The summer break is in full swing, however before you know it the new school year will be upon us and the rush to stock up on school supplies will be the call of the day. For many families, pressing the reset button for another year of ensuring that the kids have what they need to start their new academic term at school can be full of angst.

When schools open up their gates once more, there are a lot of expenses to expect. I am nowhere near that stage with my little one but have friends who, no matter how well they try and prepare for the new school year, still sometimes get overwhelmed with the impending rush to fill school bags with fresh stationery supplies. However with a little creativity and savviness, not to mention common sense, we parents will be able to save on these costs.

Ways to save on school supplies

Make an inventory and reuse non-consumable school supplies

Salvage whatever you can from your kid’s school bags, study table drawers and shelves to find what is still usable. You will be impressed and surprised by how much you can save on unused notebooks, pencils, pens, and other ad hoc stationery. Encourage your children to re-use non-consumable items like staplers, ruler, sharpeners, calculators, and pencil cases, to name but a few.

Buy from the wholesalers

This you can easily do via online platforms such as Taobao. You can find just about anything on the Taobao website, where wholesalers offer a number of bulk items for purchase, from cereal to canned goods, and what we parents need for the kids and their next term at school. If you really want to score low on school supply prices, go directly to wholesalers for those extra items for the following year. You may have to purchase in bulk but you can set aside surplus items for the following year, or better yet, make your bulk purchase with other parents, save on cash and split supplies between the kids. You will be able to save a ton!

Do not follow the crowd

If I try and revisit some basic economics, the law of supply and demand comes to mind. Usually when there is a high demand for school items because it’s the beginning of the academic year, prices tend to hike. Given this, you can be purposeful and creative in the timing of buying school gear as well as school supplies. Try and purchase school shoes, socks, and other clothing items off-season. Avoid making these kinds of purchases during the school opening because you may hit the crowds and the prices will hit your pockets. Check out clearance and inventory sales during term time in preparation for the following year.

Go for quality

It’s simple but effective. You may find a steal when it comes to some items, but usually you get what you pay for and when making a purchase that seemingly saves you on cash, if the quality is not up to par, you will be making another purchase too soon after your initial buy and spending double if not triple on school supplies and clothing you have to repeatedly replace. Pay that little bit extra for a quality purchase that will save you money in the long run.

Wishing you and the family well! Don’t leave your school supply shop to the last minute, plan ahead and help your kids start their new term at school the way they mean to go on.

Nothing says childhood more than an after school evening spent pumping pedals through the neighborhood. The challenge for parents in Beijing is determining which kid bicycle is of best quality and most reasonable price on the Chinese market, full of unfamiliar brands at sporting stores.

The Beijing International Children’s Bicycle & Buggy Exhibition plans to solve this problem with a contest of the Most Beautiful Children’s Bicycle Selection between the brands and models recommend by the public.

The Expo will be held on July 30 through August 1 at the China National Convention Center, as part of the Beijing International Bicycle and Spare Parts Exhibition 2016, which you can read about more here on our sister publication’s site, the Beijinger.

When shopping at the expo, beijingkids encourages parents to consider these questions:

What are the height and weight suggestions set out by the brand/manufacturer of the bike?

Are bike safety measures all included or available for purchase (double breaks, bells, reflectors on the back, front, in the pedals, and on the basket)?

Is any sort of warranty provided with the brand?

How easily can replacement parts be found in Beijing (handle pads, tire tubes, bike saddle, basket, wires)?

Consider the style of the tire. If your child will mostly be riding around on pathways and in courtyards of a neighborhood, a thinner and less grooved tire is best, not the wide and heavily inlaid mountain-like tire.

Bicycle nominations are held between June 1 and July 5, and bicycle brands can also submit their product for consideration. Brands can find out minimum requirements here while parents can recommend bikes through the Exhibition’s official WeChat account, which can be found here.

Products that do not receive 50 “likes” from voters will not be able to participate.

Contest winners will be determined based on customer love, user friendliness, cost, beauty, and social responsibility.

Beijing International Children’s Bicycle and Buggy Exhibition, July 30 – August 1
All ages. Free. On July 30 and 31, Saturday and Sunday, the exhibition is open between 9.30am and 4.30pm, while on Monday August 1, the doors will be open from 9.30am to 2pm. China National Convention Center (Exhibition Website).

Radiance had its “Moving Sale” and final vendor bazaar this weekend. The moving sale part has been going on for over a year now, but with the festivities, crowds and a moving date in sight (end of the month), people feel compelled to look around and consider bigger purchases.

