Adults can treat themselves with a special alcoholic Electroshock Lemonade Punch. A DJ will be playing theme music, reminding you of your happy, careless days of youth.
