Last Friday House of Knowledge (HOK) opened their doors to parents and kids to celebrate their ninth annual St. Martin’s Lantern Walk. My husband, daughter (3 years old) and I arrived to the wonderful smell of mulled wine and German sausage roasting on the grill; this gave us a proper European winter feeling.

One of the students made a lantern for our daughter so she could “be in the parade” as my daughter put it. The kids had some outside play on the wonderful playground before we were off for a walk and singing with our lanterns. HOK provided a song book with several St. Martin’s songs but “Twinkle Twinkle” was by far the most popular song in English, German, and Chinese. After we came back from our walk, we sampled the mulled wine, hot chocolate, and homemade cookies.

There were several activities do for the kids including outdoor glow in the dark activities, and indoor arts and crafts. Most importantly there were mothers and teachers face painting, and this is always very popular with our daughter and lots of other kids. The passion and hard work of the face painters was received with lots of joy by our daughter, and she was heartbroken when we had to wash off the beautiful, painted butterfly later.

We sampled the German sausage and some of the warming goulash then picked up our traditional St.Martin’s bread man which didn’t make it home but was devoured on the bus. We will definitely make this part of our family tradition here in Beijing, it gave us a taste of home, and we are looking forward to the tenth annual St. Martin’s walk next year.

The night was for a good cause helping Wu Ya Chao, a nine year boy with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. He is currently in Beijing Children’s Hospital and needs 11 chemotherapy treatments to recover, so every cent that is raised will be for a good cause.

We’ve written about Pat Christie’s creations before. This lady knows how to turn mundane materials into works of art. The things she churns out from her home-based workshop always make it to Shunyi and city charity bazaars. Her constant hits include bags made from Shanghai silk, all-purpose bags with the clever tagline “My Dongxi” (literally, My Things, but also a play on the Chinese phrase mai dongxi, which means to go shopping), and colorful dimsum steamer organizers.

Another project close to her heart is what she calls t-shirt quilts. Pat takes twenty t-shirts and uses the parts with logos or designs to make the top surface of a twin-size quilt. The backing is then chosen from a variety of fabrics that Pat has accumulated over the years, specifically for her crafting projects.

What began as a project to help preserve some Beijing memories for her son before he went off to college has now grown into one of Pat’s favorite pastimes in Beijing. To date she has made quilts with the same purpose, as a reminder of personal highs for expats in Beijing, as well as producing quilts commissioned for charity fundraising events. All proceeds of personal commissions go to Roundabout.

Working in close association with Roundabout, Pat receives dozens of t-shirts with Beijing international school logos. Once she has the twenty coordinating ones that she needs to complete one quilt, she then sets about preparing all her materials. The t-shirts are cut into squares or rectangles depending on her design, they are laid out, and the matching border and backing fabrics are chosen. She frequents Muxianyu fabric market when she needs to find something new. She then begins by hand sewing the t-shirt squares onto the borders then finishes off with machine-stitching everything into place.

Not one to waste any craft material, Pat then sets aside the remaining portions of the t-shirts and transforms them into long strips of fabric that she then sews or weaves into cloth rags. These rags are a particular hit at the factory her husband manages. Pat likes knowing that her projects generate minimal waste and she encourages even her household staff to think of ways to use up scraps of fabric from her projects.

Once asked if she would be willing to make a quilt to be raffled off at a fundraising event, Pat set off to work immediately. She used “Beijing moments” t-shirts, the likes of which proclaim “I climbed the Great Wall” or featured popular tourist destination icons. She completed the project in a week and then gave the quilt back to the organizers. Raffle tickets for the quilt alone were snapped up in no time, and raised RMB 4,700 for the beneficiary.

To set an appointment with Pat for your personal quilt, call 134 0101 5228. Prices start at RMB 900, with all proceeds going to charity.

In her free time, she can be found exploring the city and driving along the mountain roads of Huairou, Miyun and Pinggu.

ROUNDABOUT CLEARANCE SALE

Starting on Sunday, October 9 at 9.30am, Roundabout Charity’s store will be full of great bargains. Look out for: paintings, furniture, toys, games, baby equipment, electronics, photo frames, crafts, kitchenware, sports gear, new clothing, shoes (in large sizes too), CDs, candles, bags, and more!

WHY IS THIS SALE HAPPENING?

Once again, Roundabout is on the move. This time the whole village is coming down. Estimated time for demolition is the end of October. Roundabout has been looking for an affordable, permanent home for about two years now. Roundabout is at a loss and cannot bear the thought of closing down completely.

The fantastic folks at River Garden in Shunyi have offered free use of a piece of land in a great location, but Roundabout would still need portable type buildings to put on that land.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

Let your friends know about the clearance sale! This week, they have spent the holiday packing things to go out to charities and putting out items "ready to sell" in the store. Their shelves are stocked, with lots more ready to repack those shelves, so if you can’t make it on Sunday then do come another day!

They will keep sending out trucks of supplies to those in need, so please keep donations coming in.

Check out Roundabout’s book fair at British School of Beijing. Scroll down below.

Please let Roundabout know if you can help in anyway – be it a suggestion on a location, or an offer from your company to sponsor rent of a higher priced location.

LOCATION REQUIREMENTS

Must be easy for people to get to to drop off their donations and to shop. Their trained workforce (volunteers and staff) are almost all from the Shunyi area.

Must be accessible to local Chinese people as not only do they account for a large percentage of our sales, but the long-term goal of Roundabout is to eventually have Chinese people running this type of charity for their fellow countrymen. This means a guarded compound would not be suitable for a new store location.

BOOK FAIR UPDATE

Read our previous blog post on the fair here.

The Roundabout Charity Book Fair at the British School of Beijing in Shunyi has currently raised just over RMB 135,000. RMB 120,000 will be given to New Hope Foster Care Home for hospital costs for little baby Harith, who is being treated at Beijing United Family Hospital. They would also like to be able to pay for a cataract operation for four-month-old Zheng Silin (from The Blue Sky Healing Home).

Roundabout is still hoping to reach a goal of raising RMB 150,000. The book fair will still be on until WEDNESDAY of next week (October 19). A new selection of kid’s books was put out two days ago. Also, new adult books are put out on a regular basis.

Pop by the book fair at British School of Beijing (Shunyi campus) on Monday or Tuesday from 9.30am to 3.30pm. Pick up some last minute book bargains and help Roundabout reach their RMB 150,000 target!

SING ON A CHRISTMAS CHARITY CD

Calling all budding singers! If you would like to audition for the chance to sing (in a group, or perhaps solo) on a Christmas Charity CD, now is your big chance. Claire’s Music Studio and Roundabout have joined forces to make a charity CD that will be sold in order to raise money to purchase coal for orphanages who are in extreme need. Sadly, every year many children in orphanages lose fingers and toes due to frostbite because their orphanage has no money to purchase coal for heating.

Please look at the attached flyer (above) for full details of how you can be a part of this great project.

*HURRY though. Apply by WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 12* (extended from the date shown on the flyer). Email thecharitystore@gmail.com.

ANY AGE is welcome – so grab your family and friends and have some fun!
