Philippine food is perhaps one of the underrepresented Asian cuisines in Beijing. Currently, there’s no Filipino restaurant in the city, but you’ll see many professional chefs, bartenders, and small food entrepreneurs thriving in various food spaces here.
Just recently, Kusina ni Kabayan, a Filipino WeChat group, brought a taste of Philippine cuisine to the Hot & Spicy Festival in April, with sizzling dishes like sisig (pork seasoned with lime and chili peppers) and Bicol Express (pork stew made from chili, coconut milk, and shrimp paste).
The group are now staging another event that showcases food from the Philippines, in the form of Pamilyang Pinoy (Filipino Family) Autumn Fair, taking place on September 16 (Sunday) at Plan B in Shuangjing. The event organizers have just announced the list of Filipino vendors offering the finest meals and delicacies (tap the hyperlinks to see photos):
– Commercial bread (like pan de sal and ensaimada)
– Traditional meals (igado, adobo)
– Special cuisine (pork dinuguan, lechon belly, sizzling pork sisig)
– Philippine food fusion (dynamic spring rolls, barbecue)
– Sweets and delicacies (biko, maja blanca, puto)
– Drinks (samalamig)
– Snacks (chicharon)
– Grocery products from the Philippines
The Migrant Children’s Foundation and Greenwave will also sell their products at the fair, while OASIS International Hospital will take care of the first aid booth.
Besides the food extravaganza, the fair also introduces some of the most fun traditional Filipino games. like tirador, hilaang lubid, a Philippine version of a sack race, and more Pinoy-style party icebreakers.
The Pamilyang Pinoy Fair aims to raise funds for Postcards from Disasters (PFD), a group which has documented the lives and struggles of the survivors of Super Typhoon Haiyan in Tacloban City since 2016. The PFD project aims to influence local policies in the hopes of preventing a situation like Haiyan from happening again. Kusina ni Kabayan will also display some of the photographs taken by young survivors at a special viewing area during the fair.
