We loaded this issue up with several new resources and included old-time favorites.

As expected, we examined different curricula in the city, with a new focus on Bilingual curriculum and International Primary Curriculum. We also laid out for you some statistics comparing schools city-wide, including questions we highly suggest you ask your potential schools at the Beijing International School Expo.

We also sought expert advice from Barbara Chen about how Third Culture Kids (TCK) can set their college application apart from the rest. We also added more insights into the ever-long debate of homework.

Baozza, the ingenious pizza and baozi combination, has soft opened in the new basement-level food court of Sanlitun Soho (美食街). We ran over as quickly as humanly possible, of course, and got some of every flavor.

The concept behind the menu is really simple: buy two of any item on their menu (baozi, soups, and salads) for RMB 20, four for RMB 35, eight for RMB 65, and 12 for RMB 100.

Out of the four Baozza flavors our favorites were the margherita (pictured above), filled with tomato sauce, stringy cheese,a nd a healthy dose of herbs added directly to the dough, and the Hawaiian jalapeño, a spicy take on the traditional ham and pineapple Hawaiian pizza combo. All flavors come with a pot of vinegar Sriracha or a marinara sauce, giving you the option to complement your choice with a healthy kick.

Our only feedback is that we wouldn’t mind a little more stuffing in these steamed buns (use menu pics as a guide). In fact, all that’s necessary is more cheese, because you can never have enough cheese, especially in China.

(Read the Baozza creator’s interview here: Baozza Co-Founder Talks Serving Up Steamed and Filling Treats)

The Baozza window is open for takeaway Monday-Friday between 11.30am and 3pm, for now. Times will be subject to change once the team tweak the formula to see what works best for them.

As the school year starts up and buckles down, we want to encourage students and teachers with a heart-warming story about the many who come and go from Beijing.

Meredith Chen started reception at the International Montessori School of Beijing (MSB) and left for the United States for grade 3. She came back for grade 5 at the International School of Beijing (ISB) and eventually moved on to study Elementary Education at Emmanuel College in Boston.

“I wanted to go into education remembering those teachers who were more mentors than just teachers.”

Her own education journey was not without its troubles, as she recalls herself as “not a good student” but the teachers she encountered along the way who made her feel like there was no struggle made the journey enjoyable and memorable.

Elaine Kinlough teaches Merrideth Chen’s reception class. Chen is the student closest to the white table with the bright green scrunchie in her hair.

Chen came back to MSB for an internship, gladly accepting a position with her first year reception teacher, Elaine Kinlough, who also taught Chen in her first year of teaching.

Similarly to Chen, Kinlough says, “I first came to Beijing in 1997. I have left twice; however, I keep coming back. I’ve noticed many dramatic changes in this city over the past 20 years.”

When asked about Chen coming back to intern at MSB, Elaine responded, “I was extremely excited for [Chen] to come back to MSB and work in the classroom with me. I wanted to see if she was still the bubbly, outgoing student that I remembered. Almost 20 years later, she retains so much of the child I knew all those years ago. She has brought infectious enthusiasm and joy to her work with us, and it’s been a huge pleasure to see her return.”

Kinlough mentioned that with social media, it’s far easier for her to stay in touch with former students, though MSB graduates seem to find their way back.

“It’s wonderful when students come back to work at the school. It’s like our lives have come full circle. It’s also exciting and inspiring for the students in my class to know that [Chen] is a previous student of mine. It links them to the 26-year history of the school in a concrete way,” Kinlough said.

In a moment of sentimentalism, we wondered how Kinlough felt about Chen leaving again.

“[Chen] and other MSB students never leave. They always come back to visit us. Like me, they can’t stay away!”

Regardless of which side you’re on, we can all agree this is not the election to sleep in and let your vote slip away with the minutes on your alarm clock. Registering from abroad is easy and there’s still time for you to do so in every state. Head over to AmCham, where this post originally appeared, for each state’s deadlines.

US President Obama recently demonstrated on Buzzfeed just how easy it is to vote: easier than making a friendship bracelet, easier than untangling a pair of headphones and definitely easier than naming all the dead characters from Game of Thrones.

Voting abroad, too, has become easier than ever. (See our infographic, below.) All US citizens can now receive ballots electronically, and many states do the whole process by email. Depending on the state in which you are eligible to vote, you may get your ballot by email, fax or through a website. How you send it back also depends on which state, territory or other citizenship you may have. Here’s an outline of the process and a state-by-state guide (plus territories and citizens who have never resided in the US). There’s no reason not to flex your right this November.

Step one: Register and request absentee

To begin, go to FVAP.gov to complete and submit your new Federal Post Card Application (FPCA) electronically, which acts as both a registration and absentee ballot request form. You can also fill out the PDF online or pick up a hard copy version from your nearest consulate, US Embassy or from an overseas US citizen civic or political group.

If you request an electronic delivery and include your email address or fax number, you’ll receive your blank ballot 45 days before the general election. Most states now have voter registration verification websites, and many offer a way of tracking the status of your registration and ballot.

Step two: Returning your ballot

In order to return your filled-in ballot, either return your ballot online, put your ballot in the mail with appropriate international postage, or drop off your ballot at your closest US Embassy or consulate, though it must be addressed to your local election officials and have sufficient postage or be in a postage-paid envelope (a postage-paid envelope is available on the FVAP web site). If you are short on time or your local mail is unreliable, you can use professional courier services such as FedEx, DHL or UPS.

If you have not received your requested state absentee ballot in a timely manner, you can fill out the Federal Write-In Absentee Ballot (FWAB), fill out the PDF form and send it directly to your election office, or pick up a hard copy version from your nearest US Embassy or consulate. The PDF package even includes a pre-addressed and postage paid label! But don’t forget a security envelope.

Click on over to AmCham for a complete state-by-state guide to voting in the coming election.
