Having a child can be the most wonderful time in a parent’s life. The joy starts overflowing even before the little goober arrives, with parents imagining what their child’s first words will be, who the child will take after, and sharing the traditions, songs and childhood games passed on to them by their parents, when they were children.

Hanna Ryder experienced that joy, albeit by proxy, as a loving auntie to her sister’s 6-month old bundle of joy. At her local library in Glasgow, where she lived at the time, Ryder discovered kiddie classes being offered for free. This is hardly an astonishing thing, as such services are offered in public libraries all across the UK.

However, when Ryder herself was expecting a child, she would soon realize these simple joys she had come to rely on for her niece back home would not be available to her. This is because she and her husband had since moved to Beijing. And without family and friends from back home, Ryder was hard-pressed to find a network in which her child could meet and interact with other children, and where she herself could meet and interact with other mommies to be.

But that is far from the reality for mothers and babies in Beijing, as Ryder would later discover. “I expected something like that to be in Beijing, but it wasn’t. I looked for things like Jamboree, but nothing was working,” explains Ryder. Thankfully, she did get connected to a local group called ‘Bumps to Babes’, geared towards moms-to-be, which organized babies into groups according to the Zodiac year in which they were born.

Even though this provided an important avenue for interaction and stimulation for her child, she noticed one flaw in the system. “One of the challenges with Bumps-to-Babes and such other networks, is they are very much just for the moms. There are a few dads in there, but they also don’t include Ayis or grandparents,” elaborates Ryder. As a working woman, it was important for Ryder to know in the event of her absence, her Ayi would be able to equally participate in the activities organized for the children.

So Safari Time came to be, first hosted at the now closed Bookworm. The name Safari – Swahili for journey – is not only meant to represent the various nationalities who usually attend sessions organized by Ryder, but rather personally, it is named after Ryder’s own son, Safari. Safari Time was created with an aim of fully exploring the cosmopolitan nature of Beijing, and the richness of diverse cultures which aren’t fully tapped as resources in the education and entertainment of children.

For parents looking for an engaging way to stimulate their toddlers, Chinese parents looking to offer their children a multilingual start to life, and dads looking to spend some quality time on a Saturday morning with their kids, Safari Time offers it all. And for parents who might be struggling to learn Chinese, it might be an awesome way to not only pick up a few key Chinese phrases, but a few more in Japanese, Swahili, French and whatever other nursery rhyme Safari Time families might share.

Sing along with Hannah Ryder and her adorable son, Safari, here.

Beijing families have been stunned by the news that beloved bookstore The Bookworm is to close.

In a statement issued today, the owners said they had “fallen prey to the ongoing cleanup of ‘illegal structures’,” and had not been able to negotiate an extension of their lease. They expect the store to close by Monday November 11. Anyone who wants to support them is encouraged to go and buy books before then, which they promise will be “heavily discounted”.

The closure is bad news for international parents, and not only because The Bookworm was a rare outlet for English-language reading material for kids. It was also a venue for community activities.

We spoke to Hannah Ryder, who runs the popular weekly Safari Time Songs there.

“Even before I arrived in Beijing five years ago,” she told us, “the Bookworm was on my radar. It is not just a bookshop or cafe, it’s an institution! It has diversity at its heart – attracting curious international and Chinese clientele in equal measure. That’s why when I was starting Safari Time it was a no-brainer to ask the Bookworm if they would host it, and to my delight they agreed. Over the three years we have hosted classes there, with their support, Safari Time has grown, babies have grown, families left and new families joined. It is therefore incredibly sad to hear this news, and I just hope a way can be found to maintain the Bookworm, even if in another venue in Sanlitun. If anything, it needs more investment, not less!”

The Bookworm first opened in 2002, as a small lending library offering a few drinks. It moved to its present location in 2005, and now has branches in Chengdu and Suzhou. It’s also home to an international literary festival which has featured celebrated children’s writers such as Ian Whybrow and Jane Godwin.

The owners say they hope to reopen soon at a new venue, but until then there will be a significant hole in Beijing’s cultural life.

There is no easy way to say 捏面 (nie mian) in English! It means ‘pinch flour’ but in fact, this folk-craft, which dates back to the Han Dynasty, involves a lot more than just pinching. The ‘clay’, actually dough, was traditionally made of glutinous rice and colorings made from different foods. The final product, beautiful though it was, could be eaten. Today, certain additives such as honey and paraffin might be added to improve the longevity of the final product, and they definitely can’t be eaten! You can learn to make a Sun Wu Kong (Monkey King) figurine and more using traditional techniques at this workshop at Culture Yard on April 21. All ages. RMB 288 (adults), RMB 258 (kids under 16). The price includes an English-language presentation on the history and culture of rice clay figurine making and the Monkey King; a two-hour workshop with an expert teacher, snacks, and drinks. 2-5pm. See more of our coverage here.

The #TrashTag Challenge

Who knew your trash can go viral? In this month’s The Green Pages, my colleague Rebecca Archer talked about the #trashtag challenge, which prompts western social media users to share photos of their clean-ups just like below:

One of the Instagram photos hashtagged #trashtag shows the challenge: take a photo after you clean up a place full of rubbish. This photo is shot in Nepal according to the uploader, Kelllvvviiinnn.

This hashtag is also gaining traction on Weibo with its Chinese version #捡垃圾挑战# (jiǎn lājī tiǎozhàn, “garbage challenge”). As we speak, this Chinese #trashtag has already gotten over 11,000 conversations and 31 million reads since March.

Even before the #trashtag and its Weibo version came to form, an equally important challenge has already done the rounds on the social platform, helping Chinese netizens live a zero waste lifestyle: the #零废弃挑战# (líng fèiqì tiǎozhàn, “zero waste challenge”).

We know that some fads on social media can fade away into oblivion just as fast they became viral, but the #trashtag challenge and its Chinese sister forms are here to stay, with several communities and organizations joining the call to post before-and-after photos of cleaning up rubbish on streets.

Initiatives like this are just one of many ways we can help care for Mother Nature. But what would be even better would be if everyone produced less trash in the first place! Check out our March 2019 Sustainability issue for more ideas on how you can cut down on plastic and other rubbish.

The digital hemisphere has been rampant with all things green and sustainability-focused, and now it’s time to honor Earth Day and align that stream of consciousness of yours with everything zero waste and green. The emerging concept of green consumption is of a practice that is strongly influenced by consumer values, norms, and habits and is closely related to the wonderful notion of sustainable development.

How can we better safeguard the environment through our consumer behaviors? How can we impact climate change, our ever-polluted seas and oceans, and skies in a positive way? It all starts with small but significant individual and collective habits. Start ‘Green Buying’ and go and get some inspiration at this year’s Eco Spring Fair.

Earth Day is a global event each year. As global ecological awareness grows, individual agency to help support environmental protection has also developed throughout the world – in towns and cities, and local hubs. Earth Day, depending on where you are in the world, is a day of political and civic participation. Whether its planting trees, cleaning up your local area, making a pledge to take sustainability measures in your home and communities, every act has great purpose and no matter how minute, culminates with the endeavors of others to produce real change.

The Bookworm has invited 35 vendors from across the city and from the local communities of fine artists, handicraft makers, fashion designers, organic food vendors, charity groups, and more to stop by and show us how one can produce and consume the green way. Support Earth Day, while celebrating the wonderful things our community has to offer and positively contribute to the campaign for further ecological awareness in Beijing.