My husband was one of those people. He has a compulsion for buying rugs. I think part of it has to do with the good rugs being less expensive here than in the states, and part has to do with the cold, hardwood floors in every house. He has purchased rugs that have not been unrolled yet because we really have no place for them. And today he purchased an extra-large size, with the intent of putting it underneath our main dining table off the kitchen.

I question the wisdom of this idea, because we have two kids who still leave plenty of their meal remnants behind (on the table, on the floor…). Chairs sometimes get pushed in, sometimes not. No, our children are not back in the cave times unable to use utensils or display proper table manners, but they are kids. Even witnessing the eating behaviors of their friends makes me realize that mine are pretty normal.

But a sale is a sale is a sale, and the one this weekend caught my husband’s attention. So we ended up with a beautiful wool rug from Afghanistan, with lovely warm colors and a subtle design to go with the furniture and other décor in that particular room. I’m not so sure that it’ll go with the food that will ultimately end up all over it, but we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it. After all, life is too short not to enjoy a beautiful rug right now, even if it may not remain as pristine as it is today.

Radiance is continuing its moving sale until the end of the month. Furniture and décor is 40-60% off; rugs are 60-70% off. The store is located on Tianbei Lu, next to Mrs. Shanen’s. Call 8049 6400 for directions.

ROUNDABOUT CLEARANCE SALE

Starting on Sunday, October 9 at 9.30am, Roundabout Charity’s store will be full of great bargains. Look out for: paintings, furniture, toys, games, baby equipment, electronics, photo frames, crafts, kitchenware, sports gear, new clothing, shoes (in large sizes too), CDs, candles, bags, and more!

WHY IS THIS SALE HAPPENING?

Once again, Roundabout is on the move. This time the whole village is coming down. Estimated time for demolition is the end of October. Roundabout has been looking for an affordable, permanent home for about two years now. Roundabout is at a loss and cannot bear the thought of closing down completely.

The fantastic folks at River Garden in Shunyi have offered free use of a piece of land in a great location, but Roundabout would still need portable type buildings to put on that land.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

Let your friends know about the clearance sale! This week, they have spent the holiday packing things to go out to charities and putting out items "ready to sell" in the store. Their shelves are stocked, with lots more ready to repack those shelves, so if you can’t make it on Sunday then do come another day!

They will keep sending out trucks of supplies to those in need, so please keep donations coming in.

Check out Roundabout’s book fair at British School of Beijing. Scroll down below.

Please let Roundabout know if you can help in anyway – be it a suggestion on a location, or an offer from your company to sponsor rent of a higher priced location.

LOCATION REQUIREMENTS

Must be easy for people to get to to drop off their donations and to shop. Their trained workforce (volunteers and staff) are almost all from the Shunyi area.

Must be accessible to local Chinese people as not only do they account for a large percentage of our sales, but the long-term goal of Roundabout is to eventually have Chinese people running this type of charity for their fellow countrymen. This means a guarded compound would not be suitable for a new store location.

BOOK FAIR UPDATE

Read our previous blog post on the fair here.

The Roundabout Charity Book Fair at the British School of Beijing in Shunyi has currently raised just over RMB 135,000. RMB 120,000 will be given to New Hope Foster Care Home for hospital costs for little baby Harith, who is being treated at Beijing United Family Hospital. They would also like to be able to pay for a cataract operation for four-month-old Zheng Silin (from The Blue Sky Healing Home).

Roundabout is still hoping to reach a goal of raising RMB 150,000. The book fair will still be on until WEDNESDAY of next week (October 19). A new selection of kid’s books was put out two days ago. Also, new adult books are put out on a regular basis.

Pop by the book fair at British School of Beijing (Shunyi campus) on Monday or Tuesday from 9.30am to 3.30pm. Pick up some last minute book bargains and help Roundabout reach their RMB 150,000 target!

SING ON A CHRISTMAS CHARITY CD

Calling all budding singers! If you would like to audition for the chance to sing (in a group, or perhaps solo) on a Christmas Charity CD, now is your big chance. Claire’s Music Studio and Roundabout have joined forces to make a charity CD that will be sold in order to raise money to purchase coal for orphanages who are in extreme need. Sadly, every year many children in orphanages lose fingers and toes due to frostbite because their orphanage has no money to purchase coal for heating.

Please look at the attached flyer (above) for full details of how you can be a part of this great project.

*HURRY though. Apply by WEDNESDAY OCTOBER 12* (extended from the date shown on the flyer). Email thecharitystore@gmail.com.

ANY AGE is welcome – so grab your family and friends and have some fun!
