Ahhh, love is in the air. Oh wait, it’s just the smell of nail polish.

Getting your nails done can be an expensive pleasure, and getting a specific design can cost even more. But how can you say no to such beauty on your hands? There is a saying that nails are the cherry on top for any look, and we cannot agree more.

I walked into Laurent Falcon and the first thing that Max said was “Why do you make these challenges for me?” Let me rewind a few years. The first time I met Max was when he used to work at Blow+Bar and I called him up at night after I had botched a coloring job on the advice of a friend who told me any salon in Beijing can do balayage coloring if you can speak Chinese.

This time, thinking that I could trust the guy who has been giving me the exact haircut I wanted for the past three years, I asked him to chop off my long locks and give me this look:

Five(ish) hours later I left with an incorrectly done bleach job that damaged my hair way more than it needed to and disappointment in my heart. But at least the cut was cute…

So, once again, I called up Max for a hair emergency.

See, after multiple trials and errors when it comes to hair salons in Beijing, I’ve come to this conclusion: You can try a cheap place for a cut provided that you can communicate what you want clearly – either verbally or with photo examples. But when it comes to coloring, you’ve got to go to someone experienced.

I know that for many a makeover at Laurent Falcon is definitely a splurge. Their prices are far from being cheap. But when it comes to coloring … especially when it involves stripping color off, leave it to the professionals with actual experience instead of ending up as a guinea pig for a young hairdresser with the best intentions but no know-how.

It might be more expensive than your local hair salon, but at least you’ll walk out with exactly what you wanted.

For the best color:

From my multiple unfortunate personal experiences, while coloring might seem like an easy thing that anyone with some training can do, pulling it off properly is not. If you’re looking for the balayage look, Laurent Falcon is the place to go.

Best deal for wash and blow:

3AM has multiple locations in Beijing. When you purchase a RMB 2,000 membership card one of the perks is that you get free wash and blows as often as you like!

Travel Tip: 798 is a tourist attraction, so its surrounding areas will likely be busy. Instead, take Subway Line 14 to Jiangtai Station, exit A and cross the street. It’s a couple of minutes walk to 798, and a few more minutes once you’re in to find 751.

Welcome to the 5th edition our weekly Shunyi Happenings newsletter, where our Shunyi Correspondent Charlotte Moreau brings you all the goings-on from beyond the 5th Ring. Have a Shunyi tip for Charlotte? Click here to send her the details.

*It’s here, it’s running, it’s GREAT! Now those of us in Shunyi can get to the city without worrying about no-drive days, parking nightmares or the problem of getting a taxi to take us back home. Learn about Line 15 by reading my first-hand account (with family in tow) here

*The winter holiday is a great time to venture out of Shunyi, actually, since the local schools are still in session and many families travel for the international school breaks. Spring break is another time to consider a day trip to the city, be it to the Olympic Village (swimming in the Cube or sledding in the Bird’s Nest), Fundazzle or elsewhere. Our family has spent several days enjoying city activities that we might not otherwise do.

*Pinnacle Plaza has new small grocery to go to. MoMo’s Grocery fills the space where Gary Lewis’ Salon used to be. Here you’ll find – and smell – fish for sale, among other meats and produce. Prices aren’t listed on everything, but they appear to be a bit higher than wise expats can get elsewhere. However, I’m told that the owner there is easy to bargain with if you choose to haggle. With Jenny Lou’s, Lohao and BHG all nearby, it’ll be interesting to see if this little food mart will succeed.

*Sidecars and hamburgers, anyone? Tony Hsu is well known in the Pinnacle Plaza area for his sidecar and motorcycle business. But this Taiwanese businessman who grew up in the states also knows a thing or two about restaurants. Welcome to Tony Hamburger, featuring Western and Chinese dishes daily from 11am to 9pm, right across the street from Baskin Robbins. I haven’t yet tried the restaurant, so if anyone has a review to share, please do.

*Be careful!! With our Western holidays and Chinese New Year just around the corner, you may hear of petty theft rampant in public places. I was nearly pick-pocketed myself on a Yashow market escalator not long ago. It felt violating and scary. Out in Shunyi, expats can expect to heed the same kind of safety warnings. Don’t be careless with your belongings, don’t flash cash and valuables, and be smart.

*We don’t often travel out to the airport for reasons other than, well, traveling. But there’s a lot to offer out there in terms of restaurant options, and it’s simply not far away to go. A recent hit is the restaurant Fuel at the Langham Hotel near Terminal 3. Very modern in design, this large restaurant features ribs and pizza, and monthly menu specials plus more. Evening entertainment includes live bands, DJs, karaoke, and sports television broadcasts.

* This just in, from alert reader Caroline Gong: “I was shopping at the Vanguard supermarket in Houshayu and was surprised to find that a new drive-through KFC had opened right across the street. It opened on December 31 and was quite crowded when I stopped in, so business is good. Houshayu is really developing pretty quickly!”

*People are trickling back to the Shunyi area after many were on holiday out of town. While it’s been quiet and relaxing here the past couple of weeks, families are getting over jet lag and preparing for school to start up again next week. With that, expect for news in the Shunyi area to pick up. Happy New Year, everyone!

A common inquiry in the Shunyi area, primarily among women, is where – nearby – to go for a good haircut or color. If you don’t want to venture to the city, options can be limited and you roll the dice with your tresses. Too often you hear the horror stories of color-gone-bad, or hatchet jobs sold as a trendy new style. A good hairdresser is like a life-long friend. When you have one, hold on for dear life. So, where to go?

Dennis and Sam, co-owners of West Hair Salon, are opening a brand new location in Euro Plaza (they are currently at the Crowne Plaza Hotel). Top Shanghai stylists with more than 11 years of experience, they specialize in Western and Asian hair styles. Both are experts in blond highlights and hair coloring, as is King, another stylist that works closely with them. The salon uses Paul Mitchell hair care and color products for all services.

To celebrate their new salon, they’re throwing an opening party on Wednesday, December 1 at their 5th floor Euro Plaza location from 10am-7pm. Guests will meet the stylists while enjoying finger food, wine tasting and music, and everyone will also receive a 50 percent off coupon for a first hair service visit. School teachers, listen up! You will always receive 20 percent off all regular prices for hair services.

No more chasing the perfect haircut and color! Come see for yourself if this might be the last salon you’ll have to check out.
